Why is it important for a woman to be empowered? The need for empowerment is not to campaign for woman’s justice but rather to prompt a sense of self-worth and gratification for all women. Women have made great advancements which should not be overlooked or overshadowed by issues of gender or even emotional sentiments. The empowerment of a woman does not in any way demean the importance and need of a man. Every man has his life impacted by some woman or another. A woman is a mother, wife, daughter, sister and even a friend.
Empowering a woman is not only important but equally necessary and crucial. One way of creating such empowerment is by specifically creating awareness about women in selected areas such as the law, social, economics etc. Creating awareness on these issues will create empowerment and targeted outcomes.
Hence, giving the women legal awareness in turn creates empowerment. Such vital information and understanding will allow every woman to make safe and better choices for themselves and their families. Under Article 8(1) of the Malaysian Federal Constitution, all persons are equal before the law and entitled to the equal protection of the law. Every person in the society has the right to information as to their legal rights. As such, it is important to impart practical legal awareness to women regarding their rights. With the proper knowledge, a woman cannot be subjected to any form of double standards, discrimination and suffering. Moreover, to any lay person, law may be complex and intricate. Some basic awareness may create a big difference to a woman who may indeed be seeking justice for herself or her family.
Some common legal issues faced by women usually relate to marriage, separation, divorce, child custody, property rights and domestic violence. Women who are career-minded and employed too have concerns on gender discrimination and sexual harassment at the workplace. Rape, sexual assault, battery, abuse, sexual harassment are also some common threats to women.
Therefore, it is necessary to create the consciousness about these issues and educate members of society, be it a man or woman, regarding women’s legal issues. No one can improve the status of women unless the women themselves decide to be responsive and mindful of their own honour and pride.
According to Sikh ideology, all men and women possess equal status. However, merely acknowledging this Sikh ideology, will not reflect the true practices and teachings of God. Every person needs to look beyond and practice every basic tenet of the Sikh faith and teaching to create harmony between men and women. A woman should never be tied with limitation but rather be inspired with courage and strength.

Dalip Singh Saund, a former judge who became the first Asian American to be elected to the US Congress, had visited Singapore soon after creating history by winning a seat in the US legislature in 1957.
“The Singapore Indian Association will hold a cocktail party in honour of the visiting American Congressman, Mr. Dalip Singh Saund, at its club house in Balestier Road at 7.15 p.m. tomorrow. Before the party, Mr. Dalip Singh will speak at a public meeting at the Club,” reported The Straits Times (11 November 1957).
Saund, who was born In Amritsar in 1899, had studied at University of Punjab. In 1920, he came to the US to attend the University of California and graduated in 1922 receiving M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.
After obtaining a PhD in Mathematics, he had to settle as a farmer as he could not get a teaching job as he was not a US citizen. That came in 1949.
Back then, the Sikhs in the US were referred to as Hindus. In an interview on a television programme, Saund also refers to himself as Hindu.
“Judge Saund, you are the only Hindu and the only Asian ever to have sat in the Congress of the United States,” says the commentator. See here.
“Everyone thought I had no chance. It was not possible for a Hindu to be elected judge,” Dalip replies.
Until today, Dalip remains the only Sikh to have been elected to the US Congress. He was reelected twice, in 1958 and 1960. While campaigning for a fourth term in 1962, he suffered a debilitating stroke and became incapacitated.
(For a more complete history of Congressman Dalip, see here).

Dr. Bhagwan Singh (1920-1987)
[ASIA SAMACHAR is an online newspaper for Sikhs in Southeast Asia and surrounding countries. We have a Facebook page, do give it a LIKE! Visit our website: www.asiasamachar.com]
He passed away three decades ago, but the late Dr Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh is still making a difference to the scientific world in Malaysia.
A prominent medical research scientist, the 18th Director of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), between 1972 and 1974, had made many invaluable contributions to the field of medical and scientific research and to the development of diagnostic laboratories in Malaysia.
In 1982, the unmarried pathologist bequeathed his house in Petaling Jaya and the rest of his estate to form an endowment fund to promote the education of the poor and needy, irrespective of race, colour and religion.
“He was a good boss and a good friend. He was a stickler for governance and details,” Dr M Jegathesan, the famed Malaysian athlete who went on to become the 21st director of IMR between 1988-1993, tells Asia Samachar. “He was very straight forward, no nonsense.”
Dr Jegathesan, who carries the title Tan Sri, also added: “He was close to his family, He had looked after his nephews.”
In 1987, Dr Ranjeet died of a heart attack at a dinner at Kelab Aman, Kuala Lumpur, held in his honour. He was 67.
But his memory lives on in the Dr Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh Medical Research Endowment Fund which annually provides financial assistance to young and aspiring scientists.
It is probably his way of paying back for the help that he had received when studying in India where he had graduated with the MBBS from the Medical College at Amritsar, Punjab in 1948.
“As a poor student from Malaya attending medical college in India, Bhagwan Singh faced considerable financial difficulties and was unable to pay the fees for his final examinations. An anonymous donor went to his aid and paid those fees. This act of kindness remained a constant source of inspiration for the rest of his life for him to help others. He donated generously to students in various Universities and Institutions through goodwill loans, endowment funds, scholarships and prizes,” wrote Dr Lim Teong Wah, the late virologist and the 20th director of IMR.
“Dr. Bhagwan Singh was unmarried and lived a simple life, following professional and wide-ranging intellectual pursuits,” he added in the obituary which appeared in the Malaysian Journal of Pathology, the official journal of the College of Pathologists, Academy of Medicine Malaysia. (See full obituary below).
The Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is now the custodian of the fund with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) running research grant and a research workshop grant.
The research grant is to enable a young Malaysian scientist to undertake medical/ biomedical research while the research workshop grant is a biennial programme to allow one Malaysian scientist/ institution to conduct a workshop to introduce new research techniques or enhance research technologies in medical or biomedical fields.
Dr Ranjeet joined IMR in 1951 and became a senior bacteriology officer in 1960 before becoming deputy director in 1971, according to information at the IMR website.
Among his contributions were establishing the Bacteriology Department as a WHO reference centre for Salmonellosis.
OBITUARY
DR. RANJEET BHAGWAN SINCH
MBBS, PhD, DTM, FRCPath.
The Society records, with regret, the sudden death on 13 June 1987, of Dr. Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh.
Dr. Bhagwan Singh was born in 1920 and graduated with the MBBS from the Medical College at Amritsar, Punjab in 1948. After completing his basic medical training, he went on to obtain a Doctorate in Bacteriology from the Edinburgh University. He also studied and gained working experience in India, Britain, the Philippines and Thailand. He was a Founder Member of the Malaysian Society of Pathologists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom.
He joined the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur in 1951 and became its Director in 1971, retiring from that post in 1975.
As a poor student from Malaya attending medical college in India, Bhagwan Singh faced considerable financial difficulties and was unable to pay the fees for his final examinations. An anonymous donor went to his aid and paid those fees. This act of kindness remained a constant source of inspiration for the rest of his life for him to help others. He donated generously to students in various Universities and Institutions through goodwill loans, endowment funds, scholarships and prizes.
Over the years, he gave considerable sums of money to the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom to set up an Endowment Fund. The College has decided that this fund, which now stands at ~10,000 be permitted to accumulate until it is sufficient to support, annually, a visit to the United Kingdom by a young pathologist from Malaysia.
In 1982, he bequeathed his house in Petaling Jaya and the rest of his estate to the Dr. Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh Medical Research
Endowment Fund to be run by the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry.
Dr. Bhagwan Singh was unmarried and lived a simple life, following professional and wide-ranging intellectual pursuits. He died from a heart attack at a dinner held in his honour in Kelab Aman, Kuala Lumpur on 13 June 1987.

EXCITEMENT: Rearing for action at Akaal Premier League 2017 – PHOTO / SUPPLIED
By Jagdesh Singh
Last Sunday, 23 July 2017, bore witness to some thumping non-stop action from Matchday 2 of the Akaal Premier League (APL) 2017, a Malaysian-made futsal league held in Kuala Lumpur for Sikh boys and girls.
The under-13 Beruntung Hill Twin Lions kicked off the early morning festivities thrashing Titiwangsa Panthers 5-1. The Lions emerged second in the league, staking an early claim to the championship.
The under-13 Iron River Kings also had their convincing victory over the Kampung Pandan Lions, with a healthy score line of 3-0.
High on their laurels with the big victory earlier on, the under-13 Twin Lions just couldn’t capitalize on their momentum and drew 0-0 with the Pulapol Eagles.
The under-13 Rawang Akaal Warriors then beat the Kampung Pandan Lions 2-0, sobering the Lions after their earlier victory as well.
This was followed by under-13 Titiwangsa Panthers to salvage some pride after their huge loss earlier on to get their first 3 points for the day with a nice 2-0 win over the Selayang Sardars.
With what seemed like an upset for the day, the under-13 Eagles got their 3 points over the Akaal Warriors with a 3-1 win.
And lastly, the final game for the under 13s for the day saw a hard battled 1-1 draw between both the Iron River Kings and the Selayang Sardars.
The final table for the under-13 teams saw the Twin Lions sitting on top with 8 points, the same number of points shared with the River Kings, with the Twin Lions edging over the River Kings over a 2 goal difference.
Number 10 for the Twin Lions, Pritvir Singh, is now top scorer with 7 goals, 4 more goals then the next top goal scorer, Manraaj Singh of the River Kings.
The action was even more ferocious with the under-16, starting off with a very comfortable 3-0 win for the Selayang Sardars over the Kampung Pandan Lions.
Traveling from a far, the Seremban Lions just couldn’t overcome the Iron River Kings, losing 2-3.
Next saw a hard fought battle between old rivals Pulapol Eagles and the Rawang Akaal Warriors, with the Eagles beating the Warriors with a slim margin of 3-2.
Both the Klang Rangers and the Bukit Beruntung Twin Lions had to share the spoils and be contented with 1 point each, drawing 2-2.
After their comfortable victory earlier on, the Selayang Sardars had to slog for a 1-0 win over the Kampung Pandan Lions.
And then we saw goals galore. The Iron Kings demolished the Seremban Lions with almost a double figure, winning 9-1!
LAST MAN: Rearing for action at Akaal Premier League 2017 – PHOTO / SUPPLIED
The goals didn’t stop there. There were 8 scored in the next game between the Pulapol Eagles and the Rawang Akaal Warriors. But, there was no victor from a thrilling draw.
And in the last game for the under-16s, the Klang Rangers made their statement of intent, unraveling the Beruntung Hill Twin Lions with a 7-2 win.
This all put the Selayang Sardars with their 2 wins for the day on top of the league with 12 points. The Pulapol Eagles aren’t very far away with 10 points.
Harjeevan Singh, the Number 10 for the Klang Rangers has netted 8 goals so far, together with Rajvinderjit Singh of the Iron River Kings with also 8 goals. Both at the top scorers for the under-16.
Overall, it was an action packed day and the race is certainly on.
The tournament is organised by the Akaal Sports Academy (ASA), a sports non-government organisation headquartered at the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan in Kuala Lumpur. Asia Samachar is the tourney’s media partner.
