An online bhangra competition, probably the first of its kind, booted with a handsome Rp500,000 (about US$8,000) cash prize for the winner is underway.
Bhangra groups and individuals worldwide are invited to send in videos of their performance for the Global Bhangra Championship called Bhangra Blues.
Submit your videos before 25 June 2017 to get a waiver of the registration fees. The closing date is 17 July 2017.
What do you have to do? Whether in a group or individually, take a video of yourself dancing bhangra and submit it. The 25 shortlisted entries will make their way to the quarter finals and so on. See rules here.
“Bhangra Blues and the Global Bhangra Championship are our contribution to further popularise the folk form and the culture of Panjab,” said Samir Singh from The Sikh Chamber of Commerce (TSCC), the organiser of the online event.
“We are in touch with several individuals and teams from across the globe that are preparing their video entries,” he tells Asia Samachar in an email.
TSCC is a New Delhi, India-based business chamber that has been organising a series of events, with the latest being the Wealth of Woman Conclave (WOW) in March and Baba Iqbal Singh Mission to Reboot Punjab Through Value Based Education which was attended by former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. How did the idea come about? While Bhangra is intrinsically a cultural identifier, the oganiser is aware of its ‘strong commercial relevance’, with teams, groups and individuals earning by performing at various events.
“Lately, a lot of Bhangra academies have been launched – both with a dance/cultural perspective, as well as a health and fitness offering; the vigorous and fun nature of the dance appealing to fitness enthusiasts around the world.
“Online videos of well-produced Bhangra performances in beautiful locales have become very popular, some even going viral,” TSCC said in an email.
