Jyot Singh, a 27-year-old Democrat and son of Sikh immigrants from India, has made history by becoming the first Sikh American and Indian American elected to the Georgia state legislature in the United States.

The Yale graduate defeated Republican Yassin Moghazy in the November 3 midterm elections, winning Georgia House District 97 with approximately 68% of the votes against his opponent’s 32%, according to reported unofficial results.

“We won!!! Thank you Georgia! I’m honored to be your representative-elect in HD-97,” Singh announced on social media following his victory.

His constituency covers parts of Duluth, Peachtree Corners and Norcross, alongside Berkeley Lake in Gwinnett County, a diverse community with a substantial immigrant population.

Raised in Norcross in a working-class Sikh family, Jyot attended Gwinnett County public schools before graduating from Yale University in 2021 with a degree in Global Affairs.

A community organiser and entrepreneur, he has worked in political advocacy and Democratic campaigns. His election marks his first successful bid for public office.

His campaign platform prioritised affordable housing, expanded healthcare access, improved mental health services, public education, immigrant rights and economic security for working families.

Jyot has also emphasised the influence of Sikh teachings on his public service. On his campaign website, he identifies seva (selfless service) and sarbat da bhala (the well-being of all) as guiding principles behind his political involvement.

His election campaign began and concluded with gatherings at the Guru Nanak Mission Society in Norcross, where supporters celebrated his victory with the Sikh call of “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal”.

Jyot succeeds Democrat Ruwa Romman, who vacated the seat to pursue a state Senate bid.

His victory represents a milestone in Sikh political representation in Georgia, bringing a turban-wearing Sikh voice into the state’s legislative assembly.
