Ludhiana girl Mandeep Kaur Sandhu defeated an Irish champ Niamh Earley to take the gold in the 52kg junior final on Saturday at the AIBA World Youth and Junior Championships in Taipei, Taiwan.
Mandeep won on a unanimous verdict over three, two minute rounds, according to a news on the International Boxing Association (AIBA) website.
Earley took the fight to Mandeep from the opening to the closing bell. The Indian fly was on the floor inside the opening few seconds, but that was ruled a push or a slip, as Earlier started at a high tempo and continued in a similar vein throughout the three rounds.
Mandeep, a neat counter puncher, took the first and seconds frames. The second was almost a replica of the first; Earley pressing forward, Mandeep back pedalling, the report said.
The Taipei finals had the Sher-e-Punjab Sports Academy all excited. It was here that Mandeep first had her taste of boxing.
“We have a plenty of international titles, but a world championship is like an Olympic medal to us,” academy president Balwant Singh told Hindustan Times. “The girl’s indomitable spirit took her to victory. She started boxing in 2008 and since 2011 is getting us medals regularly.”
Her father, Jagdev Singh, is a farmer; and her elder brother, Jagwinder Singh, is a state-level boxer, the same report added.
