The only gurdwara in Bentong, a town in the state of Pahang about 80km from Kuala Lumpur, will receive RM100,000 in donations for its on-going renovation.

Liow Tiong Lai, a local parliamentarian and a senior Malaysian Cabinet minister, made the pledge when he visited Gurdwara Sahib Bentong (GSB) on Saturday (15 April 2017) for a Vaisakhi celebration.

“The funds will go towards the renovation of the Langgar hall,” GSB management committee president Jesvir Singh tells Asia Samachar in a telephone conversation.

It is understood that the funds will come from the government.

Liow is the Minister of Transport and also president of Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), the second largest political party in the ruling coalition of Barisan Nasional. He has been visiting the gurdwara almost every Vaiskahi every since becoming an MP for the area.

Also present at the event were officials from the Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) led by its president Jagir Singh.

  1. This is the reality of Malaysian politics. Grants from the tax-payers money is the sole discretion of the “Government of the day”. I do not know about other countries. Gurdwaras in Malaysia (irrespective of the Sanggat’s political leanings) must approach the Government for grants. And please do it at least a year in advance so that that grant can be “factored” into the in-coming budget. It saves alot of our time (running around), compared to if we make a last-minute request. Thank you.
