Aam Aadmi train guns on political reject Simranjit Singh Mann

Simranjit Singh Mann

By Prabhjot Singh | Opinion |

Aam Aadmi Party (AAM) training all their guns, big and small, on Simranjit Singh Mann over the Bhagat Singh issue is a classic political diversionary trick, to take away the political heat over the Raghav Chadha issue.

Simranjit Mann is a political reject of Punjab who has got a political dead cat bounce recently due to disillusion with Congress/Akalis and anger at AAP as well as death of the two Sidhus. Left to his own devises,Mann Sahib was going only one way — i.e. downhill.

Mann’s antics and utterances are often an embarrassment even to his own core supporters. His persistent incapability to lead the “panth”, frittering away multiple opportunities, authoritarianism and selling of a Khalistan pipe dream makes him an electoral misfit despite his recent rebranding as “Budha Sher”. He is more Senile than Sher. A rotary phone in an age of Iphones.

His continued presence at the Panthic centerstage long after his sell off date speaks more about the inability of the Panth to reinvent, refresh or reimagine itself rather than any merits on Mann’s part.

That AAP has picked up such a “soft target” is not only to divert attention from its own “Raghav” problem but also to artificially build up Simranjit Mann. Building up Mann can only polarise Punjab which AAP hopes will lead to the collapse of the centre and further fracture away the political space of Punjab to its advantage.

Chinese scientists propose ‘religion-free’ calendar for the space age – Report

By SCMP | China |

Chinese space scientists have proposed a universal standard for keeping time across the solar system that, unlike existing systems, does not put the Earth – or religion – at its centre.

A new standard has become necessary as humans have ventured into space, according to their paper published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation last month.

Although timekeeping is often taken for granted on Earth, it is a major challenge in outer space. It is impossible to determine the exact time on Mars by syncing it with the time on Earth because it takes 3 to 22 minutes for a radio signal to travel from Earth to Mars, and the relative position and velocity of the two planets are constantly changing, according to the paper.

To develop a timekeeping mechanism that works beyond Earth, the authors proposed using the solar system’s common centre of mass, or its “barycentre”, as the origin of coordinates to determine locations in space.

The beginning of time could then be defined as the moment a chosen signal from a millisecond pulsar – a highly magnetic neutron star that pulses hundreds of times per second – reached the barycentre, they said.

This is dramatically different from how people tell time now, with our home planet at the centre of the coordinate system and the Greenwich meridian as the reference point. Meanwhile, year 0 in the widely used Gregorian calendar is determined by the purported birth year of Jesus Christ.

“The starting point of time used by the Gregorian calendar that is generally used now is related to religion,” said the researchers, who hold senior positions in the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the China Academy of Space Technology, and the National Astronomical Observatories in Beijing.

A major challenge in establishing the standard would be picking the specific pulsar and signal for a start time on the calendar, the researchers said.

People have thought about shifting away from Earth-centric timekeeping for a long time, according to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in the US.

“In fact, astronomers already use such a system when studying signals from outside the solar system with high time precision, or when calculating the positions of the planets,” McDowell said.
China is a rising space superpower, building its own space station in low Earth orbit and racing to set up bases on the moon and send humans to Mars.

32 Alberta law professors sign letter calling for government to make oath to Queen optional – Report

By CBC News | Canada |

A group of Alberta law professors have sent an open letter to the Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro urging for a legislative amendment to the mandatory Queen’s Oath students must make when called to the bar.

After Edmonton articling student Prabjot Singh Wirring decided to sue the province on the basis that swearing the specific oath would contradict his religious beliefs, law professors from Calgary and Edmonton decided to push for a change.

Anna Lund, an associate professor at the University of Alberta, is one of the signatories on the letter and said the goal is to make the oath optional.

“I was called to the bar in 2008 and I gave the oath and I didn’t have a second thought about it,” said Lund. “But other people are coming from other backgrounds that makes the oath difficult for them. I think that it’s really important to us, in the legal profession, to listen to those voices, and to change.

“The argument that we’ve always done it this way and it worked for me, therefore, we’re always going to continue doing it this way, just doesn’t it doesn’t carry a lot of weight.”

In Alberta, provincial legislation requires lawyers swear an oath to “be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors.”

Wirring is a devout Amritdhari Sikh, and says he made an absolute oath and submitted himself to Akal Purakh, the divine being in the Sikh faith, and cannot make a similar allegiance to another entity or sovereign.

“I’m really deeply appreciative of the professors who took the initiative in coordinating writing the letter and signing on to give their public support. I think it’s reflective of the general sentiment within the legal community in Alberta,” Wirring told CBC.

“For a while now the profession and the community at large is starting to recognize a lot of the systemic barriers that are excluding racialized groups, and Indigenous lawyers from joining the board. There have been some really good efforts to combat and rectify it. I think everybody’s recognizing that this is really low hanging fruit. I’m not asking for the world.”

Other jurisdictions such as Ontario and B.C. have made the oath optional.
