Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang, the largest gurdwara on the island of Penang, will be organising a one-day workshop on coping with stress and gain a better understanding of depression and suicide on 8 April.

“We get children who come to us asking about all these issues. Parents and the youth need to deal with them,” active social worker Sukhveer Kaur tells Asia Samachar.

“We have kids coming to us talking about gay and lesbian issue. Some are suicidal because they are not accepted by the society.

“These issues are not being addressed by our society. We also have cyber bullying, sexual issues.”

The workshop, entitled ‘Empowering Throught Awareness For Our Youth’, will be held at Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang from 9am to 4pm. It is being organised as part of the gurdwara’s Vasakhi programmes.

A team of facilitators – Dr Gaaitheri Karupiah, Dr Anita Selvarajoo, Dr. Hema Malini Palaniasamy and volunteers from Befrienders – will facilitate the first workshop on coping with stress and understanding depression and suicide.

Mangleswary Subramaniam will then handle a session entitled ‘My Thoughts are My Behaviour’s’.

The session will deal with challenges faced by the youth, including relationship goals, expectations and reality, cyber bullying and sexting.
