Time to declare Jihad on criminal ‘Godmen’

A devotee supposedly kissing Rajinder Kalia’s feet. Left: Baba Balak Nath temple in Bell Green, Coventry

By Gurnam Singh | Opinion |

A cult leader who allegedly groomed and raped four female devotees over three decades has failed in an attempt to have this case thrown out. Rajinder Kalia, 65, has been accused at the High Court of exerting ‘undue influence’ on worshippers as young as four at the Baba Balak Nath temple in Bell Green, in Coventry, UK (see here).

Practising an obscure branch of Hinduism, Kalia allegedly indoctrinated his devotees to believe he was “an incarnation of God and or the divine” and to see him as “all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing”. He had also claimed “to be divine, to have a direct link to and regularly to speak with God or manifestations of God”. Kalia is also accused of instructing his followers to launch an ‘onslaught of harassment’ against any members of the temple who spoke out against him.

This is not the first, and certainly not the last cases of alleged abuse by a so called Godman. However, in the midst of this worrying by case, it is also right to celebrate the judgement made by the court. Why? Because such cases rarely reach the courts. But sadly this case is but the tip of a very big iceberg.

Tragically and shamefully, whilst some of our Gurdwaras, Temples, Mandhirs, Mosques, and Churches do some good work, some of the time, they have also become magnates for criminal ‘God men’, who prey on vulnerable and desperate people, especially women, children, and young people. Whilst most of the charlatans travel from overseas, mostly from India and Pakistan and the Arab countries, there is also a growing number of UK-born ‘God men’, both young and old.

Unless and until the various ‘places of worship’ are subjected to proper governance, i.e. that they are controlled by the congregation through some form of democratic and legal accountability, I am afraid these kinds of cases are likely to increase.

Temples, like the one in this case in Coventry, from the outside, with their beautiful domes and lights, appear to be the closest one might get to heaven in Earth, but in many cases the decoration, ritual, pomp and ceremony is a clever ploy to cover up horrendous practices.

SEE ALSO: Yogi Bhajan’s fall from grace. The ‘sexual abuse’ is just the just beginning

In such case, because of the utter embarrassment and shame that the victims feel, more often than not the abusers get away without facing any justice. But in some senses we, the silent majority of ‘good people’, are also culpable in our failure to speak out against against such abuse and confront the abusers, who operate freely amongst the community.

Though they can come in all shapes, sizes and guises, often fake Godman are adorned with all kinds of religious attire. Whatever their appearance, one should never never accept or trust a ‘Godman’, especially a stranger until and unless you are certain of their intentions and credentials.

In any other walk of life, whether it is arranging child care, or even buying a house, we first establish the credential of those we are dealing with and we will often consult lawyers and other agencies. But when it comes to religion, somehow we feel it is wrong to ask question, to doubt and be cautious. It is as if we have become conditioned to give blind respect to those who claim that God is on their side!! What a perfect opportunity for a budding rapist, simply present yourself as a man of God, invest in some fancy attire, and the doors will be wide open!

So my advise to anybody that is prepared to listen is simple, treat any person who claims to be able to reach into your soul and/or to perform miracle acts as a charlatan and potential abuser. And for certain DO NOT allow yourself to be with them in a private setting for obvious reasons; this is where they almost always make their move and do their dirty work.

SEE ALSO: Lessons from fall of rockstar evangelists Ravi Zacharias and Yogi Bhajan – Part 1

And for those who sadly fall prey to these evil ’Godmen’, you should try to build up your evidence and not hesitate to involve the law enforcement agencies. But I would definitely warn against approaching so called ‘community leaders’ and committee members, that is unless they have a good track record in such cases. Why? Because often the community leaders may be afraid of the consequences and/or vested interests, which can range from family aend community ‘obligations’ to financial interests. And one should not discount the possibility that they may well be directly involved in such abuse rings.

Ultimately the challenge is for us all, which means we need to be proactive, and especially we need to educate and empower women and children in particular to both recognise and resist the men. But, because these evil doers are almost always men, we men must accept our collective complicity in allowing what is essentially misogyny (hatred of women) and systemic abuse to become normalised. And that means speaking up and speaking out! We need to declare war, ‘dharma judh’, jihad’ or whatever else one chooses to call against these Godmen.

1897: Sikhs barred from some Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee events. But why?

    21.6. 1897.

Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in Penang.

While the prayer was going on natives gathered at the Esplanade for the sports. The sports began at ten a’clock. It is interesting to note that in Event No.1. Putting the shot, where Sikhs were barred, was won by a throw of 27 feet 3 inches, whereas in event No 6 . Putting the shot, confined only to Sikhs was won with 33 feet. In Event No. 8 Boxing the Sikhs were barred, but Event No.9 Wrestling was for Sikhs only! The Sikhs were also barred form Event No. 12, Tug-of-War.

    21.6. 1897.

One of the highlights of the Jubilee sports held in Fort Cornwallis, Penang was the Sikh wrestling. The two prizes went to Lal Singh and Bisup Singh. An eye-witness record mentions: “Although not one of the six competitors gave any evidence of having been trained as a wrestler still the competition was interesting and the spectators were certainly pleased with what they saw. The final tie was a long one and almost dramatic in its climax, when the short thick-set winner seized his tall antagonist and, gradually raising him aloft, reversed his position as he did so, until he held the man head downwards and signified a wish to deposit his burden on the grass wherever the judges might desire.”

    22.6.1897.

Subedar-Major Bhola Singh commanded the Malay States Guides detachment which representated the Federated Malay States at the Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Victoria in London. The M.S.G. detachment was made up of all Sikhs and besides the Subedar-Major included two sergeants, two corporals and nineteen privates. These handsome Sikhs created an excellent impression in England and their uniform became the subject of much comment. The Commandant of the M.S.C.., Colonel R.S. Frowd Walker was given the command of all the Colonial foot detachments and was latter honoured by the Queen who graciously granted an audience at Buckingham Palace.

A 1960 air-cooled Citroen car stood out at a Father’s Day vintage vehicles gathering in Petaling Jaya on Sunday (June 19).

Amir Singh Boparai, owner of the Citroen, was one of vintage vehicle enthusiasts who came, some with family members in tow, to Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya to join the retro vehicles meet.

The front-wheel-drive Citroën – designed as an economy family car and introduced at the 1948 Paris auto show – was at full display along with an assortment of other classic cars, bikes and bicycles.

“Someone even brought the postman’s bicycle. For an event planned at the last minute, we were delighted with the participation,” Jay Lakhbir Singh, an event organiser who spearheaded the get together, told Asia Samachar.

Also on display was a 1958 Royal Enfield 500 motorcycle, owned by Kuala Lumpur businessman Darshen Singh.

“The Royal Enfield belonged to my father and I have maintained and kept it as part of my family’s legacy. My son [Tarendev Singh] is also keen on vintage motorcycles and I decided to get him the Norton five years ago,” he was quoted in a local newspaper report.

On his part, Jay Lakhbir brought a 1976 air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. “It was an abandoned car. I bought it in 2021 and restored it to mint condition,” he said.

Sikh organisations condemn ‘insane and barbaric’ Kabul gurdwara attack

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

Two Malaysian-based Sikh organisations have condemned the ‘insane and barbaric attack’ on the Gurdwara Sahib Karte Parwan in Kabul, Afghanistan on June 18.

In a joint statement, Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) and Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) called on the Afghanistan authorities to punish those involved in the ‘heinous act’.

“All people of the world should condemn this heinous attack on unarmed and peaceful worshippers in the Gurdwara Sahib,” they said in the joint statement emailed to Asia Samachar.

An Islamic State affiliate has claimed responsibility for the attack that killed at least two people and injured seven. ISIS-Khorasan said on its Telegram channel that it was “an act of revenge” following insults made by members of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) about the Prophet Mohammed.

Nupur Sharma, a spokesperson for the party, had made derogatory remarks regarding the Prophet Mohammed during a panel discussion on a news channel and her comments were allegedly followed by anti-Islam comments by another party leader on Twitter, according to media rpeorts.

Kabul police officials said seven gunmen had tried to storm the temple in the early hours of Saturday morning and all were killed after a standoff that lasted several hours. A gurdwara official said 30 people were inside the SIkh centre at the time of the incident.

ISIS-K said in its Telegram post that its suicide bomber Abu Muhammad al-Tajik had gained entry to the temple by throwing a hand grenade at the security guard officer at the entrance, killing him, reported CNN. “Armed with a rifle, pistol and hand grenades, he proceeded to shoot,” the worshippers inside the temple, ISIS-K said.

In the 1930s there were more than 300,000 Sikhs staying in Afghanistan. By the time of the March 2020 attack when 25 Sikh worshippers were killed in Gurdwara, only about 450 Sikhs remained in Afghanistan. The rest had migrated out due to constant killings, harassment and violence against the minority Sikhs, the joint statement said.

“We also pray for the safety of the remaining Sikhs whose lives are constantly in danger,” the statement added.

Teaching legend Durbara Singh: Founder founding headmaster of Sultan Ismail Primary School

Headmaster Durbara Singh (seated centre, in lounge suit and turban) with his fellow teachers at the Sultan Ismail Primary School in Kota Baru, Kelantan in 1961 – Photo: Courtesy of family

By Adrian David | New Straits Times | Malaysia |

During the Japanese Occupation, Durbara Singh sold ice to the coffee shops in Jalan Penang on the island city. He later became the founding headmaster at Sultan Ismail Primary School in Kota Baru, Kelantan in 1956 for 14 years.

More strikingly Durbara, who died in 2003, carved a niche not only for himself as a national tennis official, but also groomed five of his seven children – sons Jaswant Singh, Lt Col (Rtd) Charanjit Singh, Kuldip Singh and retired police deputy superintendent Suvinder Singh, and daughter Hermeet Kaur – to each win a national junior tennis title.

They also represented Kelantan, Penang, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Armed Forces and the police in tennis during their younger years. Four of them – Charanjit, Kuldip, Suvinder and Hermeet – went on to represent the country.

Durbara’s other children are daughters Inderjit Kaur and Harjit Kaur.

Recounting his father’s earlier days, former teacher and tennis coach Kuldip, 67, told the New Straits Times of interesting episodes in Durbara’s life.

“The World War II survivor grew up sharing his younger days in Georgetown, Penang with a Japanese boy who became his best friend.

“However, just before the war broke out, my father’s friend ‘disappeared’, only to resurface as a Japanese Imperial Army officer when Malaya was invaded and occupied. My father was so shocked of an encounter with his Japanese friend, who gave him a salute and introduced himself very sternly.

“Father never saw his friend again but realised that the Japanese soldiers were kinder to him, owing to the bondage they shared when young,” said Kuldip in conjunction with Father’s Day, at his home in Ara Damansara, Selangor.

Kuldip said after the war ended in 1945, Durbara did temporary jobs with the British Administration until he became a teacher in 1951 in Kota Baru.

“He was earlier doing odd jobs after finishing his Senior Cambridge at St Xavier’s Institution, Penang in 1937, before the war interrupted his life,” said Kuldip.

In 2004, Durbara was posthumously awarded by the National Sports Council for ‘excellence services rendered in tennis’ – the first official to be recognised in the sport.

Kuldip was a national Under-15 and Under-18 singles and doubles champion in 1970 and 1973, respectively, and represented Malaysia in the England Junior Circuit in 1972. Later on, he was national singles runner-up in 1979 and national doubles champion in 1979, 1980 and 1981. Kuldip has represented Malaysia in tennis from 1971 to 1981, including the 1981 Sea Games.

Guru Arjan’s martyrdom: Actual cause & lessons

    0
    Emperor Jahangir

By Asia Samachar | Faith |

Guru Arjan is the first of two Sikh Gurus sacrificed their lives for something larger than themselves. Some of often reasons given for the martyrdom is being questioned by today’s youth. So, what was the driving factor behind the great martyrdom?

The compilation of ‘spiritual messages’ into the Pothi Sahib (precursor to the Guru Granth Sahib) was a major impetus that led to the eventual martyrdom of the fifth Sikh Guru.

Did you know that the Mughal emperor Jahangir – a fanatical and intolerant religious zealot – ordered that composition of his choosing be added to the Pothi Sahib?

“Guru Arjan refused on grounds that the sacro-sanctity of Gurbani and the compositions of the 34 divine beings and Pothi Sahib could not be violated,” Karminder Singh Dhillon argued in a message from Global Sikh Council (GSC) in conjunction with the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan.

“Jahangir brought the weight of his empire to bear in Guru Arjan Ji in the form of unspeakable tortures.”

    Lessons for Sikhs and humanity:

    1. Freedom of beliefs and the freedom to practice those beliefs
    2. Love for humanity in wanting to give us the divine experiences of 34 divine beings in an unadulterated and untainted form.
    3. To allow Sikhs, in particular, and humanity, in general, to have access to divinity within the Pothi Sahib for time immemorial.
