Dr. Kiranjit Kaur has been appointed as a full professor by the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), a Malaysian public university.
She was appointed as Professor in Public Relations at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies in February 2015.
Dr Kiranjit’s areas of expertise are in public relations management, media ethics, and women and media.
On the Sikh-related front, she is a founding member of the Sikh Women’s Awareness Network (SWAN), a Malaysian-based Sikh women organisation, where she served as the auditor from 2004-2011.
She has also written two chapters on ‘Sikh Women and Leadership in Malaysian Sikh Based Institutions’, and ‘Who are the Sikhs? Perception of Sikhs in Malaysia through a Malaysian Cartoonist’s Lens’, which were published in the book on Sikhs in Multicultural Southeast Asia- Negotiating an Identity published by ISEAS, Singapore in 2011.
Dr Kiranjit holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the College Of Journalism, University Of Maryland, US (1997) and a Masters in Science (Public Relations) from Boston University, US (1984).
She obtained the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), (Humanities; Major: Mass Communication; Minor: Sociology) from University of Science Malaysia, Penang (1982).
She has been involved in various research and consultancy projects over her 28 year-academic career and has published several journal articles and book chapters.
Besides her academic and research work, Kiranjit is active in professional and civic groups.
She is a Fellow and Accredited member of IPRM and serves on the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) Council.
She is also on the Board of Council members of the industry-based Communications and Multimedia Content Forum (CMCF), and chairs the Media Commission of the National Council of Women’s Organisations, Malaysia (NCWO).
