Thanks for investing in my education, Singapore!

By Harvinder Singh Grewal | Singapore  |

I remember my schooling (Primary and Secondary) days in Singapore being an integral part of multi-cultural society and reverence given during flag raising/lowering ceremonies and singing our National anthem “Majulah Singapura” and reciting our pledge made us so proud and gave us an identity growing as an individual. Joining Ngee Ann Polytechnic gave me the freedom to choose my career path, I chose Electronics and Communication Engineering, which contributed to the techie and trouble-shooter in me. My parents returned to India in 1989 but my future was tagged to Singapore as being a foreign student, I had already signed a student-bond for the state Sponsorship. Thanks for investing in my education, Singapore!

Poly prepared us for the future to come to contribute to the economical success of Singapore. My first job in Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a Technical Specialist gave me all rounded technical, process and systems exposure. HP was also responsible for sponsoring my Singapore Permanent Residence. HP also invested in my social and extra-curricular growth by sending the few “cream of the crop” to the USA to transfer technology to Singapore.

It was 1995 when I received the invitation letter for Singapore Citizenship from The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Finally I could claim and announce to be a proud SINGAPOREAN!! Getting married changing jobs (local and aboard) for progress and growth, starting a family, going to finish my degree from RMIT University in Information Technology, 10 years after my Diploma thanks to Al Rubin (Kulicke & Soffa) for edging and sponsoring me to pursue my full potential, was a challenge no doubt but an investment worth while one as it fueled the next chapter of my career growth, working for NTUC FairPrice Co-Operative in various growing positions. Bernard Chew and Dickson Yeo thanks for the trust and belief in me to setup and build the logistics technology group capable of delivering and sustaining state of the art fully automated logistics solutions serving the FairPrice Group Supply Chain.

Looking back all these years I am proud to say that I am a product of Singapore. I am proud to introduce myself as a “Singaporean” a brand I feel very much proud of and carry close to my heart.

We all have a state we need to belong to and connect with… Singapore is my home and state.

Happy 56th Birthday Singapore I feel proud to have grown along side of you contributing to your growth.

Majulah Singapura! Onwards Singapore!

Here’s to many more years of progress and prosperity.

Malaysian Gurdwaras Council defends apportionment of RM3m federal funds

1

By Asia Samachar| Malaysia  |

The Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) has defended the apportionment of the RM3 million funds received in May 2021 from the federal government.

In a response to a report in Asia Samachar, MGC president Jagir Singh said the criticism of its apportionment, as expressed by a former gurdwara committee president, was ‘unfair and without basis’.

In yesterday’s report, former Puchong gurdwara committee president B Awtar Singh said that the umbrella body for gurdwaras in Malaysia should not withhold for itself ‘a big portion’ of the state funds recently allocated by the federal government. “The council has taken one-third of the RM3 million allocated for ‘unnecessary’ purposes,” he said.

In April, the Malaysian federal government announced the approval of RM3 million for gurdwaras in Malaysia and an additional one-off RM1 million funding for the establishment of a new Sikh centre.

Prime Minister Muhyddin Yassin made the announcement at the Vaisakhi 2021 hi tea organised by the MGC in Petaling Jaya on 12 April 2021. The funds, to be channeled via the MGC, were received in the following month.

EXCERPTS FROM JAGIR’S RESPONSE TO ASIA SAMACHAR:

Please comment on the article in which a former gurdwara committee president has called for a review of apportionment of the RM3 million received from the federal government.

The unhappiness expressed by Sdr Awtar Singh in the distribution of funds is unfair and without basis.

The purposes for which the grant was sought was detailed to the YAB PM at the High Tea function on 12/4/21 by the MGC President in his speech detailing the requirements of the Gurdwaras and the Sikh Community. These included:
(i) Financial Grant for Gurdwaras to defray maintenance costs of Gurdwaras
(ii) financial grant to enable Gurdwaras to carry out special projects like fencing, langgar hall repairs , leaking roof repairs, etc.
(iii) financial grant for carrying out Gurbani classes, Punjabi classes for adults, etc.

The total requested was more than RM5 million but the YAB PM only approved RM3 million for all above 3 requests .Thus this RM3 million grant needed to be apportioned and this was done by the MGC Exco vide its zoom meeting in may 2021. Representatives from states had also participated in the discussion and subsequently took decision to apportion the RM3 million as follows:

  • RM15,000 to each of 120 Gurdwaras making a total of RM1.8 million.
  • Additional RM 15,000 was allocated to GS Petaling Jaya as per YAB PM request.
  • RM485,000/- was allocated for Gurdwaras to carry out renovation works. A total of 33 applications were received from Gurdwaras to carry out small projects and all were approved. MGC is now in the process of distributing payment cheques.
  • RM200,000 were allocated towards Gurbani classes,Punjabi classes for adults, etc.
  • RM500,000 was allocated for the much needed Malaysian Sikh Centre which is in response various Gurdwaras requests over the years for assistance in providing qualified Gianis who will be housed here. It will also be a centre for Culture, Religion, Heritage, Sangeet, auditorium for fine arts etc. Its total cost is estimated to be about RM12 million. The Gurdwara reps were supportive of this project and endorsed the need for it at the meeting.

Important to note that the apportionment of financial grant was done in accordance with the requests which were made to the YAB PM. Thus the requests to the YAB PM was not only for Gurdwaras but for other needs as detailed above. All Gurdwaras representatives who were present at the High Tea with the YAB PM on 12/4/2021 can vouch for above.

MGC had also sent out a circular to all the Gurdwaras informing of the Grant of the above RM3 million and its apportionment made by the MGC Executive committee.

Our feedback is that the Gurdwaras are in agreement with the above apportionment which was not only for Gurdwaras but for other needs. Letter to Gurdwaras had also mentioned about the RM1 million allocation towards the proposed Malaysian Sikh Centre.

It is clear from above that everything was done transparently.and following due processes and procedures. The MGC has 100 percent documentary records of any funds received and how distributed

In the letter, MGC said that RM485,000 was apportioned for gurdwaras to carry out renovation works. A total of 33 applications were received from gurdwaras to carry out small projects and all were approved. Please elaborate? What is the total payment for the 33 projects?

The approval has to be given by the MGC Exco. It meets at least four times a year. At every meeting the applications received until meeting date are considered. Any applications received later are considered at the following meetings. Thus applications will be considered in batches, at least 4 times in a year.

At the Exco meeting held in May 2021, a total of 33 applications received until date of meeting were considered. All were approved amounting to RM185,000.

MGC has received further applications after last meeting. This will be considered at meeting towards end of August. Once this fund is fully utilised, then Gurdwaras will have to wait for further funding.

The 33 Gurdwaras were: Wadda GS Kg Pandan, Greentown Ipoh, Subang, Menglembu, Port Dickson, Tawau, Wadda GS Penang, Port Kelang, Putra Heights, Teluk Intan, Tambun, Railways Ipoh, Serendah, Bayan Baru, Kuala Pilah, Sibu, Khalsa Dharmak Jatha Penang, Setia City Darbar, Bidor, Kuala Kangsar, Kajang, Kalumpang, Khalsa Land, Butterworth, Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB), Kota Kinabalu, Batu Pahat, Malacca, Tronoh Mines, Kampar, Sunway, Gunong Rapat and Kangar.

In the letter, MGC said RM200,000 was allocated towards Gurbani and Punjabi classes for adults, etc. Please elaborate.

Gurbani and Punjabi classes were started in December 2018 and ended in march 2020. Here, no money from government was received and classes conducted from own donations made and received. The present RM200,000 received in May are for Gurbani classes, Punjabi classes and for for MGC administration. No classes have been held yet under this allocation as all Gurdwaras are closed. Possibly only classes can be held next year.

MGC had decided to allocate RM500,000 for ‘the much needed’ Malaysian Sikh Centre, noting that it was in response various gurdwaras requests over the years for assistance in providing qualified granthis who will be housed at the centre. Why the need to allocate RM500,000 when RM1 million has already been given? Some may argue that certain gurdwaras may be in dire need of cash due to the current circumstances.

The total cost is at the moment estimated to be at least RM12 million. This project will benefit the Gurdwaras and the Sikh community.

You must compare sum RM500,000 against expected cost of RM12 million. We have to still raise more than RM10 million. In fact a Gurdwara rep, when agreeing had said if RM 500,000 was divided amongst 120 Gurdwaras it will only come up to about RM4000 per Gurdwara. But the RM 500,000 would be more meaningful when channelled towards the Sikh Centre.

Each GS is being given cash RM15,000. MGC is also assisting Gurdwaras to receive funds from state governments which are channelled directly to the Gurdwaras.

On top of all above, the apportionment of funds is done by the Exco which has reps from all states sitting on it. What more can a society like MGC do. It is easy to raise questions even how transparent, honest and ethically one conducts itself.

Legacies of Independence: Religious fanaticism – the opium of the mobs

By Gurnam Singh | Opinion

Legacies of independence: Religious fanaticism – the opium of the mobs’

Aug 14th and 15th 1947 represent the birth of two nations born out of ‘British India, namely, Pakistan and India, respectively. No doubt much pomp and ceremony will be on display in both countries over the coming days celebrating ‘freedom’ from the shackles of colonialism. But when an 8-year-old child can be accused of blasphemy and potentially killed, as well as the regular spasms of so-called ‘communal’ violence that continues to curse both countries, one is required to ponder, what independence? what freedom? What a mess!

The idea that an 8-year-old child, who allegedly ‘intentionally’ urinated on a carpet in the library of a madrassa where religious books were kept, should be convicted and potentially executed under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws is both absurd and inhumane. In truth, this kind of mob violence is instigated by a small number of unscrupulous individuals, who have little regard for piety and faith. By sadly, it is an all too familiar story in the Indian sub-continent famed for its religious fervour and devotion.

We must not forget that much of the communal strife in the subcontinent has its antecedents in the racial divide and rule policies and ideologies deployed by the British Imperialists during the days of the Raj. Religion was pitched against religion, community against community, and caste against caste. And through these policies, friendships were made and broken, families were ruined, geographical lines were created and destroyed, history distorted, traditions corrupted, and most of all, hearts, minds, and bodies were shattered. And the pinnacle of this ‘achievement’ of “divide et impera” or divide and rule is symbolised by the carnage that took place during these months and days leading up to what was essentially the partition of Kashmir, Punjab, and Bengal, in 1947. And today, we are left with divided peoples and 3 bogus nations run by corrupt neofascist religious nationalists.

Ironically, the British colonialists painted a picture of being honest, civilised, rational brokers, when in fact they were the real instigators of violence and hate. There are complex reasons why the kinds of mob violence took place in the Hindu Temple in the Rahim Yar Khan district of Panjab in Pakistan, but one cannot deny they, in part, reflect the ongoing hate-filled legacies of empire and divide and rule strategies adopted by the British. This incident took place in my beloved homeland of Punjab. However, the Punjab that I recognise and love is not the one characterised by such mob violence, religious fanaticism, religious or secular fascism, caste divisions, or violence against women, but the one that reflects the humanitarian and anti-sectarian thought and poetry of Baba Nanak, Guru Arjan, Sheikh Farid, Kabeer, Ravidas, Shah Hussain, Ali Haider, Sultan Bahu, Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Khwaja Ghulam Farid, Allama Iqbal, and many others.

For sure nobody has the right to desecrate text, or building, secular or religious, and such acts must be subject to legal sanction. However, a true believer would never accept the absurdity of ‘blasphemy laws’. For true believers, the strength of their faith would be evidenced in their response to provocation and not the kinds of mob behaviour. If one examines the primary texts of all the great faiths, there is one overall absolute message, and that is peace, love, compassion, and freedom of conscience. Let us not forget the literal meaning of Islam is ‘peace. If one believes in an all-powerful God, then one must accept that it would be impossible to hurt, damage, insult, or otherwise God.

Hence, those speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things need to be understood not as individuals that are necessarily motivated by a reasoned set of beliefs, but most likely but as lacking maturity, knowledge, and being misled and manipulated by others. In such circumstances, fur sure any criminal damage caused and sentiment hurt needs to be dealt with, but not violence! One wonders, what the great prophets may have advocated, and I am pretty sure violent punishment would certainly not have been on their minds.

All faith communities, be they Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, or Jew, have their extreme fringe of hate mongers, though, thankfully they constitute a tiny number. Often dressed in religious garb, they will present themselves as defenders of their faith and play judge and jury to justify all kinds of acts of violence. Let me say on the record, I believe these people are NOT the defenders of faith; they are the ones that bring faith into disrepute, not an 8-year-old child who, at such a young age, cannot know what blasphemy really is about! And so, in a paradoxical sense, the real blasphemers are those who advocate and commit violence in the name of defending the honour of their prophets and even ‘God’!

From Tokyo to Amritsar, India hockey team pays obeisance

By Asia Samachar | Panjab  |

The triumphant Indian men hockey team paid obeisance at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, after winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. They were joined by Gurjit Kaur, the defender and drag-flicker with the Indian women team.

The men’s team took home the bronze medal when they defeated Germany. The women’s team, who finished last (12th) at the Rio Games in 2016, marched into the semi-finals this time around, but they could not land a medal.

Gurjit gave a sterling performance with her penalty-corner conversion in the quarterfinal when they shocked Olympic favourites Australia with a 1-0 victory in the semi-finals. The Amritsar girl belongs to a humble farming family and developed a love for hockey during her schooldays.

Former gurdwara president unhappy with how council distributed funds

1

By Asia Samachar| Malaysia  |

The umbrella body for gurdwaras in Malaysia should not withhold for itself ‘a big portion’ of the state funds recently allocated by the federal government. A former gurdwara committee president questioned the Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) for the move.

“The council has taken one-third of the RM3 million allocated for ‘unnecessary’ purposes,” former Puchong gurdwara committee president B Awtar Singh told Asia Samachar.

The funds were to be channeled via the MGC.

In a letter dated 25 May 2021 to gurdwaras, MGC provided the breakdown for the RM3 million funding. The 120 gurdwaras nationwide will receive RM15,000 each (totalling RM1.8 million); RM485,000 set aside for special gurdwara projects (to pay for urgent repairs, etc); RM200,000 for Panjabi/Gurbani classes and administration, RM200,000 for Malaysian Sikh Centre fund and an additional RK15,000 for Petaling Jaya gurdwara as ‘slightly extra funds…as stated by YAB Prime Minister’.

The distribution to individual gurdwara is now underway, ostensibly delayed by the pandemic induced movement control orders.

Awtar, who is also a local leader of a political party, queried why MGC has earmarked more funds for the Sikh centre, on top of the RM1 million already made available.

“Since last year, many gurdwaras are suffering, big or small. They have their overheads. At this juncture, the Sikh centre is not a priority. It’s a matter of survival [for gurdwaras]. MGC should distribute the full amount to the gurdwaras as they require them now,” he said.

Asia Samachar has reached out to Jagir for comments.

In a speech at the April event, Jagir said the ‘religious, cultural, heritage and language Sikh centre’ would, among others, house around 10 religious experts who would assist gurdwaras in undertaking their religious obligations as well as train local granthis.

A granthi, literally, means a reader of the Sikh scripture called Guru Granth Sahib. The word also commonly refers to the person hired by gurdwaras to manage the Sikh religious affairs.

The MGC mooted centre, estimated to cost between RM10 million to RM12 million, will also showcase the rich heritage of classical music (sangeet), establish a national Sikh library, conduct traditional self-defence training and provide Gurbani discourse.

“This is a new centre, and will have its own building. We will form a professional committee for the setting up of the Sikh Centre as well as fund raising,” Jagir then told Asia Samachar.

In a report in May 2021, Asia Samachar noted that many gurdwaras in Malaysia and Singapore saw their regular income stream disrupted by measures deployed to break the spread of Covid-19, forcing them to resort to their savings to keep things going. For smaller gurdwaras with little reserves, they have had to call upon local well-wishers to fill the gap.

Jagdish Singh Chabra: A diligent community volunteer

1

By Amrick Singh | Tribute | Malaysia |

I have never written a note about the passing of anyone, but I felt very strongly that I must pen my thoughts on the passing away of a close and dear friend and associate that Sardar Jagdish Singh Chabra was to me personally and his commitment to the community at large.

I’ve known Jagdish for about 29 years. I got to know him and his family around 1992 when my family and I moved to USJ (Selangor, Malaysia). So happened that his son and my son were class mates in Form 3 to Form 6 and were also university mates in Universiti Malaya and remain best friends.

Our friendship grew with the formation of the Mighty Khalsa and the Miri Piri brigades (part of the Akal Purakh ki Fauj initiative started by Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia). My youngest daughter Kavita Kaur use to go to their house in USJ 2 for Mighty Khalsa activities every other Sunday and our elder children use to attend the Miri Piri activities.

Jagdish Singh was also very supportive and contributed hugely to his wife Phenji Darshan Kaur’s pursuit of community work. He was also an active member of the father’s group who were coordinating the Miri Piri Brigade.

Very early on, Jagdish Singh and a few of us realised that we needed our own facilities as a meeting place for Sikhs in Subang Jaya.

To achieve this objective, we formed a protem committee and in 2008 registered Persatuan Sikh Subang Selangor with the aim of getting a piece of land from the government of Selangor. Despite many setbacks, we persisted and following a change of government in Selangor we obtained the land on which our Gurdwara Sahib Subang stands.

Jagdish served as an assistant secretary from its inception until a few years ago. He attended all meetings and also contributed actively during the meetings. He was very diligent in maintaining the minutes and the paper work of the Association. Even when he opted to stay out of the committee he paid close attention to all the proceedings of the association and the Gurdwara Sahib.

Besides being a founding member of the association, Jagdish was also a founding member of Koperasi Sikh Selangor Berhad.

I’m personally very indebted to him for his total support and sewa in all our activities. His demise will certainly be felt by the members of the association, Koperasi and the the Subang Community at large.

Udasi role in Hijacking of Sikhi – Continued

1

“The udasis, followers of the disowned son of Guru Nanak, established themselves firmly and deceptively within the parameters of Sikh. To achieve their goal of hijacking of Sikhi, they worked to anchor their legitimacy amongst authentic Sikhs, the goal of which was to gain their trust and acceptability, To do such, they concocted a corrupted version of Sikhi that was parallel to the Sikhi of Guru Nanak.”

In the third of the Hijacking of Sikhi video series, Karminder Singh Dhillon continues the discussion on the distortion, corruption and adulteration that Sikhi has endured at the hands of the Udasis from 1718 till present.

Karminder is the author of the recently released ‘The Hijacking of Sikhi’, is a 420-page book containing 17 chapters that stitches together the author’s more recent writings, fortified further with argument as to what has gone wrong in transmitting Sikhi for so long now. If you have read the book, you cannot but notice the author’s strong views on the topic. Now, you can listen to them in this video series.

SEE EARLIER PART: Udasi role in Hijacking of Sikhi

So, how did the Udasi go about undermining Sikhi? Karminder suggested that the Udasi groups did not tinker with the Guru Granth Shaib, but instead went about to inject false notions of Sikhi.

“They instead resorted to creating concocted tales relating to the lives of our Gurus and about corrupt Sikhi practices. This was, essentially, a cunning and devious attempt to recreate and rewrite Sikhi from the periphery while the leaving the core – namely, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji – intact,” he argued.

Do a quick search on the Internet and you will came across numerous postings where Sikh history is presented with all sorts of distortions. Here are two examples picked up from Twitter feeds. The first (see painting on left) attempts to claims how Guru Nanak had approved his son Sri Chand adopting the Udasi ways, when the Guru had actually disowned his son for doing so.

The tweet claims: “Here is another painting of Guru Nanak with his son Sri Chand. This painting is from Dera Baba Nanak Gurudwara which was setup by the descendants of the Guru.”

In the second tweet, it claims: “According to every Sikh Chronicle, the Sikh Gurus enrolled their sons under Sri Chand’s entourage. Sri Chand was a very respected figure in early Sikhism and no amount of whitewashing can change this fact.” Another obvious distortion, thanks to the Udasi and Nirmal groups.

A Sikh was spotted appearing as a brand ambassador for the Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna over the weekend.

It was Bally Singh, a Dubai-based entrepreneur who has been developing and staging large-scale entertainment events and experiential marketing campaigns around the world for the past 25 years.

“It was an honour to be a brand ambassador for Ermenegildo Zegna’s event yesterday, not just as me, Bally Singh, but as a Sikh for them to use me shows the world how diverse and unique the @zegnaofficial brand is.Thank you to all the guests that attended,” he said in an entry at his LinkedIn page.

Originally founded as a fabric maker in 1910 by Ermenegildo Zegna in Trivero, Italy, the company is listing its shares via a $3.2 billion deal with a blank-check company.

The deal allows the well-known luxury menswear brand under the third and fourth generations of the Zegna family to tap investor cash while keeping the founding family in control.

On his part, Bally is the founder of Rich List Group and Hoko Agency. Billy has started, grown and sold several businesses and also held senior management positions at companies including Zero Mobile, Tiger Telematics and Rockstar Marketing, according to his LinkedIn profile.
