Babbulicious, whose real name is Babbu Singh, brought Panjabi diasporic energy to a high-profile political moment in New York with a live performance at the swearing-in ceremony of Zohran Mamdani.
The Canada-based Panjabi singer, closely associated with the Brampton–Toronto Panjabi-Canadian music scene, performed his viral track Gaddi Red Challenger during Mamdani’s inauguration on Jan 1.
The Democratic politician becomes the city’s youngest mayor since 1892, its first Muslim mayor and its first mayor born in Africa.
And Mamdani seemed to be singing along as Canada-based Panjabi singer Babbulicious performed his popular song at the end of the inauguration ceremony.
The song, which has gained traction across South Asian social media platforms, is emblematic of a new wave of Panjabi music shaped by diaspora identity and political consciousness.
Videos of the performance circulated widely online, drawing attention to the growing visibility of Panjabi-Canadian artists in civic and political spaces beyond Canada. Cultural commentators noted the moment as a convergence of music, migration and representation, underscoring the expanding influence of South Asian diaspora culture in North American public life.
