OTTAWA: Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu will lead nearly 300 delegates on a major trade mission to India next week, marking Canada’s largest trade delegation to the country in more than three decades.

The October 12–17 mission will visit Mumbai and Bengaluru, bringing Canadian businesses together with Indian policymakers, industry leaders and potential commercial partners.

Announcing the mission on Friday (Oct 9), Global Affairs Canada said the delegation would include representatives from aerospace, clean technology, energy, information and communications technology, life sciences and agri-food industries.

The initiative forms part of Ottawa’s efforts to diversify its export markets and strengthen commercial ties with India, one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

Sidhu said the mission would help Canadian companies secure new opportunities while attracting investment and creating jobs.

“By matching Canadian expertise in sectors like aerospace, agri-food and clean technology with India’s growing demand, we will diversify our trade and attract new investment,” he said.

Canada aims to more than double annual bilateral trade with India to C$70 billion by 2030, compared with C$30.4 billion in goods and services trade recorded in 2025.

The mission also supports ongoing efforts to conclude a comprehensive economic partnership agreement by the end of 2026.

The renewed commercial engagement follows a diplomatic thaw after relations deteriorated sharply in 2023 over allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India denied the allegations. The rapprochement began under Prime Minister Mark Carney in 2025, with both countries restoring high commissioners, and gathered momentum during Carney’s visit to India in March 2026.
