India’s hopes of reaching the semifinals of the men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 suffered a major setback after a 1-3 defeat to hosts the Netherlands in their opening Phase 2 match at Wagener Stadium.
The Dutch completed a double over India after their women’s team had earlier beaten India 2-0 in Phase 2. For the men, defensive lapses proved costly despite India matching the hosts for long periods.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored India’s only goal from a penalty corner.
Both teams began aggressively, building attacks down the flanks and using aerial balls to stretch the opposition. The Netherlands earned the first penalty corner in the 13th minute but failed to convert, and an evenly contested first half ended goalless.
India had a promising opening in the 24th minute but failed to capitalise. Their first penalty corner came in the 35th minute, followed by another after a video referral, but neither produced a goal.
The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp put the Netherlands ahead.
India responded immediately and won another penalty corner, but the opportunity was wasted. The Dutch carried their 1-0 advantage into the final quarter.
India continued pressing and earned further penalty corners, but the Netherlands doubled their lead when Tjep Hoedemakers deflected a cross from the right past the goalkeeper.
India pulled one back in the 51st minute. After successive penalty corners, Harmanpreet made no mistake with his drag-flick to reduce the deficit to 1-2.
Any hopes of a comeback, however, were extinguished by another defensive error. Thijs van Dam capitalised, lifting the ball over the advancing Indian goalkeeper before tapping it into an empty goal for 3-1.
The defeat left India dependent on a difficult combination of results to stay in semifinal contention. Much hinged on the Argentina-England match that followed. India would also need a big win over Argentina in their final match, coupled with a favourable result when the Netherlands face England.
For India, it was a particularly frustrating defeat after an otherwise competitive display before a packed stadium, with defensive errors ultimately deciding the contest.
India’s men have had a mixed FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign. They beat Wales 3-1, lost 2-4 to England and defeated Pakistan 5-3 to finish second in their pool and advance to the second phase. India have shown attacking strength, particularly from penalty corners, but defensive lapses and inconsistency against stronger teams have hurt their campaign.
Their semifinal hopes suffered a major setback after a 1-3 loss to the Netherlands. India next face Argentina on August 24, with their semifinal prospects now heavily dependent on both that result and developments elsewhere in Pool E.
