India went through some anxious dying moments before eking out a close 5-4 win over hosts Malaysia and register their second consecutive win of the eighth junior men’s Asia Cup hockey tournament, here on 15 Nov (Sunday).

With this win India rises to the top of the table in Pool A with two straight wins and will play China in their last encounter of the group stage on Tuesday (17 Nov).

“It was a very good effort by the team. The boys showed impeccable attacking ability by putting five goals past the opponents. The defence was tested to such an extent for the first time in the tournament and it was a narrow escape. We will take positives out of the game and work hard on deriving a balance between attack and defence,” Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted Indian junior hockey team coach Harendra Singh.

Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh scored two goals each, with Gurjant Singh netting the other goal.

The Malaysian national juniors started on an impressive note when they beat China 4-0 in Group A of the Junior Asia Cup in Kuantan Saturday, while India had beaten Japan 2-1.
