A Canadian armed forces unit made history in what is believed to be the first-ever regimental Remembrance Day service to take place at a Sikh place of worship in that country.

More than 200 members of the 7th Toronto Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery made their way to the Gursikh Sabha Canada in Scarborough on Sunday (6 Nov 2016).

Canada holds the distinction of being the only nation in the world with a Sikh as a defence minister in Harjit Singh Sajjan.

“Ranking members of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery (RCA) were received by a group of men, women and youth representing the community who welcomed them to the Gurdwara prior to the commencement of the service.

“A wonderful service was held in which religious Shabads (hymns) that speak to Sikh ethos of service and remembrance were sung,” according to Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada.

The group had co-organised an exhibit called “War and Faith” at the gurdwara to shed light on the history of Sikh soldiers who fought in the first and second world wars. The exhibit also explores the role of religious faith during military service.

The regiments participants told CBC News that the regiment wants to fight stereotypes, and spread the message that the Canadian military is an inclusive institution.

“It’s not what people may think of as just white males,” the news report quoted Master Bombardier Jasmin Buccella.

“We have all diversities, females, different cultures and everyone has the opportunity to participate.”

In Malaysia, the Remembrance Day Service 2016, organised by the British High Commission, will be held at Tugu Negara in Kuala Lumpur at 8am on 13 Nov. It is titled ’75 Year Commemorative Service, Malayan Campaign, 1941-2016′.
