RAUB, PAHANG: The small Sikh Sangat at Raub, located about 100 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, had joined many Sikhs communities in Malaysia and around the world last weekend to commemorate the 550th birth of Guru Nanak.

They had organised an akhand path, a continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib which usually runs over three days, at Gurdwara Sahib Raub from Nov 10-12, 2019.

“We are a small community and always are hoping for foreign Jathas to come and do kirtan katha at the gurdwara,” Rabinder Singh, a retired Malaysian armed forces veteran, told Asia Samachar.

Gurdwara Sahib Raub management committee is led by Avtar Singh and Sister Amarjit Kaur. Other key officials are secretary Sharanjit Kaur and treasurer Amarjit Kaur.

The Advent of Guru Nanak

1
One of the many sketches purportedly depicting Guru Nanak and his supposed companions Bhai Mardana and Bhai Bala. Did Bala exist?
By Karminder Singh | OPINION |

Guru Nanak was born on 1 Baisakh 1469. The corresponding date on the Gregorian calendar is 15 April, 1469. Historian Karam Singh established ] more than one century ago and beyond any doubt ] that the date was altered into Katik di Puranmasi by a gamut of gullible Sikhs, non-Sikhs, anti-Sikhs and others with other agendas.

Sikhs are stuck with a spiritual leadership that has sold its soul; institutions that are under the control of anti-Sikh forces; clergy that has taken Sikhi back to 1468; intellectuals who are silenced by the burden of their grants; a religion that has been hijacked by the deras, sants, babas, cults and deviant sects; and a general body that is largely lethargic.

We stand crippled against correcting this one single error of celebrating the birth of our Guru on the wrong day.

But the distorted birth date of Guru Nanak is just one instance of a long list of wrongs that have been inflicted on Guru Nanak. His life story, bani, teachings, philosophy and messages stand adulterated to the point of being totally diluted of its authenticity, originality and uniqueness: the distinctiveness that Bhai Gurdas depicts in his seminal verse

ਮਾਿਰਆ ਿਸੱਕਾ ਜਗਤ ਿਵਚ ਨਾਨਕ ਿਨਰਮਲ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਯਾ॥

MARIYA SIKKA JAGAT VICH NANAK NIRMAL PANTH CHALEYA.

In the world of spirituality, the Panth of Guru Nanak had its trademark in its uniqueness as being un-contaminated (by existing /un-enlightened beliefs).

The source and fuel of the adulteration are some 2,000 odd stories about Guru Nanak that we euphemistically call Sakhis, and are repeated by our clergy – parcharaks, preachers, kirtanias, dhadees as well as our writers and historians.

The origin of these sakhis are a variety of books called Janam Sakhis – the oldest being composed in 1733 by Dya Raam and illustrated with pictures by Alam Chand Raj. This Janam Sakhi – also called the B40 Janam Sakhi, (after its Accession Number assigned by the India Office Library in London) is thus written 264 years AFTER Guru Nanak’s advent.

The most popular Janam Sakhi amongst Sikhs is Bhai Bala’s Janam Sakhi – purportedly written by Guru Nanak’s Hindu companion Bala. Bhai Bala is a fictitious character. He did not exist. Guru Nanak’s companion was Mardana. How many Sikhs know of this basic untruth – that their entire story of Guru Nanak is written by a non-existent character?

Viewed collectively, these Janam Sakhis paint Guru Nanak as a mystic, a miracle performer, a faith healer, a magician, a purveyor of superstitious beliefs, a practitioner of super ]natural powers, a recluse, an ascetic, an unproductive child, a neglecting father, demanding blind faith and so much more. Snakes come over to shade him as he slept while his cows ate the fields of others. His father slaps him for wasting 20 rupees of his hard earned money at a time when the rupee was non existant in India. In the wink of an eye he brings back to life fields eaten by his cows. Elsewhere he drowns in a river and comes back to life three days later. He brings dead people back to life, and stops a mountain of a stone hurled at him with his palm. He flies over the mountains to meet Yogis and Sidhs residing there. He orders his son to hang out clothes to dry in the middle of the night and tells his disciple Bhai Lehna to eat a corpse. This is the Guru Nanak that Sikhs seem to know. The adulterated one, of course.

What could be worse than the Sikh world having tolerated a contamination to Guru Nanak’s name even.

Sir Ullama Mohamad Iqbal, PhD (Ludwig, Germany) captures the source of the wrongs that have been inflicted upon Guru Nanak in his Urdu language book Bang-e-Dara.

Shama ]e Huq Se Jo Munavar Hai Ye Voh Mehfil Na Thee

Barshey Rehmat Hue Lekin Zamee Kabil Na Thee.

Nanak was the lamp of enlightenment, but the audience was not one which prized illumination . it was blind. Nanak brought along the rain of mercy that poured from the heavens, but the land was not one which cherished rains . it was utterly barren.

Aaah Budkismat Rahey Awaaze Huq Se Bekhabar

Ghafil Aapney Ful Kee Sheereene Sey Hota Hai Sazar.

Poor wretched people – they never did awaken, remaining oblivious to the call of Reality. Just like a mighty tree whose essence is dead to the awareness of the sweetness of its own fruit.

Dr. Iqbal’s lament is an accurate depiction of the Sikh psyche in relation to Guru Nanak. Put plainly: The Sikh psyche is blind to the enlightenment of Guru Nanak and the Sikh heart is barren to the blessings of Guru Nanak.

Put even more plainly, the Sikh heart and mind is incapable of appreciating Guru Nanak. Put even more plainly, the coming of Guru Nanak is a waste to the people of India. Dr. Iqbal captures this waste in the following verse:

Hind Ko Lekin Khyalee Falsafey Pur Naaz Thaa.

But the people of Hindustan were content to hold on, with (false) pride to their hollow and fictional spiritualities.

Powerful words. Equally powerful a slap to the spiritual face of Sikhs of Guru Nanak. Powerful but true. Necessary even.

In the absence of leadership from Sikh Institutions; and in the dearth of courageous intellectuals and thinkers of sufficient standing and adequate numbers towards reversing the onslaught of against the spiritual legacy of Guru Nanak, the burden falls upon the shoulders of the ordinary Sikh to enlighten himself, awaken and take a stand.

Finding Guru Nanak: An environmental message for humanity

1
Rawang gurdwara with solar panels
By Malkeet Singh Rawang | OPINION |

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a game changer who preached a life of harmony with all of existence including Mother Nature.

Not only was Nanak a reformist, challenging age-old rituals but also advocating respect and protection of Mother Nature. He wanted communities to have equal access to clean water as the source of life that brings food for both humans and animals. This is illustrated by Guru Nanak’s numerous encounters during his travels including the famous Panja Sahib narrative.

Guru Nanak’s eco-theological teachings were spread more than 500 years ago, long before the alarm bells rang on environmental devastation, climate change, pollution and rampaging forest fires.

The founder of Sikhism was a nature-lover. He inspired humanity to look at Mother Nature as the divine presence of the Almighty Creator through a symbiotic relationship with the environment.

Guru Nanak foresaw the imminent dangers of global warming and ecological degradation as quoted in the Japji Sahib:

‘Pavan guru paani pita mata dharat mahat, divas raat dui daee daya kheylai sakal jagat’

Air is the Guru, Water the Father, and the Earth is the Great Mother. They give us life, we sleep in their lap night and day, so we should not spoil them.

In essence, Nanak was driving home the inherent importance of keeping our earthly environment safe.  Translated into everyday language, Guru Nanak was telling us not to cut trees and forbid the indiscriminate throwing of rubbish.

As a conservationist, Guru Nanak laid the foundation for humanity to pay obeisance to God’s creation. He stressed that our daily life must be based in sharing nature’s bountiful resources equitably .

Hence, it is not surprising that Sikh organisations have adopted Guru Nanak’s eco-theology and embarked on environmental awareness projects globally.

Amongst the most prominent is EcoSikh, headquartered in the United States of America, espousing in their mission statement:

“We honour our Gurus’ wisdom by believing that all humans have an intrinsic sensitivity to the natural world, and that a sustainable, more just society is possible, where water, air, land, forests, and biodiversity remain vibrant, living systems for our generation and future generations.”

To commemorate Guru Nanak’s 550th Birth Anniversary, EcoSikh launched a global campaign to plant one million trees before the end of 2019.

Rawang gurdwara: First built in 1938

Closer to home, kudos to the Gurdwara Sahib Rawang for being one of the earliest adopters in harnessing solar energy for a cleaner and more sustainable environment through the installation of 48 units of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in 2016.

For 50 years, Gurdwara Sahib Rawang has been involved with the harvesting of rainwater. Concrete tanks collect and store rainwater for washing of cooking utensils and general cleaning.

In line with Guru Har Rai’s aspiration of building Green Gurdwaras, plans are afoot in landscaping compound of the Gurdwara Sahib Rawang with flora and fauna upon completion of the building expansion project.

Interestingly, the Gurdwara grounds were home to several fruit-bearing mango trees in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It is heartening to see the regeneration and renewal of this practice soon.

The Sikh community of Rawang must participate in conservation projects which use recycling, clean and renewable energy supplies and locally-grown organic food sources. They can support green workshops on home-grown organic vegetables and herbs, harvesting rainwater and composting techniques among others.

Guru Nanak decreed that it is the moral and spiritual duty of every Sikh to look after Mother Nature. Indeed, Sikhs are reminded of the importance of eco-theology in their daily prayers. We will find Nanak in the exuberance and beauty of Mother Nature.

Ayodhya dispute: India’s Supreme Court shows ignorance of Sikh religion – GSC

1
By Global Sikh Council | PRESS RELEAS14 Nov 2019 |

Global Sikh Council (GSC) is outraged at the judgement of the Indian Supreme Court issued on 10 November 2019. This judgement in some parts is seriously flawed, historically inaccurate and totally wrong on Sikh religion. It states that

  • Sikhs are a Cult.
  • Guru Nanak sought “darshan” of Ram Chander birth place at Ayodhia.
  • Guru Nanak got “appearance of God” which prepared him to go to see Ram Chander’s birth place
  • Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh ji also sought “darshan” of Ram Chander birth place at Ayodhia.

Supreme Court judges showed great ignorance of the Sikh Religion, by calling Sikh Gurus as Hindus and calling the 5th major religion of the World a mere sect of Hinduism. A cursory look at the Sikh belief in one God, and not worship of many gods and goddesses, equality of all human beings and no caste system would have given the judges a much-needed understanding of the Sikh Religion before pronouncing wrong judgements.

India’s Supreme Court issued a seriously flawed and historically inaccurate judgment granting ownership of the disputed Ayodhya Babri Masjid site to the Hindu community. In a lengthy judgement, the court accepted that the demolition of the mosque in 1992 had been illegal, as was the surreptitious placing of Hindu idols in the mosque in 1949 claiming that they had ‘just miraculously appeared’ and were a proof that the mosque had been built on the site of the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram.

In their long-winded judgement, the judges seemed anxious to implicate Sikhs by using fake history to conclude that the site should go to the Hindu community. Of course, Guru Nanak Sahib and other Gurus went to Ayodhia to preach Sikhism. Guru Nanak during his travels of over 28,000 kilo metres, he also went to Mecca and Goya, places of founders of other religions not because he was a Muslim, or a Buddhist or a Hindu, but went to preach his message of one God and oneness of humanity. The idea of God appearing to Guru Nanak is false as according to Guru Nanak, God has no physical form.

The Supreme Court judgment appears to be politically motivated as was given on the eve of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak and the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor from India to (the Guru’s place where he left for heavenly aboard) Pakistan. The gurdwara at Katarpur Sahib and the surrounding area had been generously renovated by the Pakistan government. This is seen as a growing friendship between Sikhs and Muslims and a threat to BJP who is bent upon turning India into a Hindu State, by absorbing Sikhs into Hinduism and subduing other minorities. It is disgraceful that, Mr Modi had used the compliant Supreme Court to try to create suspicion and distrust between Sikhs and Muslims while at the same time relegating members of Sikhs to the status of a Hindu cult.

Global Sikh Council calls upon all Sikhs and people of other faiths to condemn these games of the BJP and their use of the Supreme Court to further their determination to make India a Hindu state.

Lady Singh Dr Kanwaljit Kaur OBE

President, Global Sikh Council.

[For the record, there is also another faction claiming to represent GSC, from whom Asia Samachar has also received statements in the recent past]

Baba Nanak celebrations: Content missing, focus on glamour and glitter

1
Ber Sahib Gurudwara, Sultanpur Lodhi all decked up for 550th birth of Guru Nanak – Photo from Harsimrat Kaur Badal Facebook page
By Jagtar Singh | OPINION |

Chandigarh: When the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Punjab government entered the race, it seemed that they were competing to propagate the legacy of Guru Nanak, the Founder of the Sikh Faith in the year of his 550th birth anniversary. What happened at Sultanpur Lodhi, the centre of the anniversary celebrations, proved it wrong. It was the ego and vested political interests that clashed. Missing from the celebrations was the content of the teachings of Baba Nanak.

When Baba Nanak set out on his mission to interact with the world after his enlightenment at Sultanpur Lodhi where he had shifted from Nankana, now in Pakistan, the very first message that he conveyed was identifying himself with the wretched of the earth by opting to accept invitation from Bhai Lalo, a person who belonged to the lowest strata of society. He rejected the offer from Malik Bhago, a money bag, to host him to lavish meal.

He put his experience of 17 years of this interaction across the world during which period he went upto Mecca in Arabia, Dhaka in the east and so on and finally settled down at Kartarpur Sahib where after his return where he gave practical shape to his model of ideal society and ideal man based upon egalitarianism and human dignity.

The SGPC [Shiromani Parbandhak Gurdwara Committee] is the custodian of the Sikh faith although it has now confined itself to just the management of the gurdwara, that too in a high cost corporate way but without making any positive impact. This body was expected to propagate the teachings of Baba Nanak from its lavish Rs 11 crore tent erected specially for these celebrations. One can’t expect it from the Punjab government.

As a matter of principle, the government should keep away from such activities but that is not the case in India.

It now seems from what happened yesterday that the SGPC ruthlessly splurged Rs 11 crore of devotees’ money (golak money) just to provide space to 5-time chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to address the gathering that too had been mobilised by the Akali Dal as President Ram Nath Kovind had been invited.

It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government had offered that Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh should preside over the joint stage that should host the dignitaries. This did not happen. Badal was the only political leader who was allowed to address from the SGPC stage in the presence of Kovind.

Kovind earlier attended the Punjab government function.

Did the SGPC spend Rs 11 crore just to facilitate Badal to address the gathering?

The only purpose message that was delivered came from Akal Takht Jathedar. He touched upon wide range of issues in the context of teachings of Guru Nanak. He referred to caste and status ridden Sikh society, disastrous effect on environment and international relations but offered no solution.
The basic issue is whether the Sikhs are following the teachings of Guru Nanak or not in practice?
The answer is in the negative. And if the Sikhs have strayed from the path shown by Guru Nanak, to what purpose were these celebrations?

Lakhs of people turned up over a week at Sultanpur Lodhi to pay respect to Baba Nanak. However, the tents of the SGPC and the Punjab government were visited by a fraction.

On the other hand, the ceremony organised by Pakistan to inaugurate the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor was characterised by sobriety and grace.

Can Sikhs return to Baba Nanak? This issue has been conveniently side-stepped during the glittering 550th anniversary celebrations. It might have satisfied bloated ego of some political leaders but they seem to have further belittled themselves.

Baba Nanak is an ideal and his teachings focus on way of life, not glamour and glitter.
