Swaran Singh, the former managing director of Sohan Singh & Sons, passed away on 17 Feb 2016. He was 94.
Sikhs in Malaysia remember him for the outlet selling waja (harmonium) and other musical instruments used for kirtan.
“He retired at the age of 90. Even when no longer running the business, he continued his trade form a room in our house in Subang Jaya,” his son Jasvinder Singh tells Asia Samachar.
“His hearing was perfect. He could tune-up anything: waja, organs, accordions, tabla, you name it.”
The business used to be located at Batu Road in Kuala Lumpur.
“I worked with my dad for one or two years, during my school day. I saw the hard times he went through,” recollects Jasvinder about his experience in the late 1970s. “He used to repair and make the waajaas. He had to refurbish them as they will get damaged due to poor packaging.”
