Sports enthusiast Gagandeep Singh, who won the SSU Kelab Aman presidency by a razor-thin majority a decade ago, is set for another closely watched contest, this time against veteran businessman Gordev Singh for the leadership of the Kuala Lumpur-based club.

Both contenders have presented their respective line-ups for all committee posts. At the AGM tomorrow (June 28), members will elect the team that will run the 52-year-old club for the next two years. Lawyer Parvinder Singh Doal has served as president for two terms, from 2022 to 2026.

Former Kelab Aman treasurer Mender Singh is among the few independent candidates in the fray. In his campaign poster, he raised concerns over the club’s declining income, rising expenses and increasing financial burden on members.

“I’ve served as the club’s treasurer for two terms. I introduced multiple quotations for purchases and projects to ensure transparent procurement,” he told Asia Samachar in a phone conversation.

The retired police superintendent is contesting the vice-president’s post, where he faces former Universiti Malaya sports centre director Dr Balbir Singh, from Team Gagan, and outgoing vice-president and veteran flight crew member Avethar Singh, from Team Gordev.

Gordev, who serves as a director in several prominent enterprises, including Aero Guards Protection (M) Sdn Bhd, is campaigning on a pledge to build a future-ready club for all members.

Gagandeep, also a businessman, is focusing on maximising existing facilities, increasing club income and enhancing the member experience. In 2016, he defeated Amarjit Singh Deo for the presidency by just three votes.

The secretary’s post will see incumbent Harnarain Singh Gill challenged by Harnish Kaur Sangha, while the treasurer’s race pits Daljeet Singh Gill, director and owner of Broken Arrow Security Sdn Bhd and Hangout Sports Cafe & Bar, against company audit head Inderjit Singh.
