Sikh campaign ad named finalist for top 2018 US public relations award

STATEMENT | NATIONAL SIKH CAMPAIGN
WE ARE SIKHS: A clip from the National Sikh Campaign
  • Sikh Ad campaign “We are Sikhs” is nominated for an award in the public relations industry’s premium awards.
  • National Sikh Campaign (NSC) and FP1 Strategies have been shortlisted for a 2018 PRWeek U.S. Award, what is considered as the Oscars for the PR Industry.

Washington, D.C –Sikh ads are among the five finalists for the “Best for a Cause” award, which recognizes the premier marketing communications cause showing a tangible, worthwhile benefit to a specific community.

Other competitors in this category include major corporate sponsored ads focused on significant issues facing the American society. These include Cigna’s initiative to fight the U.S. opioid epidemic, Facebook’s backed DACA immigration reform, Planet Fitness’s initiative designed to combat the judgement and bullying faced by youth, and NBA superstar Steph Curry and one of his loyal endorsers, Brita’s (the water filter company) campaign deemed #FilteredLife with a goal of ending bullying and hate in general.

National Sikh Campaign and FP1 Strategies, President Bush’s marketing team, are nominated for the Sikh ad campaign titled Telling the Story of Sikh Americans: Reshaping Perceptions Through Education and Awareness. NSC had engaged FP1 for the marketing of the national effort by the Sikhs to inform Americans about Sikhism and the Sikh identity.

“Without a doubt, 2017 singlehandedly had the most press coverage and news shared about Sikh Americans during our time here in the United States,” said Dr. Rajwant Singh, Co-Founder and Senior Advisor of NSC. “It’s an incredible feeling to know that our work has been selected among so many great corporate and nonprofit causes as a finalist for this award.”

He added, “Sikhs still have a long way to go to change the perceptions all across the nation but the awareness campaign in 2017 did make a difference. We must continue on this path and NSC has plans for 2018 as well.”

FP1 Strategies, the D.C-based public affairs firm, had led the execution of the We Are Sikhs campaign nationally as well as locally in markets such as Fresno and Visalia, CA. It highlighted NSC’s comprehensive strategy employing TV and digital advertising, press coverage, social media, and an state of the art website, leading to significant increases in the broader public’s knowledge and understanding of Sikhism.

“Our measurable success educating Americans across the country on Sikh values, such as equality, tolerance, and service, demonstrates how similar the tenets of the Sikh faith are to the founding principles the United States was built upon,” said Richard Cullen, Executive Vice President of FP1 Strategies. “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for a 2018 PRWeek Award in a category filled with other excellent campaigns that have also made tremendous social impact.”

The winner will be announced at the PRWeek Awards Ceremony on Thursday (15 March 2018) in New York, NY.

Sikh student told to leave UK bar due to turban

2
Amrik Singh said he was told he wasn’t allowed to wear his turban in Rush Late Bar, in Mansfield.

A Sikh student has said he is “heartbroken” after being asked to leave a bar in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, because he was wearing a turban.

Amrik Singh said he was told on Friday night that he was not allowed to stay in Rush Late Bar because he refused to remove his religious headware, reports Huffington Post UK.

After the student, who recorded his conversation with staff, said that his turban is a religious requirement, he was told: “I didn’t think you were allowed to come in a pub and drink anyway.”

The bar released a statement on Saturday saying the door supervisor involved had been suspended and a thorough investigation launched, the same report added.

Amrik said that he was initially allowed into the venue, but he was removed after about 30 minutes.

“A bouncer approached me saying that I needed to remove my turban,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

“I explained that a turban isn’t just headgear, but part of my religion and that it protected my hair – and that I was allowed to wear a turban in public. The bouncer ignored this and said I needed to take it off. I refused and was subsequently dragged away from my friends.”

The report further said that Amrik felt “victimised” and so he decided to record the conversation.

“The fact that I was being removed because of my religious views really upset me. My ancestors have fought for the British army previously. Furthermore, me and my parents were born in Britain and all uphold British values.

“I was eventually let back into the venue but was told that I would not be allowed back in in the future because of my headwear.

“This experience ruined my night. It broke my heart. I’m very fortunate that I’m well spoken and I am able to stand up for myself. What if it was someone who wasn’t confident was told to leave? I am disgusted.”

India mauls Malaysia 5-1 after host played hot and cold

By Jugjet SinghJugjet’s World of Field Hockey

MALAYSIA played hot and cold to allow India to beat them 5-1 in the Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh Wednesday (March 7). With the defeat, they must beat England on Friday and hope Australia beat Argentina to play in the final of the 27th Edition.

India took a lead off Shilanand Lakra in the 10th minute, when he picked a cross from Gurjant Singh in front of Hafizuddin Othman and cooly lifts the ball over the goalkeeper and into goal.

Faizal Shaari scores the equaliser in the 33rd minute, but goals from Gurjant Singh (42nd, 57th) and Ramandeep Singh (48th, 55th) destroys Malaysia.

Three teams will be battling for one final slot in the 27th Edition of the Azlan Shah Cup Friday.

Australia checked in early on 12 points while Argentina, Malaysia and England will be playing for the other final slot Friday.

For Malaysian coach Stephen van Huizen and his men, they must first hope world No 1 Australia beats world No 2 Argentina in the first match of the day. And then Malaysia needs to beat England, to play in the final.

“We know the situation well, and were really hoping to claim the final ticket by beating India but it did not happen.

“Now, it’s out of our hands as Australia needs to beat Argentina to keep our hopes alive. Nevertheless, we will play all out for a win against England for the highest possible finish in the tournament,” said van Huizen.

Malaysia played their worse match against India and lost 5-1, and on Friday they will be hoping to play like they did in the 2-1 win against Argentina.

“All the players have knocks and bruises but only Marhan (Jalil) might not be available for Friday as he received a nasty knock against India.

“We know there is a good chance to beat England, and we will not throw it away regardless the outcome of the first match (Argentina v Australia).”
