Former Singapore national football coach Jita Singh is leaving his job as technical advisor at Pahang-based Frenz United Football Academy (FUFA), an ambitious centre founded by a Singaporean that is set to cease operations by the end of this year.

Jita said he’s returning home, adding that he hopes to “contribute to Singapore football in one way or another”, reports Singapore’s Channel News Asia (CNA).

He played for the Lions in 1968 and went on to become Singapore’s national coach from 1979 to 1984. One of his biggest achievements was leading the Lions to Malaysia Cup victory in 1980.

“I think I’m the only one from the class of ’68 who is still active, so I would like to give back to Singapore football,” the report quoted Jita, who also led a Singapore side featuring Fandi Ahmad and V Sundramoorthy to a Southeast Asian Games silver medal in 1983.

“I’m keeping my options open, but I hope to be able to contribute to Singapore football in one way or another with my experience and knowledge.”

Jita, 67, left his post as the Football Association of Singapore’s senior head of game development – a role that sees him overseeing coaches’ education, junior Centres of Excellence and women’s football, among others – to join FUFA in 2014.

FUFA was launched in 2012 by Singaporean businessman Rashid Maidin and counted former Lions Hafizat Jauharmi and Effendy Sabtu among its academy coaches, the report added.
