Pakir Singh, the father of Singapore’s hospitality training and the most instrumental person in the founding of Singapore’s first hospitality school, passed away on July 1.
He stayed on as the CEO of Singapore Hotel And Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC) from 1979 to 2005.
Pakir Singh was also the CEO of the Singapore Hotel Association and also the Secretary-General of the Asean Tourism Association (ASEANTA) until 2000.
He saw the need for Singapore to have its own world-class institution to groom and train future local leaders for the hotel industry, wrote a travel editor in Travel Weekly Asia.
He was committed to that purpose and he saw the potential for Singapore to take the lead in hospitality training in Asean.
“There was an urgent need in the 1980s for Singapore to develop skilled manpower for the hotel trade and industry. Singapore needed workers for the many hotels that were being built and I wanted to help solve the problem,” Pakir said in an interview published in 1983-2013: Developing Hospitality Talent, a book to commemorate 30 years of SHATEC.
