Penang’s Olympus bags award for facilities management excellence

Olympus Management & Services founders of Harvinderjit Singh and Edreena Kaur wins the Top Asia Corporate Ball 2025

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

Olympus Management & Services (M) Sdn Bhd, a Penang-grown facilities management and cleaning solutions provider run by a Sikh couple, has clinched an award at the Top Asia Corporate Ball 2025 in Kuala Lumpur last month.

The Penang-grown company bagged the Company of the Year Award 2025 (Best in Facilities Management).

The annual gala to honor the winners, organised by Top 10 of Malaysia, the Research House of Asia (RHA) and RHA Media, was graced by Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s younger sister Yang Amat Mulia Paduka Puteri Tunku Mariamz Al-Marhum Sultan Iskandar.

Founded and led by husband-and-wife team Harvinderjit Singh Raghbir Singh and Edreena Kaur Jasbir Singh, Olympus is building up its reputation as a specialist in commercial and industrial cleaning, landscaping, post-construction work and specialised sanitation services.

The company positions itself as a quality-focused service provider equipped with high-end machinery, imported chemical systems and a dedicated inspection and audit team to uphold service standards.

The company’s operations emphasise sustainability, deploying modern cleaning technologies that reduce water usage, rely on low-chemical processes and align with Malaysia’s growing ESG framework.

Its disinfecting and sanitising solutions use SDS-certified Crusader and Airlift Spice Island chemicals, while advanced equipment such as industrial scrubbers, Rotowash systems and water-jet machines ensure efficiency and safety across sites.

Olympus also specialises in residential and commercial maintenance covering corridors, rooftops, car parks, drainage, podiums, facilities rooms and surrounding building perimeters.

Looking ahead, Olympus is expanding into ESG-driven facilities management, including R&D, to replace lead-acid batteries with lithium-ion alternatives.

“This initiative supports both global sustainability trends and Penang’s “Cleaner, Greener” aspirations,” said Harvinderjit.

In winning the award, Harvinderjit said the company also acknowledges the strategic guidance of board advisor Dennis Chuah, the founder of Eclimo Sdn Bhd and president of the Electric Vehicles Association of Malaysia (EVAM).

He said his involvement has accelerated Olympus’ transformation into a technology-enabled service provider, incorporating smart-cleaning systems, IoT-based workforce monitoring, low-emission equipment and compliance with international RBA standards.

Rupee slumps against regional peers as 2025 turns challenging

0
Ringgit v Indian Rupee

By Asia Samachar | India |

The Indian rupee is enduring one of its toughest years in recent memory, slipping sharply against key regional and global currencies such as the Malaysian ringgit, Singapore dollar (SGD) and Australian dollar.

The rupee has emerged as Asia’s worst-performing currency of 2025, putting it on course for its steepest annual decline since 2022.

That earlier downturn coincided with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which sent global crude oil prices soaring above US$100 per barrel and hit India particularly hard, given that the country imports roughly 90% of its oil needs.

Today, India’s central bank lowered its benchmark interest rate for the first time in six months after inflation slid to an all-time low, giving the economy a further boost in the face of high US tariffs.

The Reserve Bank of India’s six-member monetary policy committee, led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, voted unanimously to cut the repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 5.25% on Friday. The rupee held onto gains after the rate announcement, and rose 0.2% to 89.7750 against the dollar, Bloomberg reported.

“Despite an unfavorable and challenging external environment, the Indian economy has shown remarkable resilience,” the governor said, reported the news agency. “The headroom provided by the inflation outlook has allowed us to remain growth supportive.”

This year’s pressures on the Indian currency stem from a different mix of challenges. Unlike 2022, when external commodity shocks drove the slump, the 2025 weakness is largely tied to higher US tariffs on Indian exports.

Against the Malaysian ringgit, the rupee has softened considerably. RM1 now fetches ₹21.83, a considerable increase from ₹17.11 in November 2022. Over recent years, this relationship has steadily shifted as the rupee weakened and the ringgit held comparatively firmer amid steadier capital inflows.

Versus the Singapore dollar, the contrast is even starker. The SGD to INR rate is hovering near 69–70 rupees per SGD. It was hovering at lows of ₹53.90 in March 2021. This reflects not just rupee weakness but the SGD’s relative resilience driven by Singapore’s prudent monetary policy and external surpluses.

Against the Australian dollar, data shows persistent divergence too. One Aussie dollar now converts to ₹59.52, up from ₹51.60 in April.

Charan Kaur Dhesi: Britain’s first Sikh woman pro boxer

Charan Kaur Dhesi turns to professional boxing

By Asia Samachar | Britain |

Charan Kaur Dhesi, a standout athlete, is beginning to make her mark in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

About nine months ago, she announced her decision to officially turn professional, declaring: “I can now proudly say I am the first Sikh female professional boxer coming out of the UK.”

“Thank you to everyone who has supported my journey as an amateur. I can’t wait to transition into the pro scene and make my mark — let’s make history!” she wrote.

Next week (Dec 10), she will appear at an exclusive speaker event at King’s College London.

The programme will begin with a practical boxing session, where Dhesi will guide participants through key techniques and training methods. Afterwards, she will speak about her journey as Britain’s first Sikh woman professional boxer, reflecting on identity, faith, performance, and how she uses her platform to challenge stereotypes and create space for others.

The event, hosted by the King’s College London Amateur Boxing Club in collaboration with the UK-based charity Boxing Is Love, will be held at Bush House from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

Putin lands in India as Delhi balances Russia ties and US pressure

By Asia Samachar | India |

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in New Delhi on Thursday for a rare 30-hour visit, his first trip to India since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago.

The visit comes at a sensitive moment, as the United States intensifies pressure on both Russia and India while Washington’s push for an Ukraine peace settlement appears to have stalled.

Putin’s trip also coincides with a sharp downturn in US-India relations. President Donald Trump has slapped punitive tariffs and threatened sanctions on New Delhi over its continued imports of discounted Russian crude — purchases that surged more than 2,000 percent following the Ukraine invasion. The strain has made India’s balancing act between Russia and the West increasingly difficult.

During the visit, Putin will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a private dinner before attending a full slate of ceremonial and bilateral engagements on Friday, including talks at Hyderabad House and meetings with business leaders. The Kremlin has described the visit as “of great importance” for strengthening what both nations call a “privileged strategic partnership”, reported Al Jazeera.

Putin is accompanied by senior defence officials and executives from major Russian energy and arms firms, signalling a push to expand defence sales and diversify bilateral trade beyond oil. Russia remains India’s largest arms supplier, accounting for over a third of its defence imports. New Delhi is exploring additional purchases of the S-400 air defence system, while Moscow aims to pitch its Su-57 stealth fighter.

Yet the centrepiece of India-Russia ties — oil — is now under threat. Recent US sanctions on Russian energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil, coupled with India’s biggest refiner halting exports involving Russian crude, are expected to sharply reduce imports. Trade between the two countries, which ballooned to nearly US$69bn this year, may fall as a result.

Analysts told Al Jazeera that India hopes to maintain strategic autonomy, even as it negotiates key trade deals with the US, EU and Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union. Moscow, facing a labour shortage, is also opening its job market to Indian workers as a new area of cooperation.

Still, experts warn that India’s delicate diplomatic equilibrium will remain under strain until progress is made toward ending the Ukraine war.
