Nimit Kaur Bellmawr may be blind but it did not stop her from chasing her dreams, including that of helping others.

Her can-do spirit has landed her the 2024 Camden County MLK Freedom Medal Winner. The New Jersey country introduced the award in 2001, named after US civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is what is written in a citation on Nimit on the county website:

“Nimit Kaur defies expectations and serves as a beacon of inspiration within the Indian community. Despite being blind, Nimit has not only achieved her dreams but has garnered prestigious accolades, including Presidential Awards during the Obama administration, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, honors and a Master’s in Social Work, and was the speaker in her graduating class.

“She has emerged as a prominent advocate for disability rights. Co-founding the Nimit Foundation, a non-profit that provides food donations to individuals with disabilities, seniors, and anyone facing hardships and does not have access to resources. This includes countless hours of volunteering to give back to communities all across New Jersey. The Nimit Foundation donated to local cultural celebrations in towns where the youth were not feeling represented for their cultural holidays.

She fearlessly fought for disability rights with the state and opened the Disability Office at Rutgers University in Camden, leaving an indelible mark on the accessibility landscape of her academic institution. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, community advocacy, and the profound impact one person can make, even in the face of adversity.”
