MGC: Dasam Granth video clips not a ‘directive’

Immediate response from Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) on the purported 'directive' on Dasam Granth via video clips featuring “Jathedar” Patna Sahib

Letter To Editor 2Dear Editor,

The Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) has taken note of the 2 video clips featuring “Jathedar” Patna Sahib including his opinion that the entire Dasam Granth is Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Bani (Gurbani).

The matter of the 2 video clips would soon be considered and a statement issued after that.

When the news first broke out about 3-4 days ago, the had MGC immediately got in touch with Sikh leaders in India to verify its authenticity. We were informed that until yesterday (2/8/2016) evening, the matter appeared not to have been reported in India. Our contacts with other Sikh leaders around the world also showed that they had not heard about it. The MGC then on 2/8/2016 supplied the information and the 2 video clips to them.

The MGC immediate comments on the matter are as follows:-

  1. The 2 video clips cannot amount to any “directive”. It cannot either be Hukamnama or Matta or Gurmatta. The 2 video clips were recorded by Academy and one of their leaders can be seen holding the microphone. The opinion given during the interview is just like we read of various opinions in the press from various religious leaders or on You-Tube.
  2. The Sikh Rehat Maryada was approved by the Sikh Panth in 1945 and has been accepted by the Sikh world as binding on Sikhs. The SRM clearly provides the 3 banis from Dasam Granth that can be done and of no other parts. The “Jathedar” by stating in the video clip that the whole Dasam Granth is Dasmesh Bani, appears to be going against SRM.
  3. The Panth had by resolution no. 36672 passed on 3/8/1973 declared, “Chritro Pakhyan” that is inscribed in Dasam Granth as NOT Dasmesh Bani and declared it as Hindu Mythology.
  4. Any Panthic decision must come from Akal Takht.
  5. SRM clearly states that no Book should be put like and in Par with SGGS Ji. Yet this is being done at Patna Sahib in violation of SRM.
  6. That Gurtha Gaddi was bestowed by Dasam Pita only on SGGS Ji and on no other Granth or Book.
  7. SGGS Ji is complete in itself. To say some other Book is needed to complement it is actually insulting our Dhan-Dhan SGGS Ji.

  1. No one is disgracing any writing of any Guru.As suited to the Gurus the Guru writings were ADDED to Guru Granth sahib , for the final time.He could have added his own he did not.Three other Gurus did not added any writings,But we still accept the Guru Granth sahib wholly.

    Throughout history and more since 1895, this DN book has been rejected.

    The Sarb Hind conference rejected it.

    Subsequently, it has not played any part in any panthic matters.Sikhs rejected it.

    The repeated claim it contains three nitname bania.THE THREE BANIA WERE STAND ALONE COMPOSITIONS, that were added to this book, in 1895 BY MEN.
    In that action EIGHT OTHER COMPOSITIONS were TAKEN; also said to be GURU GOBIND SINGH”s writings!

    I note no, one , and not the least Harvinder kaur ji is pained to ask , while she is prepared use a website that says four tkhats, and NO where in that site is DG mentioned.

    Considering the involvement of Damdama sahib , which does not exist at all in the link provided by her.

    Then she uses a khalsa news that apparently orders the singing of one composition alledgedly to be of Guru Gobind Singh, while she ommits to tell the rest of the 80% of that news cutting says people are shocked at such decision, including the leaders of the second largest Sikh Gurduara Committee DGSMC’s Sr Tarsame Singh condemns that order.

    MGC is a legitimate body representing Sikh Gurduaras in Malaysia and Sikh interests.

    Who is one cowboy outfit to order the majority of the Sikhs gurduaras about with these false compositions?

    You also alledgepeople have not read but are mouhing off, are you suggesting you know beyond the cyber space who has read and not?

    Perhaps you would like to show us how you have read chariter one hundered and fourteen -tale of sringi rishi and prostitute and explain how you get suchanand that you says you get from the DN dg ?

    Then I would not say, who the hell are you, to tell us to go against our own Guru and make him a porn writer ?

  2. There are many religious institutions with substantial funds and assets combined witth steady source of cash. Further these funds are generally without any effective procedures or internal controls and managed by people with little if any relevant financial expertise.
    All these aspects make them attractive targets for ambitious politicians and/or unscruplous people to take control directly or via proxys.
    Several religious funds in countries are thus already under the control of politicians in power and/or greedy and unscruplous individuals/groups and thus it is perceived that these funds are victims of MISMANAGEMENT-FRAUD-CORRUPTION-COLLUSION-CRONYISM-BRIBERY-KICKBACKS-NEPOTISM by their TRUSTEES-MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES.
    The malaisse may not only be at world level but also at State-City-Individual levels as GREED HAS NO LIMITS and is without ETHICS-INTEGRITY-HONESTY-OTHER VALUES.
    TRANSPARENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY IS ABSENT IN MOST CASES DUE TO THE INDIFFERENCE ATTITUDE OF THE SANGGAT.
    Above comments may also apply to Funds of Charities-Donations/NGOs/Agencies/organizations/Corporate-Public where there are TRUST FUNDS managed by others.
    No reference is made or intended to any individual or organization or trust funds as views are based on observed cases during audit of such trust funds or media reports.

  3. Gurfateh. ref comment on sad poems allowed in Gurdwaras. Reading a sad poem..(bhog of some deceased sikh)..or sehras vadhiyahn (wedding) is a personal level..just like Announcements etc are also made form Stage about upcoming programmes, appeals for donations, even announcements to remove cars blocking other cars etc etc..
    2. Dhadi Vaars were introduced by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and the 22 VAARS in SGGS were given dhunnis or popular refrains/tunes so that the SIKHS were INSPIRED by BIIR RASS ( for example Vaar Asa KI has lots of Bir rass and the vaars in SGGS give Bir rass with a liberal splattering of SPIRITUAL DIVINE MESSAGES). Thus Dhadi Vaars are an acceptable part of Diwan in a Gurdwara in SGGS presence. Bhai Gurdass jis Vaars are perfectly in tune with Gurbani and called GURBANI DEE KUNJI becasue they Explain in PLAIN PUNJABI the complexities of Gurbani…..but they were not “good enough” to be added to SGGS as “Dhur Ki bani – a decision made by GURU ARJUN JI. Bhai Nand Lal Goyahs compositions Raachnna are also similar and allowed in Kirtan/Katha. These decisions were made by the 1934 Panth and geared towards UNITY.

    3. ref Comment about Waddah Gurdwara Ipoh. Thats not a religious matter per se. It doesnt affect Sikhs outside of the Waddah Gurdawra Ipoh environment. A purely administrative matter mingled with some personal conflicts among the sangat there. Such problems are better solved at micro level by the LOCALS instead of calling in the “big boys” from the Center. Because then Team A or team B over in Ipoh might also go to Bihar/Maharashtra ?? to get a video hukmnamah to label the opposite group panth drohi dokhi etc etc. as has happened before during the ” ONLY Langgar on the Floor is Guru ka Langgar” Hukmnamah was misused by some vested interests in CANADA to incite the sangat divide them and wrest control of Guirdwaras and NOT for purely religious reasons. (and as an aside..that infamous Hukmnamah is also WIDELY BYPASSED in almost ALL Gurdwaras as impractical and divisive and introduced at the behest of vested interests. This is evidence of how far some are prepared to go to further their own vested interests)

    IN RELIGIOUS MATTERS..the MGC has the authoriity and the incentive as well as responsibility to come in. This is my personal opinion.

  4. Harvinder kaur Ji…the link you have given and your rhetorical question WHO IS SGPC to give orders contains the answer. The SGPC 2011 is UNDER BADAL/RSS Control ( let us know who disputes this??) The Article clearly says that the 2011 directive is ultra vires the SGPC passed Resolutions and the SRM itself. Thats similar to the situation that exist in some countries/Court decisions that go against the Constitution- many examples from India, Malaysia also. in 1934 the SGPC was formed by Sikhs who FOUGHT Hard AGAINST the Brtish Govt..shaheed and jailed in the thousands (read Akali Lehr da itihas and Singh Sabha Movement History)..BUT the 2011 SGPC is a totally Punjab Govt badal controlled entity..each memebr is hand picked by badal even the Jathedars are sacked and reinstated/chosen by the POLITICAL POWER. So theres your answer. You have asked WHO is SGPC ref the 1934 one BUT Accept the 2011 SGPC ?? When and IF, the Punjab SGPC is released form POLITICAL CONTROL and elected by the SIKHS and when that SGPC makes a FULL HOUSE meeting..then it will have to act according to the 1934 Resolutions SRM..because the SRM can be changed ONLY by a Sarbatt Khalsa of the Panth. My stand is..SRM 1934 stands unviolable..yours is 1934 ?? who is?? 2011..Its OK..sgpc is ok..??

  5. I am pleased that the MGC has provided its input in the case of the ‘DM’ controversy.
    Now can the President and Members of MGC provide similar leadership in the case of the Wadda Ipoh Gurdwara case which was the subject of police presence at the AGM and subsequent reports to the Police. Leadership should be pro-active and not reactive.

  6. Harvindar kaur ji..that link you gave is a personal interpretation of the authors. Also its outdated because it mentions Four takhats when there are FIVE takhats.
    The Official SRM in the PUNJABI VERSION is the Bottom line and its available from the SGPC.

  7. Who is SGPC to give directives to Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s sikhs on how one should read the bani? Why one should comply to it? They are just ordinary people making decisions that they think is right but NOT necessarily it is.

    ਰੁਮਾਲਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ (੨)
    ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਜਵੀਜ਼ ਤੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਰੁਮਾਲੇ ਜਰੂਰ ਹੀ ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ,ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਐਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਅਸਲੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ।ਇਸ ਲਈ ਐਵੇਂ ਲਕੀਰਾਂ ਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਤੀਮਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਯੋਗ ਹੈ।ਇਹ ਇਕੱਤਰਤਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਪਾਸ ਸ਼ਿਫਾਰਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੀਘਰ ਹੀ ਅਮਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਗਸ਼ਤੀ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਭੇਜੇ ਅਥਵਾ ਇੱਕ ਐਲਾਨ ਸਮੂੰਹ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਮੇਟੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਗੋਚਰ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਰੁਮਾਲੇ ਚੜਾਵੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਲੈਣੇ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ।
    ਦਸ਼ਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਪਾਠ (੩)
    ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਯੂਗਾਂਡਾ ਦੀ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਦਸ਼ਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਤੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਇਸਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।ਕੇਵਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਾਕਫੀਅਤ ਅਥਵਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ਼ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰਕੇ ਪਾਠ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਥਵਾ ਭੋਗ ਪਾਇਆ
    ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
    ਨੀਂਹ ਥੱਲੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (੪)
    ਸ.ਮੁਨਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਥੱਲੇ ਪੰਜ-ਗੰ੍ਰਥੀ ਜਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਥਵਾ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਰੱਖਣੇ ਅਯੋਗ ਹਨ।ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਜਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਢਾਉਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਲਈ ਐਸਾ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ।

  9. I really don’t understand what the fuss is all about.
    1) What is the issue of conducting the Sri Dasam Granth katha in the gurdwara? All the katha that I have tentatively listened to has only enlighten me and gave anand, as it is all about Almighty praises nothing of that sort as being said by those who think they know what is written in SDG but actually has yet to attend proper classes to learn or make initiative to learn from the correct source. There are many among us who think that they know the content of SDG but actually are misinforming the sangat with lots of negativity.

    3) Sometimes some sad poem or some historical poems were read in gurdwara when in actual fact they were not part of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji or anything related to Almighty, and yet there have not been any objection to these presentations. So why do we have against SDG?
    4) There is not a single Sikh denying Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the Guru. Why is this being made as an issue?
    5) However, no one should disgrace the writings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. How do you know that it is not the writing of the Guru Ji? Your reading is based on some self proclaim scholars who probably have not done enough learning. Understanding gurbani is through Almighty’s blessings. Every individual is limited to their faith and their understanding. Why are some people imposing something when they hv yet to do their own years of research instead of jumping into conclusions. There are new findings and authentications of Guru Gobind Singh Ji ‘s bani, why is this not being acknowledged? Fine if some do not want to believe it but those who do, they are not translating it in any negative way or against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. So what is the issue?
    6) Yes, there are articles that are anti SDG, but the fact is that there more articles that are confirming facts & evidence that SDG is Guru Ji ‘s bani than the anti articles. Simple google search will confirm the results.
    The point that I’m making here is that why is that there is an issue & objection of doing katha on SDG when all we learn is nothing against teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Believe me if there is anything against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Waheguru Ji would not have allowed the katha in the Gurdwara despite of all odds of challenges were given to the SGGS Academy.

  10. malaysian gurdwaras council is a legitimate malaysian Body with majority of Gurdwaras as its members all over malaysia. Its absolutley right to uphold the SRM which ahs been the guiding light for all Gurdwars for past 100++ Years. There was never any controversy regarding the SRM. Lately the “Foreign” granthis from India and splinter groups like the SGGSA trying to rock the boat vai their individual views. MGC and Gurdwara Pulapol are to be congratulated for putting their foot down. The SGGS is our one and ONLY GURU and as per the SRM from Akal takhat accepted for over 120 years only GURBANI form SGGS is to be read/sung in the presence of The SGGS. Bhai Gurdass ji s vaars and Bhai nanad Lal Goyas compositions can be sung as explanations to Gurbani. Nothing else is allowed.
    The SRM also gives Local Authorities like the MGC full authority to settle local issues locally .This should not be disputed.

  11. Gurfateh.
    Running away, pushing it all under the carpet..closing the subject..etc etc are not the right approach. Divisions dont go away or magically disappear if they are buried/out of sight. That is imaginary solution. Our Guru provides the way..sit down and discuss and settle it. The Conciliatory approach is already there..for past 100 years more or less..the SRM. Let all agree to follow the established Sikh Rehat Maryada in all Gurdwaras..in public do as you wish but dont try and impose your own on others – thats the best way.
    Any attempts to upset the apple cart now and displace the SRM is the way of creating more divisions, fragmentations etc. That should not be allowed by the authorities under any circumstances.
    SIKHS under the SRM are given LOCAL AUTHORITY – local problems can be settled locally without any foreign intereference. That should also not be allowed under any pretense.

  12. MGC has acted in good faith.There is nothing for MGC to be bent upon.The MGC has a duty of car towards its role and the Sikh maryada.The MGC has been contacted by the Akal takhat in the past and is recognised national body of Sikh Gurduaras.
    The intent to divide is being rolled by this rouge group calling itself SGGSA.It appears there is a lot of ignorance on part of this SGGSA.It is bent on dividing the community by putting individuals views across everybody else.
    This u tube is false and fraud, as I have spoken to the UK Sikh Gurduara Board, and another national organisation of Gurduaras in Danmark, who have confirmed no such declaration has been made nor is likely to be made in such circumstances.

    An issue that these misled RSS snatanis have kept the Panth divided over, to be decided , would have attracted world wide opinion,and news as majority of the Sikhs are with Guru Granth sahib and not this sex porno book.

    having been caiught lyuing over the first tube, then two couplets, these fellows are despertely trying to fool the Sikhs.

    Since the Sikh Gurduaras have been on Malaysian soil,dsm potha has never been an issue, nor most people were aware.This so called academy has been silently brainwashing young in the last few years, and now feels it can cow everybody else with its views.

    This SGGSA person is very ignorant about Sikh directives.All directives to the Sikh panth are issued from Akal Takhat premises through adesh , sandesh or Hukamnama.

    It is such a shame these shameless NINDAKS are towing the majority Sikh mindset, but trying like its mother organisation to intimidate and fool others.

    It about time Sikhs report this false organisation and it’s book to authorities and stop sending children there as ,talibanised kids will come along.

    Closing the subject and returning to status quo – is SGGSA’s responsibility, not MGCs.

    Nowwhere else has any Sikhs got up to so much mischief as this SGGSA is getting up to.

    Pulapol Gurduara ought to be congratulated for standing up for the reocgnised and legally accepted Sikhs maryada.

    End of the do these mischief makers not understand , the PANTH has decided on this matter , and left those who wish to read it, go ahead.

    SGGSA has also been mischeivious in interfering with the Punjabi version of the SRM, and adding false words about Guru Gobind Singh and the sex potha, in English,are people that blind to not realise where the mischief is coming from?

    Sad day, these fellows from SGGSA are BENT, slanted and up to making mischief.
    For over 130 years no Gurduara in Malaysia or anywhere in the world has ever allowed a sex stories potha to be sat along with Guru Granth sahib.Are people blind to this?

    Why now are these uneducated snatani derwadhi fools trying to destable the Sikhs in Malaysia?
    Persona ego, with deluded grandiose ideas like the tksaali Kartar?Such is a mental illness.

  13. When will there be a END on this DIVISIVE SUBJECT?

    Both sides appear to be bent on proving the other party wrong and own view as right when THERE IS NO WAY OF SETTLING THE DIFFERENT VIEWS.

    The only achievement can be DIVISION OF SANGGAT whis ia ALREADY FRAGMENTED.

    If both sides view are accepted then the only conclusion can be that BOTH SIDES MAY BE IGNORANT BUT PRETEND TO BE EXPERTS ABOUT THE HOLY SCRIPTURES OF SIKHS.

    Many like me may be further driven away from Sikhi by their arguments which may indicate their self serving intentions.
    CLOSE THIS SUBJECT AS IT MAY NOT HAVE ANY CONCLUSION ZIF BOTH PARTIES HAVE INTEREST OF SIKHISM.
