Singapore lets me keep the bits of India I want

“My name is AtmaRam Singh. Actually I don’t need to work. My kids keep asking me to retire. But driving cab is a good way to spend time. My favourite thing is when I drive around tourists. They always love to talk about how pretty Singapore is and how clean it is here. I like that. I was born in India and after independence for some reason my family moved to Singapore. I’ve grown up here and I love this country. Why? Because it lets me keep the bits of India I want. I belong here. It’s the best place in the world. Don’t you think so?”

This is the 13 short sentences entry by AtmaRam found on the Humans of Singapore Facebook page.

One comment described his words about Singapore allowing him to ‘keep the bits of India’ that he wants as ‘poignant’. How true.

Humans of Singapore, a project that began in 2013 to document the stories of the people of Singapore, was inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York (HONY).
