Footsy all set to transform grassroots-level football scene

Baru Walia
By Sainul Abudheen K | SPORTS |

An avid footballer, Baru Walia used to play for his college, university and a few other social teams in Singapore and Australia in the past.

Now 34 years old, this staunch Manchester United fan always nursed an ambition to turn his passion into a business.

More than a year ago, he realised it was time to use his skills acquired from running his family business with his father to realise the dream.

“Asia’s grassroots-level football has not kept pace with technology despite a spurt in the cropping up of football courts/pitches/turfs in the region in the recent past,” he complains.

“The experience is still as same as ten years ago: bookings are still done via phone and payments via cash. Plus, the burden to organise the game always falls on the team captain or manager, and communication was basic among teams and players,” he says.

“One day, I asked myself what I could do to change this. And Footsy is the culmination of these thoughts. A super app, Footsy aims to transform the football scene in the region and the way players and fans interact with the various elements within football,” he adds.

The startup, which has been in the works since 2018, was founded by the father-son duo of Baru and Jatin Walia.

#GurmatPick | Introduction to a Gurmat Framework

0
By Asia Samachar Team | #GurmatPick |

The path of Gurmat takes into account Gurbani (message), Tawarikh (history) and Rahit (lifestyle). At least that is how it is seen from the perspective of Gurmat Framework developed by the US-based Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI).

Sikhri researcher Jasleen Kaur and Sikh Heritage Manitoba (SHM) co-founder Vineet Kaur walk listeners through the framework in a presentation entitled ‘The Gurmat Framework – Virtual Leadership Summit: A Sidak Event’. Click here.

It is about understanding and applying an approach to answering life’s questions through a Sikhi framework. It is also meant to explore ways to foster fruitful community dialogue around Panthic issues in our current global context, outside of existing echo chambers.

The second part of the presentation (about 40m onwards), they discuss how the framework applies to the question of #abortion.

Singapore to allow 1 gurdwara to double service to 100 people

Singapore has selected 12 places of worship, including a gurdwara, to conduct congregational and other worship services for up to 100 people, up from the earlier limit of 50 due to the novel coronavirus situation, effective Friday (7 Aug).

Central Sikh Temple (CST) will have the honours amongst the local gurdwaras under the pilot project overseen by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). It is required to put in place necessary precautions to safeguard public health.

The other places of worship are Masjid Assyafaah, Masjid Mujahidin, Masjid Al-Istighfar, Masjid Al-Iman, St Andrew’s Cathedral, Jurong Christian Church, Amazing Grace Presbyterian Church and Sengkang Methodist Church.

The pilot will include the implementation of two zones of up to 50 persons each for congregational and other worship services in nine of the 12 ROs1, MYCC said in a statement released on 3 Aug.

MCCY said it has consulted religious leaders, who are also members of the National Steering Committee (NSC) on Racial and Religious Harmony, to identify the religious organisations (ROs) for the pilot.

“The pilot sites reflect the diversity of religious practices and worship settings in Singapore. The participating ROs must have first safely conducted congregational and other worship services for up to 50 persons under the guidelines for Phase Two,” it said.

For churches, mosques and gurdwaras, they are required to establish two zones, each accommodating up to 50 worshippers, for the worship service.

In worship settings where religious services are structured /seated, these zones will help to minimise interactions between worshippers. Each zone has to be separated by a physical partition or barrier.

Worshippers must maintain a safe distance from one another at all times. To avoid interaction between worshippers across zones, there should also be separate entrances and exits or staggered entry and exit timings for each zone, according to the statement.

With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Singapore gurdwaras had cancelled all congregational prayers and gatherings, effective 27 March, as instructed by the authorities.

2,356 Hindu temples to receive govt aid – Report

By Asia Samachar Team | MALAYSIA |

A total of 2,356 Hindu temples in the country will receive RM5 million in special assistance from the Federal Government, Makkal Osai reported.

The government allocated the special fund to assist the temples which faced financial difficulties due to the movement control order, said Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) president RS Mohan Shan. The Star newspaper today (4 Aug) picked up the story.

Most Hindu temples cover their operating costs with donations by devotees, but there has been a shortfall as the temples were closed for nearly three months.

The MHS on its own had spent about RM3 million on religious activities, RM2.9 million of which came from donations, the report added, quoting Mohan Shan.

By Asia Samachar Team | SINGAPORE |

Judicial Commissioner Dedar Singh Gill was today (3 Aug) officially sworn in as a High Court judge before Singapore President Halimah Yacob at the Istana. He took on the role effective 1 Aug.

Dedar’s swearing in ceremony was attended by his wife, son and daughter, as well as Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon.

“I am confident that he will discharge his duties fairly and with integrity,” Halimah said in a Facebook entry.

The 61-year old judge first joined the Supreme Court bench upon his appointment as a judicial commissioner of the Supreme Court in August 2018 The Supreme Court comprises the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

The Prime Minister’s Office had first announced his appointment on 6 April, more than two months before the dissolution of Parliament on 23 June to pave the way for the July 10 general elections.

Asia Samachar had reported on the appointment here.

Prior to joining the judiciary, Dedar was the managing director for intellectual property (IP) at law firm Drew & Napier LLC.

At the Supreme Court, Justice Menon had tasked him to manage the IP list of the High Court, and worked on reviewing the intellectual property dispute resolution system in Singapore. Aside from IP cases, he has experience with cases related to contract, tort and negligence matters.

This is the second major judicial appointment in the region this year. On 10 July, Malaysia elevated Court of Appeal judge Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal to the Federal Court, the nation’s highest court.

Sikh families living in high rise buildings are faced with the challenge of bathing the body of their loved ones who have passed away.

And the situation has become more acute with some general hospitals no longer providing space to families to do so.

A gurdwara in Kuala Lumpur has come to the rescue of the Sikh community with the opening of a multipurpose hall that also allows families to attend to the dead.

On Saturday (1 Aug), Gurdwara Sahib Sentul (GSS) unveiled the facility costing RM150,000.

GSS committee president Rajpal Singh said many Sikh families live in high rise condominiums in the surrouding area, and they include the elderly.

“For the last two years, we have had many Sikh Sangat (congregation) who have requested to bath the deceased body at the gurdwara as they do not have the facilities in their home to do so.

“Since hospitals nowadays don’t provide bathing services for non-Muslims. Hence, a place to bath the body of a deceased Sikh has become an essential need,” he told Asia Samachar.

Aside from bathing the dead, the families will also be allowed to familiy, relatives and friends to pay their last respects to the departed.

Rajpal said the metal deck marquee tent will also allow large scale cooking to cater for bigger functions.

In the past year, he said the gurdwara had successfully conducted two major functions.

“We plan to continue being able to hold a large crowd for functions as this gurdwara is located in the heart of town,” he said.

Winner Dynasty Group chairman Liow Soon Hee had paid for the entire construction cost for the multipurpose hall.

Police spot check at Selangor gurdwara for masks, other Covid-19 SOP

Police spot check at a Selangor gurdwara for masks, other Covid-19 SOP – Photo: Picked up from social media sharing
By Asia Samachar Team | MALAYSIA |

Police conducted a spot check at a Selangor gurdwara yesterday (2 Aug) to ensure attendees were wearing masks and following other requirements now under force in the nation’s battle against the novel coronvirus pandemic.

No fines were issued. Instead the police had advised those present at the gurdwara to observe the Covid-19 measures.

“They had checked the names of the list of attendees with those present in the Darbar Sahib and issued reminder to comply with the SOP including wearing of masks,” Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) president Jagir Singh said in a statement shared via the social media.

Effective 1 Aug, Malaysia had made it mandatory to wear a face mask when using public transportation and in “crowded” public spaces. Those who flout the order could risk being fined RM1,000 (US$235).

“Thus the Gurdwara Committees are reminded to have the SOP in place including the new ruling effective from 1/08/2020 requiring wearing of masks,” he said.

Gurdwaras in Malaysia are now open for prayers and visitation. On March 18, Malaysia rolled out a movement control order (MCO) that required all places of religious worship, including gurdwaras, to cease all prayer gatherings.

On June 10, Malaysia allowed selected places of worship to operate under strict conditions. The permission has since been extended to all gurdwaras.

In his note, Jagir said all gurdwaras should ensure that the SOP was in place and observed as non-compliance may result in a fine or summon.

He listed out the SOP in force:

  • Physical distancing of at least 1 metre to be enforced, with signboards to be put up outside the Darbar Sahib (prayer hall) and at the Langgar hall. Wherever possible to put markings on the floor in suitable places.
  • To setup a counter table where record book is kept for Sanggat (congregation) members to write their names and contact numbers. A thermometer must also be available to take temperature of Sanggat members and all those attending the gurdwara programme.
  • Those who are above 70 years old may attend provided do not have serious health problems. Some SOP say senior citizens without stipulating the age.
  • The sanitizer should be made available at the point of entry or at the registration counter.
  • Those serving degh and all other sewadars doing sewa must wash thoroughly their hands with soap and water. During this Covid 19 period degh may also be served using a spoon.
  • Those preparing or serving Laggar must wear masks all the time. Langgar to be served to Sanggat while seated. No serving of buffet style.
  • The prepared Langgar must be put in clean and sterilised utensils. To observe absolute cleanliness all the time.
  • Those who have symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat should not attend but seek medical treatment.

“The Places of worship enjoy the right under the Constitution to ‘manage its own religious affairs. But by Article 11(5) this right is subject to general law relating to ‘ public order, public health or morality’. The SOP are issued under’ public order, public health ‘exception to religious right to manage our own affairs,” he added.
