Perakian Harmeet Singh and two other Sikh players are the fresh legs in the list of 35 trainees for Malaysia’s senior hockey squad.

The other two named by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) last week were Harmesh Singh and Harvinder Singh.

They join Baljit Singh who was until now the sole Sikh player in the senior squad.

Harmeet, 23, and Harmesh, 22, played for Sapura in the Premier Division of the Malaysia Hockey League, while Harvinder turned out for Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club, writes blogger Jugjet.

Harmeet went to Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Guru Nanak in Ipoh, Perak, and then to Sekolah Menengah Anderson for his secondary studies. He was offered to pursue Diploma in Mechatronics at Politeknik Ungku Omar in Ipoh. He had represented his school and the state in hockey.

In 2013, he made the initial cut for the Malaysian junior hockey squad but luck was not on his side.

However, he kept up the fighting spirit and has now made it the senior squad.

Harmeet was active in Sikh camps (simply called samelans in Malaysia) and was part of the Perak team that took home the Gurdwara Cup for hockey.

“The Perak team had also won in 2010 but the team then had players form various states. In 2013, Perak won for the first time with young local boys,” said one of the members of the team.
