Now you can eat gurdwara food ‘tanpa was-was’

A former Malaysian federal minister and state mufti visited a Malaysian gurdwara that has been churning out thousands of hot vegetarian meals for flood victims for the last few days. His verdict: The food is ‘halal‘ for the Muslims.

The green light came after Dr Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri visited Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya (GSPJ) today (22 Dec).

The view should assuage the apprehension of some Muslims who had questioned the if the food was halal for them to consume.

“It is permissible to eat food from non-Muslims who are not People of the Book as long as it does not involve meat slaughtered by them,” he said in a social media entry after the visit. (The original text, in Malay: Hukum Muslim memakan makanan daripada bukan Muslim yang bukan ahli kitab adalah dibolehkan selagi mana tidak melibatkan haiwan sembelihan mereka.)

Dr Zulkifli was the Mufti of the Federal Territories before being tapped as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Religious Affairs in the Perikatan Nasional administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin from March 2020 to August 2021.

Gurdwaras worldwide usually have kitchens where large scale vegetarian meals are cooked for the congregation. The meals, called Guru Ka Langgar, are vegetarian and does not consist alcohol so that it can be consumed by people of all persuasions. The Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, popularly known as the Golden Temples, is badged as the world’s largest community kitchen feeding 100,000 hot meals daily.

Since Sunday (Dec 19), GSPJ had been producing some 10,000 packed meals daily – all freshly cooked and packed by volunteers at the gurdwara – to be distributed to the flood victims of one of the worst flooding incident in the recent years in Malaysia. The gurdwara has also set-up a call centre to receive calls from flood victims and organised delivery of the meals. Neighbouring Shah Alam gurdwara has followed suit, whipping up 5,000 packs of meals a daily.

But some had cast doubts if the gurdwara food was permissible for Muslims, asking if they can consume it ‘tanpa was-was‘ (without hesitation). At the same time, some Malaysian Muslims had vouched for the food prepared at GSPJ.

“Saya Muslim. Saya tahu halal haram. Saya volunteer di Gurdwara smlm. Saya bantu sedia makanan & makan juga masa lunch break. Ya HALAL. Vegetarian only. Kpd yg pertikai tu, tlg jgn jadi toxic sgt musim bencana ni. Rakyat Msia semua nak bantu mangsa,” tweeted Sharifah Shahidah, a former deputy secretary-general of political party PKR.

Here’s Dr Zulkifli’s full entry:

Saya mengenali agama Sikh melalui konsep “seva” iaitu khidmat sukarela tanpa mengharapkan sebarang balasan.

Penganut Sikh mengamalkan diet vegetarian.

Shah Alam gurdwara prepared 2,000 packs of hot vegetarian meals to be distributed to flood victims in Sepang, Hulu Langat, Meru and Taman Sri Tanjung.

Some 500 packs were taken by Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) for lunch and dinner at their relief centre.

There was a good turnout today of volunteers, comprising people from various races and faith, at Gurdwara Sahib Guru Nanak Shah Alam (GSGNSA).

A huge load of clothes also arrived today, sent by Sikhs from Butterworth and surrounding areas.

The Shah Alam gurwara was not spared the massive flooding that hit Klang Valley and elsewhere in Malaysia. On Saturday (18 Dec), volunteers saw the gurdwara’s kitchen utensil floating in flood waters.

When the water receded the next day, volunteers started the clean up work. And the next day, on Monday (20 Dec), they mobilsed their resources to cook hot vegetarian meals for those holed up in temporary flood relief centres.

Volunteers form all races and faiths join community meal cooking at Shah Alam gurdwara

And the next day, on Monday (20 Dec), they mobilised their resources to cook hot vegetarian meals for those holed up in temporary flood relief centres.

“We were able to enter the gurdwara on Monday. Looking at the need of the hour, we decided to start our seva. We are sending food to the various relief stations, and fulfilling any request for hot meals. Some of them are in neighbouring schools and suraus,” Gurdwara Sahib Guru Nanak Shah Alam (GSGNSA) committee president Patminderjit Sigh told Asia Samachar in a telephone conversation. “We decided to join Petaling Jaya and others in extending a helping hand in this difficult period.”

They also distributed essentials like milk powder biscuits, baby formula sanitary pads and instant cup noodles to flood affected areas especially those at Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam.

“The most heartwarming experience was the presence of a group of Malay youth from the vicinity to help in the sewa. It was a delight to have them to assist in the sewa. They were responding to the messages for volunteers put up in the various social media,” said a volunteer.

Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya (GSPJ) was among the first gurdwaras in the Klang Valley to kick start cooking hot meals for the flood victims. Hundreds of volunteers, of all races and faiths, turned up to join its efforts.

Neighbouring Gurdwara Sahib Subang is also mobilising its volunteers. They are collecting items from well wishers to be sent to GSPJ as well as distributing cooked hot meals.

While residents in Subang Jaya and USJ – the immediate neghbouring of the Subang gurdwara – were mostly unaffected directly by the floods, the gurdwara decided to provide food and shelter to those affected.

On the first two days, it accommodated some 15 people who were stranded due to the floods.

On Sunday, the gurdwara took over a wedding function at the last moment from the Shah Alam gurdwara as the latter was flooded.

“Today we are receiving another 15 Sikh foreign workers whose homes are flooded. They’ll be with us until their employers makes alternative arrangements,” a GSS volunteer told Asia Samachar.

URGENT APPEAL FROM SHAH ALAM GURDWARA: We badly need people to come and do sewa. We are cooking and packing about 5,000 packs of food to be distributed. Singapore: Youth’s death spurs new initiative to look out for one another

By Malavika Menon | The Straits Times | Singapore |

SINGAPORE – The suicide of a young person in their community last year spurred the Sikh Welfare Council (Siwec) to start an initiative empowering family members and friends to be “eyes and ears”, looking out for individuals around them who may be struggling with mental health concerns.

Launched on Sept 30, Theek Thak or “All Ok?” was the culmination of a year’s effort by Siwec members along with therapists, counsellors and other grassroots level organisations.

Siwec provides educational support, family support services and eldercare services among other services to the Sikh community, as well as non-Sikhs in Singapore.

Siwec’s chairman, Mr Harmit Singh, said community organisations need to take the lead in promoting conversations about mental health.

“The biggest aim of this initiative is to destigmatise mental health issues. We must acknowledge that the chances of people coming forward for help are low, so it takes a village, the people around them, to look out for signs that someone needs help,” he added.

The initiative directs users on social media to the resources that they can use to get help, including Siwec’s own counselling services.

Mr Sarabjeet Singh, management committee member at Siwec, said the kits were developed with the need to reach out to people from diverse backgrounds in mind. He said Siwec hoped to collaborate with other organisations to come up with new editions of the kit.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya’s ‘multiracial’ kitchen has been cooking up a storm to feed starving flood victims.

The Gurdwara kicked off its flood-related voluntary operations on Sunday and has since distributed over 10,000 warm vegetarian and halal food to various locations yesterday.

Last night, the Gurdwara sent out a request for volunteers to arrive by 8am or earlier to help with food preparation and packing. It also called out to 4WD vehicle owners to arrive by 11am to assist with food distribution as many of the flood-hit areas can only be accessed by such vehicles.

Photos on social media this morning showed men and women from different races, faith and religion congregating to the Gurdwara with a common purpose – to get hot meals to the flood victims.

Everyone is also seen wearing headscarves while busy chopping vegetables and cooking. It is customary to wear headscarves or cover one’s head with a bandanna in a Gurdwara as a sign of respect. There is always extra headscarves at a Gurdwara for guests to use.

By 9.30am approximately 2,000 hot meals were ready to be sent out to Sri Muda and Batu Tiga flood victims and they sent an urgent request for the 4WD owners to come in earlier than originally requested.

A group of young volunteers were huddled together in a circle, with papers in front of them. They were mapping out the delivery of freshly cooked vegetarian meals and water for flood victims in the Klang Valley.

They are part of a huge number of volunteers who turned up at the Petaling Jaya gurdwara since morning (20 Dec) to lend a helping hand to the efforts to cook vegetarian meals for those affected the flash floods in Klang Valley following heavy downpours for the last few days.

“The huge turnout has been a blessing. We also had volunteers from other faiths,” one of the volunteers said.

Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya (GSPJ) have opened up a call centre to coordinate efforts to provide cooked hot meals as well as assist those stranded in their homes.

They are cooking at least 10,000 meals. The food is then packed and distributed to areas in Klang, Shah Alam and other affected areas.

In the meantime, Tatt Khalsa Diwan Selangor has thrown open its doors to provide temporary shelter to
