By Surinderdeep Singh | Letter to the Editor |
I had recently bought and read all five of the books by Karminder Singh Dhillon. These are hardcover books with excellent print quality. I highly recommend the set.
My favourites were the ‘Selected Gurbani Shabds‘ and ‘Selected Sikhi Concepts’.
The 522-page Selected Gurbani Shabds presents popular but wrongly translated Shabads. Take the blatant mistranslations of the Jo Mangey Thakur Aapney Ko. It’s not EVEN the Rahao of the Shabad! The translation sounds good to the ear, but is faulty. In this book the author has provided the proper meaning; with a proper reference to the Rahao Principle. (The principle is further elaborated in the book).
You get the proper and meaningful translations in Karminder’s work. Selected Sikhi Concepts (315-page) should be made a compulsory reading for every Sikh in the world.
Both my kids think Sikhi is a bit of a joke when they started reading the translations in our Gurdwaras and I don’t blame them. The translations presented are wanting.
Please get many other younger Sikhs to understand this before it is too late. His books will take you on an educational journey. I just hope we have enough copies of those books to go around.
The price was a steal for me and the most beneficial RM100 investment of my entire life.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The two books mentioned above are sold together Understanding Salok Bhagat Kabir Jio Kay (272 pages), Understanding Salok Sheikh Fareed Kay (164 pages) and Understanding Salok Mahala 9 (112 pages) – in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 30, 2022.
