Asia Samachar received a message from a mother of of four children. Her daughter intends to pursue a course in medicine. But they face financial challenges. What shall we tell her? Please advise and share ideas on what K Kaur and her family should do. This is for real.

THE MESSAGE FROM K KAUR:

Sat sri akal. I have a daughter who wants to do MBBS (medical degree). She scored 3.59 in the foundation in medical science. We are not in the situation to bear the expenses. We have 4 children: two in the university, one sitting for the SPM and the youngest had just completed the PT3. We survive on income from one lorry. Our financial situation has turned for the worse after the GST. I’m a housewife. Please guide us how on how to fulfill her dreams. Who should we refer too? Please help.

  1. Seven men took off with P1 million (US$21,200) worth of donations from Khalsa Diwan Indian Sikh Temple in Paco, Manila, on 1 Dec 2015. Golak theft at Malim Nawar gurdwara Pre-dawn break-in at Titiwangsa gurdwara

LOSING GURDWARA FUNDS TO THIEVES APPEARS TO BE ACCEPTABLE AS IT DOES NOT HAVE THE CONSENT OF THE COMMITTEES BUT
USING THE GURDWARA FUNDS TO ASSIST NEEDY SIKHS MAY NOT BE ACCEPTABLE TO MOST GURDWARA COMMITTEE.

GURDWARA COMMITTEES AND SANGGAT SHOULD CHANGE TO THEIR MINDSETS ON THE USAGE OF GURDWARA FUNDS.
NEW BUILDINGS DO NOT HELP THE NEEDY AMONG THE SANGGAT BUT THOSE WHO ‘BENEFIT’ FROM THE EXPENDITURE WHICH MAY INVOLVE MISMANAGEMENT-ABUSE AND FRAUD FOR PERSONAL GREED.

  2. Some Gurdwaras in Malaysia have millions as fixed deposits in banks. These are funds belonging to Sanggat and can and should be used to assist needy Sikh families especially where education is involved. Sadly not many Managements of Gurdwaras are inclined to do this with justification that this is not the function of Gurdwaras. A change of mindset is necessary. Sr Harcharan Singh Ji may be able to assist in this respect. His e-mail address is
    >vharcharan@yahoo.com<.

Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysian may have information of some Sikh Trust Funds which provide financial assistance for eductation. I remember there was one in memory of late Dr Tara Singh and another in memory of the first Sikh Member of Malaysian Parliament Sr Mahima Singh also of Seramban. Dato GS Gill [Sports King] of KL also was rumored to have started a similar fund in memory of his wife Mdm Harwant. [Apologies if I am wrong.]

    Hope this info will assist.

  3. If we in the south Jakarta Gurdwara could be of any be of any help we will surely do happily. I know of several Malaysians studied medicine in our country.
We are indebted to several Malaysian generous Sikhs who helped us in raising funds for Jakarta Gurmat school in 1210 and always cherish good memories. Our house or Gurdwara can surely let her stay plus food.
