Pritam Singh from the Workers’ Party (WP) will be the sole Member of Parliament (MP) hailing from the Sikh community as the full results of the 2015 general election unfold.

The other three Sikh contenders in Singapore’s 2015 polls – all from the Opposition parties, as well – failed to make the cut as the results of the polls were announced early morning today (Sept 12).

Ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Lee Hsien Loong went on to a landslide victory, winning 83 out of the 89 seats contested and increasing its popular vote to 69.9%, up from an all-time low of 60% in the 2011 polls.

This time around, there will be no turban-sporting Sikh when the republic’s parliament sits next. In the last Parliament, Inderjit Singh from the PAP was the sole turban-bearing MP from the Sikh fold. He had decided to quit the race after serving for four consecutive terms.

Harminder Pal Singh, the chief media officer from the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), would have been the sole turban-bearing MP had he won a ticket in his second attempt at the race. The other Sikh candidates were Gurmit Singh (WP) and  Sukdeu Singh from Singaporeans First (SingFirst).
