Malaysia went down 1-5 to defending champions Germany in their opening Group B match of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands on Sunday (Aug 16).
Despite the defeat at the Belfius Hockey Arena, national goalkeeper Muhammad Zaimi Mat Deris earned praise for an impressive performance against the world No. 5 side. He managed to deny a string of dangerous German attempts and preventing the scoreline from widening further.
Germany, the defending World Cup champions, proved too strong for the Malaysian side as they opened their campaign with a convincing victory.
Malaysia will now turn their attention to their second Group B encounter against France on Aug 17 as they seek to bounce back from the opening defeat.
The national side will complete their group-stage campaign against hosts Belgium three days later.
