Deepavali decoration at the KLCC mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Photo: Asia Samachar
By P Singh | Malaysia | Letter to Editor |
I miss the Deepavali celebrations that we all have greatly enjoyed. For us, growing up in Malaysia, to completely accept it as our [celebration], will remain so in my mainframe forever.
Come 1984, due to a political decision made by Indira Gandhi, we the Sikhs begun our silent slip and slide which has now lead us to an almost complete exodus from Deepavali celebrations, replaced by the Bandi Chor instead.
Why must one harmonious race become an enemy of another due to ONE political decision?
History is overwhelmingly laden with wars, tyrannies, dictatorships, dynasties, rulers, kings and regimental colonialism. What simple lesson can we learn from these thousands of years of historical events? For me, it teaches me not to rationally react to the political will, political ramifications and their relevant repercussions which naturally will spike and insinuate violence, bloodshed…
Simple mindsets changes will and can easily steer us away from being captivated by these ongoing political tyrants who will keep on coughing nothing else but stale germs on our evergreen and innocent flesh.
I have sort of stopped reading and watching the news because it only ferments hatred, jealousy and revenge.
Right and wrong of a political will and its decisions should never ever entice us to nod an approval to amend centuries of historic cultural events and their cheerful happy values such as Deepavali firmly holds .
I LOVE the multi-racial, muhibbah community celebration spirit we Malaysian are born and blessed with. It’s a precious privilege which teaches us to value multi-cultural values and accept each other’s values and faiths.

Gurdwara Sahib Kuala Pilah (GSKP) will be embarking on urgently needed replacement of the roof its Darbar Sahib, the main prayer hall of the 86 year-old gurdwara in the Malaysian state of Negeri Sembilan.
The renovation, plus some additional work (see list below), is estimated to cost RM160,000. The gurdwara management team has raised RM55,000 so far. They are short of RM105,000.
“The roof tiles of GSKP Darbar Sahib are cracked and in need of replacement. A canvas has been temporarily placed on the roof to prevent leaks and to protect the paint and carpet in the Darbar Sahib,” according to a note from the gurdwara management committee, which has been confirmed by the Asia Samachar.
In 2014, GSKP completed its Langgar Hall area renovated. Last year (2022), it renovated its darbar sahib (prayer hall), including introducing a marble palki.
Below is the written note from the GSKP to Asia Samachar:
Gurdwara Sahib Kuala Pilah has been established since 1937. Today, it caters to around 15 Sikh families from Kuala Pilah and Jempol. We are currently facing a significant challenge that requires immediate attention. The roof of our Darbar Sahib is in a dire state of disrepair, with severe leaks that have persisted for quite some time. The current roofing system is nearly a century old, and it is no longer effective in protecting the interior of Darbar Sahib. Currently, we had to cover our roof with a sheet of canvas to avoid severe leaking which could damage the paint and carpet in the Darbar Sahib.
The current renovation/upgrading works would include:
New Roof tiles from BMI Roofing Systems Sdn Bhd (S-Pantile roof tiles) together with relevant materials – COST = RM32,000
Workmanship Costs RM125,000
Replacement of current roof truss system as the current can’t hold the new roof tiles
Replacement of major wooden roof trusses to aluminium one’s to withstand for a longer period.
Extension which includes extra roof trusses for 7 to 8 Feet around the darbar sahib to provide more shade
Labour cost to bring down the current roof tiles & roof trusses & insurance for the whole project
Changing of rainwater collecting system from steel to stainless steel
The renovation, to start on Dec 5, will take around 3 to 4 weeks.
At the moment, total donation collected is RM55,000 out of RM160,000.
All donations can be directed to CIMB Account Number: 8004382014 (Gurdwara Sahib Kuala Pilah Building Fund).
Please send the bank-in slip to +6019-821 8654 for the issuance of an official receipt. We are deeply grateful for your consideration and any support you can offer to Gurdwara Sahib Kuala Pilah.

‘Bole so ninaal’ resounds at the Everest Base Camp on 11 October 2023 as a group of Malaysian hikers reach the camp at 5,364 metres above sea level.
By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |
A group of Sikh hikers reached the Everest Base Camp, the world’s highest base camp at 5,364 metres above sea level.
They successfully raised the Nishan Sahib at Everest Base Camp on the 11 October 2023, at 6pm Malaysian time.
This same group, members of the Mountain Goat Adventures Inc, last year successfully hiked up to the Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) which is situated in Myagdi district of Nepal, 40 km directly north of Pokhara.
The team consisted Amreek Singh, Ravinder Singh, Harjinder Singh, Rvinder Singh and Prethpal Singh.
The total trip distance to Everest Base Camp was around 120 km. They have some delays when travelling from Rammechap to Lukla due to bad weather and sudden subzero temperatures(-10 degrees celcius) further up in the mountains.
The group is having Sukhmani Sahib Prayers on the 18 November 2023 (3pm to 5pm) at Gurdwara Sahib Parliament, Kuala Lumpur to celebrate their achievement and look forward to their next upcoming adventure in 2024.

Canadian poet Rupi Kaur has declined an invitation from the United States White House to attend a Diwali celebration.
The India-born poet said she will not attend the dinner, which will be hosted by US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday evening, due to the Biden administration’s continued support of Israel and its bombardment of Gaza.
“I decline any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population—50% of whom are children,” she wrote in a statement posted on social media.
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, celebrates the triumph of justice and light over darkness. The festival is the biggest holiday observed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world and is characterised by lights, colour, dancing and music.
Kaur posted a lengthy letter on X saying, “Diwali is the celebration of righteousness over falsehood and knowledge over ignorance.” During this time, Kaur wrote, she reflects on “what it means to fight for freedom against oppression”.
Kaur urged her followers to join the push against the continuing Gaza assault. “I implore my South Asian community to hold this administration accountable,” she wrote. “We cannot remain silent or agreeable just to get a seat at the table. It comes at too high a cost to human life.”
“When a government’s actions dehumanize people anywhere in the world, it is our moral imperative to call for justice. Do not be afraid. Stand with the world and demand a humanitarian ceasefire. Many voices will join you when you speak. Let us sign petitions. Attend protests. Boycott. Call our reps and say – stop the genocide,” Kaur concluded.
Vice President Harris, who is also of Indian descent, hosted the largest ever White House Diwali event in her home last year, with at least 200 guests that included prominent figures from the South Asian community.

The Married v Bachelors in Diwali Cup 2023 in Malacca
By Harban Singh | Malaysia |
The much awaited Diwali Cup annual hockey game in Malacca between the married and bachelors for 2023 was a rousing success.
Played at the Bukit Serendit Hockey Stadium on Nov 11, 2023, it featured all the Malacca-born players and those presently residing in the state.
Thanks to the main organisers Karam, Shindey, Jasbeer and their team, it featured some former state and Malaysian international players.
The match lived up to it’s billing in the first three quarters with the score at 2-1, but experience and good teamwork saw The Married as runaway winners with Captain Inderjit and Anil scoring two goals each. Aside from these two players, Harnesh emerged as the outstanding player for the Married.
Tuchel scored for the Bachelors, with their first attempt at goal via a penalty corner. These young lads were good but lacked match temperament and teamwork, despite their age.
The earlier netball game was won by the Singles (‘Bachelors’) in Netball at 12-4.
