Balveer Singh has made history as the first Sikh to be appointed commander of the Northern Brigade of the General Operations Force (PGA), a key operational arm of the Royal Malaysia Police.

Promoted to the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC), Balveer now leads Briged Utara PGA, which is responsible for safeguarding Malaysia’s northern region, particularly areas along the border with Thailand that are regarded as strategically sensitive due to cross-border movement and security risks.

The change-of-command ceremony, which also marked his promotion in rank, was held on Nov 25.

Balveer took over command of the Ipoh-based brigade after serving for more than two years as the Johor Bahru Utara (JBU) police chief, where he oversaw policing operations in one of the country’s busiest urban districts. Prior to his promotion, he held the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

At the same ceremony, Balveer’s wife, Rajvinder Kaur, assumed the role of chairperson of the Briged Utara PGA Persatuan Keluarga Polis (PERKEP), in line with the tradition of spousal leadership within police family welfare organisations.

Balveer brings strong academic credentials to his new role. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Malaya, has passed the Malaysian Bar Examination, and also earned a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the same university.

In his most immediate stint, Balveer’s tenure in Johor was characterised by a high level of operational responsiveness and a focus on community safety.

Under his watch, the JBU police frequently solved cases within 24 hours, notably in housebreaking incidents where suspects were often apprehended shortly after reports were filed.
