0
Udaan cover for Oct-Dec 2024 issue

By Dr. Devinder Pal Singh Opinion |

Udaan is a quarterly magazine dedicated to advancing Science Fiction (SF) literature in the Punjabi language. Over the past two years, the magazine has made notable contributions to the realm of speculative fiction, offering readers unique stories, scientific essays, and children’s content. Now entering its third year, the Oct.-Dec. 2024 issue continues this tradition, presenting the works of prominent Punjabi writers, along with science-oriented content. This report highlights the structure and content of the magazine’s latest issue, focusing on the key stories, essays, and children’s section that promote both scientific knowledge and creative storytelling.

1. Story Section: Exploring Sci-Fi Themes: The main section of the magazine is dedicated to science fiction stories written by Punjabi authors. Each narrative blends science with imaginative elements, addressing thought-provoking themes.

  • “A Strange Encounter” by Dr. Devinder Pal Singh (Canada): In this story, an environmental scientist on Earth encounters an alien being who reveals the origins of life on Earth. The alien emphasizes humanity’s responsibility to safeguard the planet’s ecosystem, resonating deeply with contemporary environmental concerns. The story presents an intriguing mix of environmentalism and extraterrestrial life, encouraging readers to reflect on their role in protecting Earth’s fragile balance.
  • “Reincarnation” by Ajmer Sidhu (India): Sidhu’s story illuminates the exploitation of vulnerable individuals through beliefs in reincarnation. It examines how unscrupulous parties manipulate people’s superstitions for personal gain. Sidhu critiques the intersection of religion, gullibility, and exploitation through this lens, delivering a moral narrative about societal challenges.
  • “Purple Mask” by Roop Dhillon (England): This futuristic tale introduces a world where cyborgs are integral to human society. Dhillon explores the dynamics between humans and artificially enhanced beings, asking philosophical questions about the boundaries of technology, identity, and ethics. The theme of human-cyborg relationships offers insights into the potential future of technology in daily life.

2. Science Essays: Connecting Technology and Society: In addition to fiction, Udaan offers scientifically driven essays that cater to readers eager to learn about cutting-edge technology and societal impacts.

  • “Quantum Computing Technology” by Prof. Satbir Singh (India): This essay provides an accessible yet insightful explanation of quantum computing. Singh elaborates on how quantum computers differ from traditional systems and their potential applications in everyday life. Singh’s essay underlines the transformative power of this technology, from healthcare to data processing, making complex topics approachable to a broad audience.
  • “India’s Second Spaceport” by Dr. Surinder Kumar Jindal (India): Focusing on India’s burgeoning space exploration sector, Jindal discusses the construction of the country’s second spaceport, developed by a private company. His essay looks at India’s growing role in the global space race and the strategic importance of private sector involvement in this domain.
  • “Importance of Media Literacy in the Age of Social Media” by Amandeep Singh (USA): Amandeep Singh emphasizes the need for media literacy in an era where social media often shapes public opinion and knowledge. He discusses how misinformation can spread quickly and the critical role of media literacy in helping individuals navigate the digital age. Singh’s essay is timely, highlighting a crucial societal issue.

3. Children’s Section: Nurturing Science and Creativity: The third section of the magazine is geared towards children, combining imaginative stories with scientific themes to inspire young minds.

  • “The Falling of Old Leaves” by Amandeep Singh (USA): A simple yet beautiful story about leaves changing colours during the Fall season, aimed at introducing children to the cycle of seasons and the natural world.
  • “Harkho Cat and Hightech Mice” by Hari Krishan Mayer (Canada): In this clever story, a mice devise a high-tech plan to outsmart an intelligent cat. The story combines humour with ideas of innovation and teamwork, making it entertaining and educational for young readers.
  • “Dipi Get Rid of Ghosts” by Amarhit Singh Jheeta (India): Jheeta’s story dispels myths about ghosts, teaching children to question superstitions and approach the world with a scientific mindset.
  • “A Stroll on Venus” by Dr. Devinder Pal Singh (Canada): In this story, a child named Ruban explores Venus. Singh introduces readers to the planet’s unique features, combining a child’s sense of adventure with accurate planetary science.

Poetry Section:  In addition to the stories, the children’s section includes two poems, “Sun” and “Moon,” by Vikas Verma (India) and “Fax Machine” by Hari Krishan Mayer (Canada). The poems explore celestial bodies and technology, making abstract concepts more relatable for children.

4. Book Review Section: Highlighting Environmental Themes: The magazine also features a book review of We the Living Animals (Parts 1 and 2), written by Principal Hari Krishan Singh Mayer and reviewed by Dr. Devinder Pal Singh. The books describe various animals’ characteristics in poetic form and reflect on their current state, likely aiming to raise awareness about environmental and conservation issues.

5. Science and Science Fiction News: The final section of the magazine contains the latest developments in science and science fiction, providing readers with current news related to these fields. This portion of the magazine bridges fictional stories and real-world scientific advancements, keeping readers informed about the latest trends in technology and space exploration.

Conclusion: With its blend of science fiction stories, informative essays, and children’s literature, Udaan magazine offers an engaging platform for promoting science in the Punjabi language. The current issue’s stories are particularly notable for exploring futuristic themes, ethical dilemmas, and the intersection of science and society. Meanwhile, the children’s section nurtures curiosity and critical thinking, laying the groundwork for future generations to appreciate both science’s wonder and storytelling’s power.

Crown prosecutors still disclosing terabytes of information in Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case

Hardeep Singh Nijjar

By Asia Samachar | Canada |

The four men accused of assassinating Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on the grounds of his suburban Vancouver gurdwara last year remain a long way from having a trial date set for the alleged murder, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has linked to Indian government agents.

In a brief appearance at Surrey Provincial Court Tuesday, the judge heard that Crown prosecutors have only begun the painstaking work of vetting and handing over massive amounts of digital evidence to the lawyers for the four men, who are accused of ambushing and killing Nijjar on Father’s Day last year, reports The Globe and Mail.

The Indian government has been dragged into this high-profile murder of the Canadian Sikh in a case that has potentially huge ramifications on India.

Evidence is mounting that the Indian government is orchestrating a widespread, coordinated assassination campaign against Sikh activists on foreign soil. Human Rights Watch warns these latest developments suggest “a new and notorious leap in extrajudicial killings” by India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist government, which has labeled Nijjar and other Sikh activists as terrorists over their criticisms of the state and their advocacy for the creation of a separate Sikh state in Punjab, India, known as Khalistan, reported Analyst News.

Protest outside court on Oct 1, 2024 at the trial of four Indian nationals accused of assassinating Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar

In the Canadian case, The Globe and Mail reported Crown prosecutor Louise Kenworthy said she and her team are “not at a point where I could say substantive disclosure has been completed” – referencing the legal requirement for the Crown across Canada to hand over all material in their possession relating to a criminal investigation and their case unless it is “clearly irrelevant” or subject to a claim of privilege. The judge then granted her request to adjourn the proceedings until the middle of next month.

But, since the co-accused were arrested and charged in May, Moninder Singh, a close friend of the slain leader, said at least two more Sikh activists have been notified by their local Canadian police that their lives were in danger.

Outside the courthouse Tuesday, Mr. Singh, who has also been subject to one of these “duty to warn” notices from officers, told reporters that those others were in addition to the August warning given to Brampton, Ont.-based activist Inderjeet Singh Gosal, bringing the number of Sikh Canadian activists facing such danger to at least seven in recent years.

“Some are actually quiet about it. They’re not coming forward to say that they’ve been given a duty to warn for their own reasons, for their own safety and how they want to deal with it,” Mr. Singh was quoted by the report. “There’s just a couple that I’ve been made aware of and, for us, even one is too much at the end of the day.”

The four accused, all Indian citizens, are alleged to have plotted to kill Mr. Nijjar from as far away as Edmonton and then to have driven to Surrey, B.C., to shoot the Sikh leader in the parking lot of a temple, sparking an international furor, according to the report.

Mr. Nijjar’s death enraged the Sikh community in Canada, especially after Mr. Trudeau stood in the House of Commons last September and stated that Canada’s spy agency had found evidence linking India to the daylight slaying. Sikh activists had always maintained that India orchestrated his killing because of Mr. Nijjar’s leadership in promoting the creation of an independent Sikh state, called Khalistan, that would be carved out from the South Asian country.

The Indian government has dismissed Mr. Trudeau’s claims, and the resulting diplomatic crisis has affected everything from trade to tourism with the most populous country in the world, the report added.

SGPC backs Diljit Dosanjh’s biopic on human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra

Diljit Dosanjh (left) in Punjab ’95, a biopic on human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra (right)

By Mohar Basu | Mid-Day | India |

Support for Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjab ’95 comes from unexpected quarters, as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) backs Honey Trehan-directed biopic on human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra

With the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) coming down hard on Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjab ’95, there was bound to be pushback.

Earlier this week, mid-day reported that the CBFC had doled out nearly 120 changes to the Honey Trehan-directed biopic on human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Now, SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal has expressed his support for the film.

Grewal has objected to the CBFC’s recommendations, which range from rechristening the film, to Khalra’s character being renamed. When mid-day reached out to Grewal, he was surprised that a film on Khalra—who had played a critical role in investigating the disappearance and killing of Sikh youths during the Punjab insurgency between 1984 and 1994—would have such a hard time with the censor board.

“The job of the CBFC, in my understanding, is to eliminate anything that questions the country’s unity, that attacks faith or [incites] violence. We stand with the film. Jaswant Singh Khalra was a people’s man. He was beyond party lines. What would they get from removing his name from a film based on his work? Why should the title be changed? This is a part of Punjab’s history.”

Grewal is keen to see the biopic without the cuts. He lamented, “After 120 cuts, what will remain of the film?” To him, making changes to the biopic feels like an attempt to change Punjab’s history.

“Khalra became a key figure after the anti-Sikh riots and subsequent atrocities, which led him to advocate for the rights of those affected by police brutality. His investigations revealed that police death squads were operating in secrecy, abducting individuals, torturing them, and then cremating their bodies without proper identification. In Amritsar alone, he identified over 2,000 Sikh men who were unaccounted for. I know of people, who have received compensation from the court, because of his work.”

Grewal also opposed the idea of art being a product of the country’s ruling party.

“This film is important because it is about a people’s man. This is not The Kashmir Files [2022] or The Kerala Story [2023]. Did they suggest removing [Narendra] Modiji’s name from his biopic or [Vinayak Damodar] Savarkar’s name from his biopic? ”

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

A joyous three-day festivity came to its climax today (Sept 29) for the centennial celebration of Gurdwara Sahib Kota Kinabalu (GSKK).

GSKK, the only Sikh place of worship in the capital of the Malaysian region of Sabah, was established in 1924 and has served as the meeting point of the local Sikh community for religious and social gatherings.

Simon Sipaun, the former Sabah state secretary, was among the VIPs that joined the celebration. It also attracted members of the Sabah Indian Association and interfaith members of the Sabah Unity in Diversity Community (SUIDC).

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Sangat for your sewa, attendance, and contributions throughout the 3-day centenary celebration of Gurdwara Sahib Kota Kinabalu. The success of this momentous occasion was made possible by the collective effort, love, and devotion of each one of you. From the beautiful kirtan sessions to the langgar sewa, every moment was a reflection of our unity and commitment to the teachings of Guru Sahib,” according to a note shared on the gurdwara’s Facebook page.

Over the years, key members of the local Sikh community had also organised Sikh youth camps at the gurdwara as well other gurdwaras in Sabah.

The celebration began with a hi-tea on Friday (Sept 27) and a fireworks display in the evening. They also had religious programmes on all three days at a makeshift darbar sahib (prayer hall) as the main gurdwara building has been cordoned for renovation.
