Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain passes away

Zakir Hussain (1951 – 2024)

By Asia Samachar | United States |

Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain who brought Indian classical music to global prominence has died at the age of 73.

The master teacher and a mesmerising performer on stage passed away in a hospital in San Francisco, US, on Dec 16 due to lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola, a dancer in the Indian classical style Kathak, whom he married in 1978. The couple have two daughter, Isabella and Anisa Qureshi.

Born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai’s Mahim to legendary tabla master Ustad Allarakha, Zakir Hussain displayed an innate talent for rhythm from a young age. He began learning the tabla at three and was performing in concerts by 12.

A child prodigy, he went on to collaborate with Indian legends such as Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma, as well as Western icons like The Beatles, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mickey Hart, according to reports.

Zakir dated his musical career from two days after he was born, according to a NYT report.

“I was brought home from the hospital,” he told NPR in 2015. “The tradition is that the son is handed to the father, and then the father has to recite a prayer in his son’s ear, putting him on his way. My father, when he took me in his arm, instead of reciting a prayer, he sang rhythms in my ear. And my mother was very upset and said, ‘Why are you doing this?’ And he said, ‘Because this is my prayer.’”

He studied and taught ethnomusicology at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned a Ph.D. He moved to Northern California to teach at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, where he led the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band, a cross-cultural, percussion-centered group.

Sikh nurse performs CPR at Sabah airport emergency

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

A Sikh nurse sprang into action to provide CPR to a man suffering a sudden cardiac arrest at the Sandakan airport in Sabah last month.

Naveneet Kaur knew that time was of essence for the victim in the incident on November 15.

Without hesitation, she initiated chest compressions alongside a few passengers who were also on the scene. They took turns performing CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. Unfortunately, the man tragically passed away one week later, reported online news portal Nabalu News.

“It is heartbreaking when efforts don’t lead to a positive outcome, but knowing CPR gave me the ability to try. CPR is a skill everyone should have because it could make all the difference in saving someone’s life,” she said.

The most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest is an irregular heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. Rapid, erratic heart signals cause the lower heart chambers to quiver uselessly instead of pumping blood.

Naveneet, a senior staff nurse with 14 years of experience, is attached to a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah.

Singapore envoy goes ballistic over ‘tasteless’ chai in Gurgoan

Singapore High Commissioner to India Simon Wong on chai in Gurgaon, India

By Asia Samachar | India |

“The impossible happened. I just had a cup of tasteless #Chai in Gurgaon. Rs 169 with tax.”

That was the entry by the Singapore high commissioner to India on Saturday (Dec 14). Yes, chaa or chai – take your pick -0 is serious business!

The entry on X came with two photos: an earthen cup or kulhad and the interior of a coffee outlet that he did not name.

Later in the same day, he made a second entry: “The true beauty of India lies in her people. I am overwhelmed by the torrent of invitations to have a cup of the best homemade #chai. I humbly thank you all.”

Looks like Wong has been won over by the overhelming chai invitations so far. All may just end well with some nice cups of chai.

By Asia Samachar | Britain |

The Sikhs at Deloitte UK came together recently to celebrate Guru Nanak’s 555th birth as well as the 10 years of the setting up of Deloitte Sikh Network (DNS).

“Our event was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the profound teachings of Guru Nanak, who emphasised the importance of equality, selfless service, and devotion to one God; transcending religious boundaries encouraging humanity. Which is still relevant to us all today,” Satwinder R, a UK-based director at Deloitte, said in a LinkedIn posting.

“We ‘plotted our pind’ (ancestral village), listened to some through-provoking perspectives from Jagbir Jhutti-Johal and Amandeep Madra OBE. Marvelled at artefacts and insights shared by Rav Singh and Ajunee Dhillon. Alongside some wonderful eateries provided by DIPNA ANAND whilst browsing artwork from Satnam Birdi and Simran Panesar.

“Having founded the DSN 10 years ago – time has just flown, I’m humbled by what we have done so far – and excited for what is still yet to come. This is all down to the amazing team we have had, past and present who make it a success and will continue to innovate and thrive. And a huge thanks to those who participate, join and present – we are nothing without you. Thank you all,” he added.

Rupee hits record low against US dollar

2

By Asia Samachar | India |

The Indian rupee weakened to its lifetime low against the US dollar (USD) on Tuesday, hurt by concerns about a widening trade deficit and likely outflows from local equities, although intervention by the central bank capped losses.

The rupee hit a low of 84.93 against the U.S. dollar, before closing at 84.8950, down 0.04% on the day, reported Reuters.

The rupee closed at 19.0145 against the Malaysian ringgit (RM) and 62.8667 against the Singapore dollar (SGD).

For the last one-year, the RM-Rupee traded 17.2655 to 20.3126. In the last decade it traded between 14.4914 and 20.3126, with the lowest point taking place in April 2017 and high point in September 2024.

The Rupee traded between 61.1855 and 65.378 against SGD in the last one year. For the last 10 years, it hit the lowest of 45.0739 in March 2025 and the high of 65.378 in September 2024.

Special Branch officer Gurcharan Singh gets promotion

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

Gurcharan Singh Udham Singh has been promoted to the rank of Senior Asisstant Commissioner (SAC) from Assistant Commissioner (ACP), making him the second Sikh police officer holding the rank of SAC.

He has been appointed as the Assistant Director E9 of the Bukit Aman Special Branch, commonly called the SB.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Razarudin Husain pinned the new rank on Gurcharan and other officers at the police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Dec 16)

Bukit Aman is usually refered to the headquarters of the Royal Malaysia Police or Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM).

On its part, the SB collects intelligence on internal and external threats to the country, including subversive, extremist, and sabotage activities. They also gather intelligence on opposition politicians, non-government organisations (NGOs) and activists. It is currently led by Commissioner Mohd Khalid Ismail.

In October, Ravindar Singh Sarban Singh, who was earlier promoted to the rank SAC, took over as the Kuala Lumpur police contingent head of crime prevention and community safety department.

Sikhs have a long cherished tradition of serving the Malaysian police force. In 2016, Amar Singh made history for the Sikh community in Malaysia when he was appointed as the chief police officer (CPO) of Kuala Lumpur, with the rank of commissioner, the highest rank attained by a Sikh police officer in Malaysia. In fact, Amar even held the distinction of being the highest ranking Sikh police officer in Asia, ex-India.

When he retired in 2018, he brought to a close a three-generation run spanning over 90 years in the police force.

Santokh Singh was the last Sikh to be appointed as a state police chief when he was made Selangor CPO with the rank of SAC 1.
