The air of royalty was present all around at the recent wedding reception of Gurdip Singh Gandhara and Dr Harveen Kaur Pasricha in Johor, a Malaysian state at the tail end of the Peninsular Malaysia and bordering Singapore.
The Sultan of Johor and other members of the state royal family graced the wedding reception of the son of former national cricket player Dr Harjit Singh and Kaldip Kaur.
Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah were among the royalties at the reception at Johor Bahru’s Berjaya Waterfront Hotel on 8 Feb 2016.
“He is also a long-time friend and family doctor to the Johor Royal Family,” according to an entry, dated 16 Feb 2016, at the Facebook page of the Johor Sultan.
When contacted by Asia Samachar, Dr Harjit said: “We were humbled by the presence of Tuanku and his family.”
Also present was the crown prince Tunku Ismail who carries the title Tunku Mahkota of Johor, and his consort Che’ Puan Khaleeda Bustamam.
Gurdip is an IT security consultant while Dr Harveen is a radiologist based at Putrajaya.
Dr Harjit, who has been the president of the Johor Cricket Council since 1987 and has held key positions in the Malaysian Cricket Association, was present at the coronation of the Sultan of Johor in May 2015. He was probably the only turbaned Sikh at the event then, according to an Asia Samachar report.
“I’ve know Tuanku personally. I’ve been serving as a family doctor for more than three decades now,” he had then told Asia Samachar.
On 9 May 2015, Dr Harjit led a team from Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru to receive the Sultan of Johor who attended a Vaisakhi dinner held at the only gurdwara in the state capital. During the visit, the Sultan had contributed RM200,000 towards the gurdwara.
