The Selangor state government is looking into the request by Selayang Sikh community to move their gurdwara to a more suitable location.

The community received some positive wibes when Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali, who leads the state government, visited the its gurdwara for a Vaisakhi function last week.

“On behalf of the Selangor State Government I have taken note of the desire expressed by Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru chairman Gurmeet Singh for a suitable location for the Sikh community to establish a new Gurdwara,” he said in an update on his official Facebook page after the event on 13 April 2017.

Gurmeet is equally hopeful that the state government will respond to the request of the local Sikh community. “We are hopeful,” he tells Asia Samachar.

In his Facebook posting post visit, Azmin writes:

Thank you to the Sikh community of Batu Caves and Gombak for hosting me at your Vaisakhi open house last night.

On behalf of the Selangor State Government I have taken note of the desire expressed by Gurdwara Sahib Selayang Baru chairman Gurmeet Singh for a suitable location for the Sikh community to establish a new Gurdwara.

I shall discuss these matters with the Gombak District Officer.

While Islam is the official religion of our Federation, the right of non-Muslims to worship is enshrined in our Constitution.

Selangor is defined by its unique multi-religious and multi-ethnic character. All communities are treated fairly in spiritual and socio-cultural matters.

In our Budget 2017, for the first time, we allocated RM500,000 for the Sikh community in Selangor for the purposes of upgrading places of worship and for religious programs.

I wish you once again, Happy Vaisakhi!
