By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

The weekend classes under the banner of Punjabi Education Centres (PECs) began in most places yesterday (8 Jan). Finally, students and teachers were able to meet up face-to-face. Since March 2020, most of the classes had gone online due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

PEC Subang began its classes today (9 Jan). The classes are held at Gurdwara Sahib Subang Jaya.

The PECs are managed by the Punjabi Education Trust Malaysia (PETM), the Punjabi language education wing of Ipoh-based Khalsa Diwan Malaysia (KDM).

This will be the 22nd year of a planned and organised approach to Punjabi education in Malaysia, since its revival in 2000.

In 2020, KDM conducted Punjabi Language classes in more than 40 active PECs nationwide, including Sabah and Sarawak, with a student population of more than 2000 who were taught by almost 250 teachers.

For the 2020 SPM examination, the Punjabi Language paper once again recorded an excellent performance. A total of 40 students sat for the Punjabi Language paper in 2020, in which all but one passed recording a 97.5% pass rate. The number of students who obtained A+, A and A- was 26, which makes up 65% of the students.

The results of the Punjabi Language paper are better, both in terms of quality and quantity, compared to the results of other languages tested in the SPM examination.

In 2019, 56 students sat for the Punjabi Language paper. The pass rate was 100% with 75% of the students scoring A+, A or A-.

EU ambassadors join Petaling Jaya gurdwara flood relief ops

By Asia Samachar Team | Malaysia |

The massive flood relief aid operation at the Petaling Jaya gurdwara is still going strong, with the European Union (EU) ambassadors and staff joining them personally on Wednesday (5 Jan).

Staff members of the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia and several EU member states participated in a volunteer service at the Gurdwara Sahib in Petaling Jaya (GSPJ) which began soon after a massive flash flood hit the Klang Valley.

EU Ambassador to Malaysia Michalis Rokas, German Ambassador Dr. Peter Blomeyer and Crotia Ambassador Dr. Ivan Velimir Starčević joined staff members of the delegation and of other EU member states embassies to assist the packing and sorting of food and necessities that will be distributed to flood victims.

In a news update shared at the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia website, Rokas said that “it is a small token from the European Union Member States and Embassies in Malaysia, to show solidarity and bring relief to affected Malaysians. I would like to thank and commend Gurdwara Sahib for their tireless work coordinating the flood relief aid.”

GSPJ started preparing thousands of packets of hot vegetarian meals on 19 Dec 2021, just a day after a massive flash flood had hit Klang Valley and a number of other spots in Malaysia. The effort snowballed into a full scale relief aid operation when they began collecting desperately needed items like food and clothes, and activated a control room to distribute them directly to the affected areas.

As an initial reaction, the EU Delegation staff had pooled their personal resources to provide relief aid in the Hulu Langat district, a badly affected area where one of its staff members resides. It added that the donation to the GSPJ was a personal effort by the EU Delegation and the EU Member States embassies.

“In a Team Europe effort, we have pooled own resources as a gesture of solidarity with Malaysians,” it added.

At the Petaling Jaya gurdwara compound, volunteers packing necessary items that will be sent out direct flood affected areas around the Peninsular Malaysia. More than 40 SUV and truck drivers have volunteered to do the deliveries.

Yesterday, GSPJ had send out essential items to Malacca and Klang. The day before, six SUVs left for Jeli, Kelantan.

The Sikhs in Singapore were historically linked to work related to security as they were first brought in to Singapore as policeman. The Sikh Police Contingent (SPC) was established in Singapore in 1881 and were often deployed by the British to different Malay states to help revolts. In Singapore, the Sikhs were hired by the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company for its Dock Police Force. In the 1930s, a Sikh police was also formed at the Sembawang naval base and the Royal Air Force base in Seletar.

Sikh army officer conquers South Pole, makes history for woman of colour

Preet Chandi on solo adventure to South Pole

By Asia Samachar | Britain |

British-born Sikh army officer Preet Chandi has become the first woman of color to complete a solo expedition to the South Pole when she completed a solo 700-mile trek in 40 days.

“Hello everyone, checking in from day 40. I made it to the South Pole where it’s snowing. Feeling so many emotions right now,” she said in a blog entry yesterday (3 Jan 2021).

The 32-year-old physiotherapist at the British Army landed in Antartica on 24 Nov 2021 for the unsupported expedition to the South Pole. The expedition began on Nov 7 when she flew to Chile before embarking from Antarctica’s Hercules Inlet.

The journey saw her pulling a pulk (sledge) with all of her kit, battling temperatures of up to -50c and wind speeds of up to 60mph. Go to her blog for the captured live tracking and click on the map to hear her daily voice blogs.

“This expedition was always about so much more than me. I want to encourage people to push their boundaries and to believe in themselves, and I want you to be able to do it without being labelled a rebel.

“I have been told no on many occasions and told to “just do the normal thing”, but we create our own normal. You are capable of anything you want. No-matter where you are from or where your start line is, everybody starts somewhere. I don’t want to just break the glass ceiling, I want to smash it into a million pieces,” she added in the blog entry.

Preet, who adopted the nickname “Polar Preet” for her blog and fundraising efforts, spent two and a half years preparing for the grueling expedition.

She had always had an interest and passion in sports and exercise medicine from a young age, which stems from playing tennis full time as a junior at an academy in the Czech Republic.

“This motivated me to join the world of physiotherapy. My time in the Army has provided me with invaluable skills in leadership and management in a variety of different settings including austere environments,” she said.

Her thirst for experiences and striving for excellence was reflected in her active pursuit of opportunities to travel and assist in deployments. During her time in the Army, she said he had worked in Cyprus, Kenya, Norway, Nepal, South Sudan and various locations within the UK.
