The famed Malaysian-based Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band again emerged as the best pipe band at the traditional Scottish annual games in Malaysia.
The band picked up gold medals in every category except two at the Kuala Lumpur Highland Games (KLHG 2016) held last week.
The other Sikh band at the competition was the Sunway Sikh Band which took part in some individual events.
In Malaysia and Singapore, many Sikhs have grown up with the Sri Dasmesh band. But it seems they are letting their guards down with new recruits. And even they are shining as well.

Take Surajveer Singh, for example. The 11-year old had just picked up snare drumming seriously about a year ago and has been praticising diligently without ever needing to be forced, according to the band.
At the Highland games, he wore for the Sri Dasmesh uniform.
“Members of the band will know, how much it means to finally be given the chance to put on the Royal Bana (white traditional Sikh dress) and the Kalgi (plume worn on a turban).
“Unlike other drummers, Surajveers first day in uniform wasn’t for a regular show, it was for the Kuala Lumpur Highland Games 2016,” according to the band in a Facebook posting.
He competed in the Solo Snare novice category. His tutors, Tripert Singh (seen on his right) and Keshminderjit Singh (extreme left), were hopeful that he would do well on the day, but little did they know that history was about to be written for the band!
Surajveer emerged the overall Champion of the Novice category.
