An all-rounder Sikh student pursuing dentistry emerged as the golden girl at the convocation of a Malaysian-based private medical university.

Tripthpal Kaur, who studied Doctor of Dental Surgery at Mahsa University, was presented the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award at the university’s convocation on Sunday (June 12).

Why dentistry? “I’ve always wanted to be in the medical line. I found learning about the human body to be very interesting and intriguing. So I narrowed it down to dentistry because there are plenty opportunities in this field and a work-life balance,” she tells Asia Samachar.

She studied at the Kuala Lumpur-based Sri Dasmesh International School before pursuing A Levels at the Sunway College. She was awarded a JPA scholarship to complete her degree program.

Asked her secret to studying, she said: “Feed your mind with knowledge and exercise the body. In everything that you do, academics or otherwise, always give your 100% and with Waheguru’s grace, you will achieve great heights.”

She has also been active in sports at the community and university level. She also dabbles in golf and does kirtan in her past time.

Her father Jasmindar Singh is a retired banker while her mother Karamjit Kaur is a senior manager at an international logistic firm. Tripthpal has two elder siblings – Dr. Harsimran Kaur who is attached to the government service and certified internal auditor Manvinder Kaur.

Upon completion of the dentistry programme, students will have procured for themselves the ability to carry out various dental tasks, from basic dental procedures such as tooth extraction and repair of oral imperfections to complex and complicated procedures such as root canal and prosthodontics treatment, according to information at Mahsa’s website.

The modules taught in this degree programme are an integration of biomedical, clinical, and behavioral sciences, with particular emphasis on human anatomy, craniofacial biology, physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology. Apart from that, the study of pathology, pharmacology, human organ systems, associated disease processes, emergency procedures, infection control, oral health diseases, biomaterials, operative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral surgery, public health and community dentistry make up a large portion of the syllabus, it added.

India presidential election: Who will occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan?

Indian president Ram Nath Kovind receiving a visit by newly minted Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann in April 2022

By Prabhjot Paul Singh | Punjab Politics |

In less than two months, India will decide on its new President. Who will succeed the incumbent Ram Nath Kovind is a question that may not be very difficult to answer. The reason: the electoral college, as it stands, is structured on the basis of strengths of different political parties, both in Parliament and state assemblies. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is at a slight advantage.

President Ram Nath Kovind’s term will end on July 24. The Constitution requires that the process to elect his successor has to be completed before the completion of his term.

The Election Commission that oversees the conduct of the Presidential election has already set in motion the process by announcing the schedule.

The electoral college for the presidential elections comprises 4,809 members, that includes 233 Rajya Sabha and 543 Lok Sabha members, and 4,033 MLAs of State Assemblies.

Each member has a certain vote value based on the strength of the population he or she represents.

According to the schedule, voting will be held on July 18. The total value of the votes that will be up for grabs is: 10,86,431.

The BJP-led NDA, based on its present strengths, has 5,25,706 votes, around 20,000 votes short of the majority mark.

Though there are efforts to bring all Opposition parties together for the Presidential elections but ideological differences may still keep them fragmented.

Who all are in the run for the Presidential election? Both the ruling and the opposition parties will formally start holding parleys soon to deliberate upon possible and commonly accepted choices for both President and Vice-President offices.

As of now, the possibility of the BJP-led NDP nominee occupying the Rashtrapati Bhavan looks strong.

Of the State parties, both the Biju Janata Dal with 31,686 votes and the YSR Congress with 43,450 votes have conveyed to the BJP-led NDA government their wholehearted support. The Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, on May 30, and YSR Congress chief and Andhra Pradesh CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, on June 2, met the PM, reportedly committing their votes to the BJP’s choice for the highest office.

BJP president J.P. Nadda and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have been authorised to hold consultations with the NDA partners, UPA constituents and Independent MPs regarding the Presidential election.

On the other hand, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon leaders of all other political parties and Chief Ministers for an Opposition meeting at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on June 15. The agenda of the meeting is to put up a common nominee from the Opposition for the highest office. Even the Congress President Sonia Gandhi, now convalescing at a Delhi hospital after being diagnosed positive for Covid-19, has been getting in touch with leaders of other political parties, including NCP leader Sharad Pawar over the same issue.

Though the outcome of the Presidential election is more or less predictable, the contest will still be closely watched and monitored. Not only within the country, but all over the globe. India is still rated as one of the fastest growing economy and a new power on the world horizon. Its stand on the Russia-Ukraine war has given its own global identity.

The Presidential election will have many layers of political meaning and symbolism, as the new President will assume office at a time when the country is faced with a crippling religious polarisation and other challenges.

Incidentally, it will be the second successive presidential election to be held without J&K’s legislators. J&K had lost the status of a State as it became a UT in 2019.

In the last election, the BJP played the trump card of fielding a Dalit for the top post. What card it plays this time remains to be seen. Like last election, the election strategy of the BJP for the 2024 general elections will more or less get reflected in the choice of its candidates, both for President and Vice-President, for the ensuing polls. Will it be projecting Presidential candidate from one of the minorities to reiterate the party’s endeavour to build its secular image or something else?

While the action of the Narendra Modi government will be watched with bated breath, it will also be a litmus test for the Opposition parties. Will they be able to put up a united show? is a million rupee question.

Both Congress and AAP are ruling in two States each. The Congress, however, has the highest number of votes among the non-BJP parties. The possibility of a Congress sponsored candidate getting approval of the Opposition looks remote.

The TRS chief and Telangana CM, K. Chandrashekar Rao, and the TMC leader and West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee, want to lead the Opposition coalition. They both may be unwilling to concede the leadership to the Congress. Till now, they have not taken any public stand but going by their immediate past relations with Congress, their choice may fall elsewhere.

Same is the case with the Aam Aadmi Party. The AAP convener and the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Now working hard to get a foothold in both Haryana and Himachal Pradesh , has been relentless not only in his attacks on the BJP, but is strongly opposed to the Congress.

Also the stand of Shiromani Akali Dal will be watched with tremendous interest. The party has been decimated to side-lines and is presently in alliance with Bahujan Samaj Party. Will it go be what Mayawati decides or take its own stance in the July 18 polls?

Considering these divergent views and conflicting ambitions, it will be a tall order for the Opposition to devise a united front and coherent strategy. All told, the presidential election will be a demonstration of how political forces are aligned and its outcome determining the political future of the country.

Army veteran Inderraj breaks British deadlift record

By Asia Samachar | Britain |

Inderraj Singh has broken a powerlifting record at the recent All England Championships 2022.

The 31-year-old broke the British record deadlift at 375kg in the U120kg class at the event held in Manchester.

The Bristol based army veteran went from serious injury to international champion, taking home gold at an international powerlifting meet in Canada in 2019, despite only taking up the sport to help rehabilitate muscle problems in his back, reported Repel Bullies.

He started powerlifting for rehabilitation after injuring his back during his six years of British Army service in electronic warfare and signalling with the Royal Corps of Signals. During the first 6 to 8 months post-injury, he was unable to run or even walk for long periods, the report added.

A powerlifting competition consists of three core lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift (performed in that order). Using proper form, each athlete has three attempts (at each exercise) to lift as much weight as possible for one repetition, according to ISSA Online.

All competitors are divided into categories based on their age, gender, and body weight. The winner of a category is the lifter with the highest total weight (sum of the best of each of the three lifts) with any ties going to the competitor with the lower body weight.

In deadlift, the competitor will face the front of the platform. In one complete upward motion, the athlete will lift until the shoulders, knees, and hips are locked in a standing position. Once the bar is still, the referee will signal for the athlete to lower the barbell down to the ground.

Singapore Sikh active reservist officer enjoying connect

By Jagpreet Singh | Experience | Singapore |

On 3rd of June (Friday), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) held the Police Day Parade 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Police Day has been commemorated annually on 3 June since 1971. 3 June 1959 is a date of special significance, as it is the day that Singapore obtained self-government and SPF first became accountable to the people of Singapore as the law enforcement agency of an elected Government.

In my capacity as an active reservist officer, it was an honor to be invited back to join the Police Day parade celebrations at the Home Team Academy. I had a marvelous time connecting back with senior peers, friends and fellow officers from the force and am extremely thankful for their hardwork and sacrifices in keeping our nation safe.

(The article is adapted from Jagpreet Singh’s entry at his LinkedIn page. Jagpreet, who has a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management and Services from Curtin Singapore, is a risk prevention specialist at Meta. He has served as a National Service Police Inspector from 2014 to 2016)
