It is always a good idea to have skills to start some enterprise. In today’s world, you will be sidelined if you do not have good communication skills.
These thoughts inspired single mother Sarnjit Kaur to enrol for a sew and earn project.
“I don’t mind trying…nothing to lose. The programme is all paid for. I will get to know some people,” Sarnjit tells Asia Samachar.
She is one of the women who have signed up for the Projek Jahit & Berdikari (Sew & Earn) organised by the Sikh Women’s Awareness Network (SWAN).
The project is funded by the Socio-Economic Development of the Indian Community (SEDIC), a special unit formed under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to handle the special funding for Indian NGOs.

The programme is open to women who have ‘the time, commitment and interest’ to become entrepreneur.
Partcipants will undergo a year-long free training during which there will be given allowance, subsidised transport and food.
“This is a good programme for ladies who want to open up their own business,” SWAN president Satwant Kaur tells Asia Samachar.
Sarnjit, who has a full time job, is among the 50 who have signed up for the SWAN briefing for the programme.
“We will explain to them in detail how the programme works,” said Satwant.
It will be held in simultaneously in four places: Klang Valley. Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Sungai Petani.
“Those interested to supplement their income are invited to register. We hope that these participants will, eventually, become successful entrepreneurs,” she said.
SWAN hopes to get more participants from outside of Klang Valley.
Those interested can call Satwant Kaur (016.3615814), Rajinder Kaur (012.6594202) or Daljeet Kaur (012.2253669).

According our EVER LAST “GURU SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI” “GURU IS WORDS, WORDS IS GURU” explain us ” KIRAT KARO WAND SHAKO”, “DO WORK FOR EARN AND SHARE 10% WITH FREE KITCHEN as our GURU’s teach us. and or Mr/Mrs satwant’s phrase “Sew and Earn” mean the similar meaning.
Thanks for the info. We , the commttee, are fully aware of the meaning of the word ‘Berdikari. The English version is not meant to be a translation of the BM version, but an extension. It spells out the objective of the project. It is not meant for those who intend to participate for the sole purpose of occupying their free time or as a hobby. It is for those who wish to generate income and become entrepreneurs. Thus, the phrases “Jahit dan Berdikari” and “Sew and Earn”
If I may correct berdikari meaning in Indonesian is self reliance or short form of ‘berdiri Di kaki sendiri’
Kind regards
