Sikh groups will perform six acts at Singapore’s ‘Tapesty of Sacred Music’, a three-day event that showcases how different cultures and people around the world express their faith, will take place at Esplanade in April.

Singapore’s Gurmat Sangeet Academy will be one of the six local groups performing  on April 16 and 17 at the event, now into its ninth year.

The event showcases the lesser known music that is rarely performed outside of religious grounds. It also serves as a platform to bring together devotional singing of different religions on a single platform and showcase this to the greater public.

“To me it’s a beautiful event as we get to hear how different groups use music to connect spiritually. We may use different words and styles but the purpose is the same. So it’s great to see how similar we are despite our differences,” said Singapore’s Sikh Centre Vice Chairman Rajeshpal Singh.

For the Gurmat Sangeet Academy of Singapore, this will be their third time participating.

“This year would be especially important for us as we will be doing nine compositions over two days in three separate performances with 43 of our Gurmat Sangeet practitioners. The participants have been practicing very hard for close to three months now for this performance”, said Rajeshpal.

“The performers will be singing in Raag Tilang and also in Raag Bhairvi. In addition they will be doing so in our string instruments such Dilruba, Taus, Rebab and Sarangi,” said Gurmat Sangeet Academy music instructor Mahabir Singh.

The event is free and is open to all. It is organised by the Sikh Centre under the Central Sikh Gurdwara Board (CSGB).
