The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has formally returned to the Barisan Nasional (BN) fold following the resolution of a prolonged legal tussle, as political parties begin early preparations for the next general election.

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, made the announcement at PPP’s 72nd general assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) on Saturday (Jan 18).

The announcement was met with jubilation in the convention hall, marking a symbolic moment for PPP, which was a founding member of the Umno-led BN coalition when it was formed in 1974 to replace the Alliance.

“Here I am holding a letter from the Registration of Societies Department (ROS) dated Nov 25, 2025, which states that PPP is a party in Barisan Nasional,” Zahid told delegates.

PPP is currently led by president Dr J. Loga Bala Mohan. The party’s leadership also includes Inder Singh Beant Singh as secretary-general and Daljit Singh as treasurer general.

Several senior BN leaders were present at the assembly, including BN secretary-general Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, BN/Umno Women’s chief Dr Noraini Ahmad and BN/Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

BN is a component of the ruling Madani coalition led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who assumed office in 2022. Under the Federal Constitution, Malaysia’s next general election must be held by Feb 17, 2028.
