Mata Dhan Kaur, the wife of the late Giani Bachan Singh who had served as a granthi at various gurdwaras, passed away on 21 April 2015.
She was with her family in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, when she passed on at the age of 105. She leaves 52 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Along with her husband, their seva journey began at Gurdwara Sahib Ulu Klang in 1954 where Giani Bachan served as a granthi for 10 years. They then spent three years at Gurdwara Sahib Sentul (1964-1967) and a year at Gurdwara Sahib High Street.
Their longest stint was at Gurdwara Sahib Parlimen, where he served as a granthi for 17 years from 1969-1986.
“Our extended family lived out of one room at the gurdwara [Parlimen]. Her love held the family together,” said her youngest son, Chamkaur Singh, a manager at the SGGS Gurmat Sangeet Academy based at Sentul. He used to manage the Malaysian Bhangra Group.
“She was a simple person, a housewife. Many women would come to her for counsel.”
Her other son, Giani Jaswant Singh, had served as a granthi at Gurdwara Sahib Sentul for 13 years after retiring form the army.
