Lilly Singh is about to get her biggest break yet! The Canadian-born YouTube sensation who shot to fame with her comedy channel Superwoman has landed a late-night television slot in the United States.
She will take over Late Call With Carson Daly on NBC in September with her show “A Little Late With Lilly Singh”.
“It’s official. Ya girl is getting her own @nbc late night show,” Lilly tweeted today.
Daly’s show was running for the 16th season. Each night, the show hits the streets, taking the entire show on location, and bringing viewers along for the ride. The host introduces his audience to the emerging artists and stories you simply won’t find anywhere else, according to official information about the programme.
Lilly was on a tour to Malaysia and Singapore in 2017. In an interview then with Singapore’s Today, she remarked that her work was overlooked due to her Indian background.
“People are intrigued that there’s a South Asian woman who is so outspoken…But … many people, (in particular) the media, try to corner me into this niche and just identify me as this Indian woman. And they don’t even talk about what I do. They just talk about the fact that I have brown skin,” she said in the telephone interview.
At the same time, she admitted that her Indian background — both her parents are from Punjab, India, but Singh was born and raised in Toronto — has been a boon.
Last month, Lilly announced via a tweet that she was a bisexual.
“Throughout my life these have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I’m fully embracing them as my superpowers….No matter how many “boxes” you check, I encourage you to do the same x,” she wrote.
