Happy Hockey SSU Kelab Aman, a voluntary hockey outfit based in Kuala Lumpur run by parents, is home to the largest pool of Sikh children under 12 years undergoing hockey training.
Formed as a wing under SSU Kelab Aman, it now has 70 children from various faiths, from the ages of three, undergoing consistent and systematic field hockey training.
“We easily have the largest pool of Sikh children under 12 learning hockey. There are about 40 of them,” Happy Hockey chairman Sukhjit Singh tells Asia Samachar when met at its fundraising dinner in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
The fundraising dinner is expected to help defray cost for running the training outfit for some time, and the organiser expect the next fundraising dinner to be held perhaps in three years time.
Subahan Kamal, who was elected unopposed as president of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) in April, was the guest of honour at the dinner.
Subahan, who is also president of the Selangor Hockey Association, pledged RM10,000 to Happy Hockey and agreed to look into its turf bookings for free or at the very least on concession rate.
The hockey programme launched in November 2013 is run by volunteer coaches on Sundays. They started with the Kelab Aman artificial pitch, but now have to move to other pitches due to the growing number of participants.
