India stuns reigning champ Indonesia to win maiden Thomas Cup

By Asia Samachar | Thailand |

India made history winning the Thomas Cup for the first time when they outclassed reigning champions Indonesia 3-0 in Bangkok today (15 May).

India, competing in their debut final of the men’s team championship, becomes the sixth different nation to claim the Thomas Cup.

India sealed the title when world number 11 Kidambi Srikanth defeated higher-ranked Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21.

A devastated Indonesia, the tournament’s most successful team having previously won it 14 times, could not keep pace with the fire brought by the Indian team — who joyfully rushed the court following Srikanth’s win, AFP reports.

India were already 2-0 up, with Lakshya Sen beating Anthony Ginting in the first singles match and then Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeating Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sukamuljo in the doubles.

It fell to Christie, an Asian Games gold medallist now in his fourth Thomas Cup campaign, to save Indonesia’s flagging title hopes. But the eighth-ranked Christie couldn’t do it and seemed overcome with nerves at the onset of his do-or-die match against Srikanth. The 29-year-old Srikanth took full advantage, bearing down relentlessly on Christie in the second game, the report added.

When should entrepreneurs get out of office? This is what a Sikh CIO and investor has to say.

Manpreet Singh – Photo: Washington Business Journal

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

Here’s a piece of advice for entrepreneurs. Get out of the office when you and the team start feeling burned out and use it as an opportunity to have fun and form deeper relationships.

That is the biggest lesson picked up by a Sikh chief investment officer (CIO) over the years when dabbling in entrepreneurship and corporate work.

“No one ever does their best work while stressed out and there have been many times where a once seemingly impossible problem was solved immediately once we revisited it with a fresh mind,” Manpreet Singh, the CIO at Maryland-based private equity firm Singh Capital Partners, told Asia Samachar.

Manpreet, an entrepreneur, founder and investor, has been playing in the space of entrepreneurship since high school when he and his brother floated a social networking start-up called Desi Vibes.

When asked what is his advise to Sikh youth venturing into entrepreneurship today, he said: “Take any opportunity you can get to get your foot in the door. I got my first job by cold calling Eugene Profit and offered to work for his fund for free while in high school. I eventually became the first full time employee and helped grow the fund’s AUM from US$20 million to over US$2 billion before attending Wharton for grad school.”

Impressive, indeed.

Recently, Manpreet was awarded the Diversity in Business Awards by the Washington Business Journal. The award, now into its 15th year, sets out to honor outstanding business leaders of color in Greater Washington for their entrepreneurial drive, creativity and success.

At Singh Capital Partners, founded in 2018, Manpreet manages investments for more than a dozen families and has hundreds of limited partnerships with which it’s co-invested.

Over the past decade, the Silver Spring native has invested in companies like Uber, Spotify, Impossible Foods, Postmates and Robinhood. Singh Capital Partners manages investments for more than a dozen families and has hundreds of limited partnerships with which it’s co-invested, according to a report at the newspaper.

Manpreet was president and co-founder of TalkLocal, Inc. TalkLocal has raised US$4 million in venture funding and has delivered over 4 million calls nationwide, according to his profile at his LinkedIn page.

He is also the chief financial officer of Founder SPAC with CEO Osman Ahmed of KCK Group and executive chairman Hassan Ahmed, who sold his company, Affirmed Network, to Microsoft Corp. in 2020, according to the newspaper paper.

In December 2021, Founder SPAC, a special purpose acquisition company or so-called blank-check company, inked a deal to merge with Rubicon Technologies LLC, a smart waste and recycling software and tech company based in Lexington, Kentucky, to take the latter brand public on the New York Stock Exchange. The transaction, slated to close in the second quarter of this year, is expected to generate Us$432 million in gross proceeds.

His philanthropic activities include his roles as a director of the LaKan Foundation, a charter member of TiE-DC, and a member of Summit Series since 2009.

Manpreet received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business in Entrepreneurship, Finance, and Real Estate. He also holds a B.S. in Finance with a citation in Entrepreneurship from the University of Maryland, College Park.

In the interview with the Washington Business Journal, Manpreet was asked how he sets boundaries between work and the rest of your life.

He says: “I try to get everything I need to get done between the hours of 9 to 6 or 9 to 5. I realize I’m doing a lot less dinner meetings. A lot of that has gone away, post-having kids. When I ran my company, I was working seven days a week and in the office every day. That now obviously doesn’t happen. Weekends, I have a lot more time to play with the kids. And I’ve become very efficient with naptimes — during naptime, I get a lot done.”

A must read book on Sikhi in this new age. Keyword: Hijacking

0

By Asia Samachar |
Global |

If you are keen to understand Sikhs and their faith, then you are highly recommended to pick up The Hijacking of Sikhi. Its revised edition, now running into 450 pages, has just been released.

In the book, Sikh author and speaker Karminder Singh Dhillon makes a compelling case as to why the Sikh faith had been hijacked. (If you are keen to jump straight into why he chose the word hijacking for the title, then go here. There is a webinar link that you may want to check out).

The first edition was released in late-2020 along with four other books: Understanding Nitnem: Jup, Sodar, and Sohela (308 pages), Understanding Sidh Goshat (271 pages), Understanding Anand (162 pages) and Understanding Asa Di Vaar (289 pages).

The primary thesis of the book – that Sikhi as it is practiced today is not the Sikhi that was gifted by the Sikh Gurus but is a hijacked version – is developed with additional material and sources in part one – pertaining to the role of the Nirmlas.

The book also contains updated material in part four relating to efforts in freeing Sikhi from the hijackers. Sources and references have also been updated, allowing readers to do their own cross checking. The revised edition also comes with a complete index that facilitates easy search for issues.

You can now buy the revised edition as a standalone book. Click here for prices. The author has said that the book is made available at cost price with zero profit and zero royalty.

Asia Samachar had run a number of reviews on the book. Click here for one of them.

Singapore bans hit Kashmir film over portrayal of Muslims – Report

By Asia Samachar |
Singapore |

Singapore has banned a controversial Indian film over its “provocative and one-sided portrayal” of Muslims in Kashmir that officials fear could provoke religious and ethnic tensions in the city-state, reports AFP.

Released in March and one of India’s highest-grossing films this year, “The Kashmir Files” depicts in harrowing detail how several hundred thousand Hindus fled Muslim militants in Indian-administered Kashmir in 1989 and 1990.

The movie has been endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and seized on by Hindu hardliners to stir up hatred against the country’s Muslim minority. Critics say it tackles themes close to the political agenda of Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, which has often been accused of marginalising and vilifying Muslims, the report added.

The media regulator in Singapore refused to classify the film, meaning it cannot be screened. The decision was due to the movie’s “provocative and one-sided portrayal of Muslims and the depictions of Hindus being persecuted”, the news agency quoted unnamed officials as saying in a statement late Wednesday.

“These representations have the potential to cause enmity between different communities, and disrupt social cohesion and religious harmony in our multi-racial and multi-religious society.”

The city-state’s population of 5.5 million are mostly ethnic Chinese but it also has large communities of ethnic Malay Muslims and ethnic Indian Hindus.

The film’s director, Vivek Agnihotri, lashed out at the decision, tweeting that Singapore was the “most regressive censor in the world”.

“A film on Kashmiri Pandit Refugees. Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, we want to tell the story of this horrifying event to the world,” reads the introduction at the movie’s social media pages.

It revolves around a university student who learns about the death of his parents in the 1990s in Muslim-majority Kashmir, a disputed region split between India and Pakistan since 1947.

Three decades of insurgency in the region — with Pakistan’s backing, according to New Delhi — and a heavy-handed response by the Indian military have killed tens of thousands of people, mostly Muslims. Around 200,000 Kashmiri Hindus — known as Pandits — fled after the violence began in the late 1980s. Up to 219 may have been killed, according to official figures, the report added.

Battle hardened mothers feted at Subang gurdwara

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

At 90, Ajit Kaur was the eldest among the elderly ladies who turned up for the Mother’s Day celebration at Subang gurdwara.

She is now wheelchair bound, but her spirit is still strong.

“She’s always been a strong character. She doesn’t easily give into emotions,” her grandson Randhill Singh told Asia Samachar.

Ajit has been a widow for the last eight year since her husband Bachan Singh, a businessman hailing from Kangar, Perlis, passed away. The couple have nine children.

Ajit and the other elderly women at the centre of the celebration have seen much in their lives, and contributed immensely towards their families and community.

Among the other ladies who turned up (group photo, left to right) were Sarwjit Kaur, Dial Kaur, Sarjit Kaur, Tejinder Kaur, Mohinder Kaur and Daleep Kaur. They are battle hardened mothers, having taken on challenges thrown their way in life.

Sarwjit was born in 1941 at Bagan Serai, Perak. Her father, Chanan Simgh, was a railway station master.

“In my early teens, we had stayed in Singapore as my father was stationed there,” she said.

After he passed away, the family moved to Batu Gajah, another town in the Malaysian state of Perak, as most of their family members lived there.

Dial Kaur, born in 1935 in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, was the daughter of Mher Singh, a town board clerk who later moved to the land office. She lived in Ipoh after her marriage.

The programme was organised by the Istri Satsang Wing of Gurdwara Sahib Subang.

“We had to stop many activities due to the pandemic. We will now start back our activities,” said Jugindar Kaur who heads the women’s wing.

The activities include excursions for mothers, teaching giddha and cooking classes.

By Asia Samachar | United States |

President Joe Biden named Jasjit Singh as executive director of SelectUSA, a government-wide program housed within the International Trade Administration tasked with attracting foreign direct investment to the United States.

Jasjit, who had served as the executive director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) between 2009 and 2016, is believed to be the first Sikh to take up the position.

“In this role, I will lead the strategy and implementation of SelectUSA’s mission to create jobs, spur economic growth and promote American competitiveness….I am transitioning from nearly four years at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-India Business Council,” Jasjit said in an entry at his personal LinkedIn page.

SelectUSA is the U.S. government program led by the U.S. Department of Commerce that focuses on facilitating job-creating business investment into the US and raising awareness of the critical role that economic development plays in the U.S. economy. Since its inception, SelectUSA has facilitated more than US$105 billion in investment, creating and/or retaining over 138,000 U.S. jobs, according to information at its website.

Prior to his latest appointment, Jasjit had served as a senior director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce where he headed the manufacturing and supply chain logistics committees as well as states engagement and Capitol Hill outreach. He also had a stint as a senior policy advisor at the U.S. Department of Justice.

Rep. Judy Chu, chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), had supported Jasjit’s appointment, according to a SelectUSA statement.

“With his years of experience with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-India Business Council to working with Jasjit when he was Executive Director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), he is perfectly suited to lead SelectUSA in their mission to promote American competitiveness and bolster economic growth.” she said.
