Penang-based Gurdwara Sahib Bayan Baru is planning a fundraising dinner on 17 October for its four-storey gurdwara building now under construction.

“We are still short by about RM1 million plus,” Sukhdial Singh, the treasurer of the fundraising team and also the gurdwara committee, tells Asia Samachar.

The new gurdwara complex project, estimated to cost RM3.4 million, is about 65% completed, with the main structure already erected.

“At the moment, they are working on the top most floor and the dome. The tiling work and fixing of the doors and windows have also started. We hope the complex can be ready by year-end, but the progress very much depends on the fund flow,” he said.

The gurdwara fund-raising team have been at work for some years now. Among others, they have opened up fund raising booths at major Sikh programmes like the annual kirtan-katha programme in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur and the Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji Annual Yaadghar semagam in Malacca.

Donations of RM1,00 and above toward the gurdwara building fund is Malaysian tax-exempt.

At the moment, the local Sikh Sangat congregate  at gurdwara in a terrace house less than 2km from the new gurdwara site. In 2003, a Sikh society was registered for the local Sikhs.

The brick laying ceremony for the new gurdwara, situated near the Snake Temple at RIBI Bayan Lepas, was completed on 7 Dec 2014.

The up-coming fundraising dinner will be held at a Chinese school had in Air Itam, Penang. Tickets are priced at RM1,000, RM3,000, RM5,000 and RM10,000 per table of 10.
