India edged Pakistan 4-3 in a seven-goal FIH Pro League thriller in London on Tuesday (June 23).
Pakistan struck first through Ahmad Nadeem in the eighth minute, finishing from close range after a penalty-corner routine. India responded strongly, but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Ali Raza, who kept out several penalty-corner attempts, including from captain Harmanpreet Singh.
The equaliser came in the second quarter when Abhishek reacted sharply inside the circle to make it 1-1. India went ahead soon after as Nilakanta Sharma pounced on a rebound and drove the ball past Raza for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Sukhjeet Singh extended India’s advantage in the 40th minute with a diving finish, before Rajinder Singh converted a clever penalty-corner move in the final quarter to put India 4-1 up.
Pakistan, however, refused to fade. Captain Abu Mahmood reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, and Moin Shakeel struck from a penalty-corner rebound with just seconds remaining.
India held on to secure a hard-fought win, with Manpreet Singh named Player of the Match.
Pakistan’s next FIH Pro League match is against England today (June 24) while India will take on host next England on June 25.
